______ Basilisk was born and raised as a noble warrior. He was fiercely loyal to his clan, ready to kill to protect everyone within the clan.
He had never expected love to interfere with his loyalty.
Basilisk had never intended to fall in love at all. Why have a family when you could do something productive with your life? Why die peacefully around your hatchlings when you could die heroically in battle?
But that was before he met Moonfire.
Basilisk never expected to fall in love with the rogue Skydancer. He never once thought of becoming her mate or raising her hatchlings.
But he did see her potential. He did think of a future where she could be a warrior for his clan. Moonfire had a fierce spirit, that was obvious. And her curiosity about clan life was intriguing.
______ Basilisk met with Moonfire every night, telling her stories of the clan and explaining the clan's laws and rankings to her. He never intended to fall in love with her- these meetings were a simple agreement between them so that Moonfire could learn about the clan.
But before long, Basilisk was overwhelmed by a strange emotion. He wanted to be with Moonfire constantly, and the thought of anyone hurting her was more than he could bear. For the first time in his life, he considered having a peaceful life, raising hatchlings with Moonfire.
But there was one problem with that plan- Moonfire could not have eggs.
She had tried, with Basilisk and before him. But at best, her hatchlings lived for a few hours. At worst, the eggs were cracked and never hatched at all. Basilisk was sure it was a series of unlucky coincidences, but Moonfire was convinced she was cursed.
______ Basilisk didn't hear from Moonfire for a few weeks after that. But finally, she met with him again, telling him some shocking news: she had found an abandoned egg and decided to raise it alone. She wanted him to help her.
Basilisk wanted to, more than anything. But he knew he couldn't. His clan had to come first. He promised Moonfire he would visit whenever possible, but that was the best he could offer. He would still try his best to be some kind of father-figure to this hatchling, but he knew he couldn't abandon his clan.

B I O G R A P H Y

______ Basilisk did visit Moonfire and the hatchling, now named Typhoon. Basilisk was somewhat honoured at Moonfire's choice of names- it was a name they had discussed before, in the hope that Moonfire would be able to bear a healthy hatchling. For the first year or two, Typhoon enjoyed Basilisk's company. While the young Pearlcatcher was still a hatchling, she was thoroughly amused by Basilisk, especially when he performed small magic spells to show her.
But as time went on, Typhoon grew to dislike and avoid Basilisk.
It wasn't his fault. At least, he didn't think so. When he felt Typhoon was old enough, he began training her in battle techniques. He didn't mean to hurt her, he just wanted her to be able to fend for herself. And, okay, so maybe he did have the occasional fantasy of Typhoon as a warrior of his clan. That shouldn't have been an issue. He thought Typhoon would make a great warrior.
______ But Typhoon showed no interest whatsoever in fighting. Basilisk was often annoyed by her peaceful, dreamer-like attitude to the world. Perhaps it was simply her innocence that frustrated him. Typhoon thought the world was just a happy, peaceful place where dragons either left each other alone or became friends with each other. Basilisk knew he needed to warn her somehow, warn her that the world was a much darker place than she thought.
He began telling her stories of the Howling Storm, a vicious band of rogue dragons inhabiting the nearby territories. Basilisk had never intended to terrify Typhoon. He merely wanted her to realize the world wasn't the perfect happy place she thought it was, and sooner or later she'd have to learn to protect herself.
______ But Basilisk's plan backfired. Typhoon wasn't any more eager to learn battle moves. If anything, she avoided him even more than usual. Basilisk saw less and less of Typhoon every time he visited.
Over time, Basilisk grew colder and more distant. He only visited Moonfire every week or two, and if he spoke, it was usually a growling remark.
But no matter what Typhoon thought of him, no matter what she thought he might do, Basilisk wouldn't harm his adopted daughter. He wasn't the kind of dragon who attacked innocent dragons.
At least, that's what he would keep telling himself, over and over, as many times as he had to, until he was sure it was true.
