Wip Arpelia turned the cleaver over in her claws. This thing was massive, even to her, but not as heavy as she expected. Surely the blade must have been some imperial’s butcher knife or guardian’s treasured weapon. She studied the harsh metal while absentmindedly scratching at the flecks of rust and dried viscera. She regarded the tiny bogsneak who brought the weapon to her. The way he had drug it along behind him was comical to her, but feeling the cold weight in her hand made her wonder. “How... no, where did you get this Ares?” “Adventurers brought it back a while ago. It’s difficult for me to carry around, but you should have seen the sky dancer, wild claw, and nocturne trying to drag this monster back.” He bellowed out a hardy laughter much lower than she expected him to have. “Ha, oh it was quite the sight.” “Yeah but who used it? Surely none of them right” She thought aloud. “No, no, no,” Ares dismissed with a wave of his wing. “They could barely get it back here let alone wield such a blade. This was Noble’s blade of choice. You’ve met him right? He is the big red guardian with pretty butterfly wings, blood stained through-and-through, and he has a temper to boot. No? Well I’ll have to introduce you. Anyway, this was his favorite weapon until he got really into claw-to-claw combat. I won it off him in a fight not too long ago.” He beamed proudly. “How did you?” She began but quickly sealed her mouth as she saw his fins flair. Ares was barely the size of her hand, but the threatening posture was not lost. “I’m not as helpless as I may look!” He roared “and it wasn’t because I used any underhanded tricks either. I beat him fair-and-square no matter what he says. I’ve never met a more stubborn, proud, thick-skulled warrior in all my days. He needed to learn some humility and no one else was dumb enough to do it.” He breathed slowly calming himself, “Noble’s bulky but slow. He tried to crush me, but I was simply too quick and slippery for him. I was able to topple him without even using a weapon, and ever since he has been trying to beat me at my own game.” “I’m sorry I did not mean any offense, I just wanted to hear the story.” Arpelia said bowing her head in a submissive gesture. She figured it would be unwise to start making enemies after she had just barely gotten here. She wasn’t the most popular dragon in her old home. This was her chance to start over, and she didn’t want to ruin it so soon. Ares continued his rhythmic breathing and sighed seeming to have calmed down. “No harm done. I wanted to tell you the story anyway and I guess yelling it at you is one way. Now come, I’ll show you your new den.” Notes:
