Usako
High Priestess | Seer | Oracle

"...dreams came to dragons for many reasons, both as oracles and as warnings..."

Usako breathed in the moist air deeply. It smelled of flowers, humus and weapon’s oil. She smiled slightly as she turned around to her cousin Loras who was her companion and protector. The constant rain had soaked his elaborate tunic, it was clinging to his well-defined muscles like a second skin. His light-blue eyes scanned the nearby undergrowth, he was always looking out for potential danger. He had advised against venturing into the ancient forests of the Viridian Labyrinth. The Gladekeeper’s realm was a dangerous territory. He feared for her safety, as they were both ill-equipped to survive in this hostile environment. Usako had been born in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, deep beneath the waves. She knew nothing of forests or surviving in the wild. And while Loras had been born and raised in the Southern Icefields and was a seasoned warrior, he knew precious little about living off the lands either. And yet he had followed her here, into the swampy forests enduring her wandering around bogs and marshes without complaining once. Loras was not blessed with the powers of clairvoyance like she was. Usako knew her destiny lay in these swampy and hostile woods. She had seen it in her visions. Something beautiful and powerful was hidden beneath the trees, she just had to find it. The dragoness who was destined to rebuilt what had been destroyed and lain forgotten for so many centuries was close. Their fates were intertwined. And so was Loras’s fate as his was bound to hers. “We should find a place to rest for the night.” Her cousins voice sounded exhausted and weary. Usako nodded in agreement. She was soaking wet, too, and she hardly doubted there was any dry spot anywhere to be found but still they needed to rest.
As she stumbled rather ungracefully after Loras alongside a steep cliff, something shimmering like silver caught her eye down below. The hair on her back suddenly stood on end and goosebumps exploded all over her skin. Usako gasped for air which made Loras turn around in alarm. This was it, Usako thought. The place she had seen in her visions. Without any hesitation, she stepped over the edge of the cliff and spread her wings. The air rushed passed her as she plummeted down. Loras called after her but she didn’t understand what he was saying. Her mind was focused on the beautiful lake that stretched out beneath her. A waterfall rushed over the cliff and fell down dozens of feet right into its deep blue water. White spray splattered the rocks. There were caves hidden beneath the water and in the cliffs. She couldn’t see them but she knew they were there. As her paws touched the ground she nearly fell over. Her legs were shaky and she suddenly felt weak. Loras touched down beside her and rushed to her side. “What the…” he said angrily, but Usako only touched his shoulder softly and pointed up the cliff. Where the waterfall rushed over the edge were the crumbling ruins of what must have been a huge settlement once. Marble arches rose high into the air and there were structures beneath and high up in the trees she couldn’t quite fathom. The setting sun bathed them in red and gold light. It was a breathtaking sight. “We are home, Loras.” Usako whispered and tears of joy streamed down her face.

For whatever we lose, it's always our self we find in the sea.
The golden chains clinked softly as Usako rose from the water. The Clan’s matriarch Fahlyn, Usako’s oldest friend was already waiting for her. She smiled warmly but her mate and the Clan’s Warden Antafes looked as stern as ever. “And I thought you’d come to visit me for a cup of tea. But it seems you are here on Clan’s business?” Usako said softly. Fahlyn smiled apologetically. “I’m here for both. Antafes is just worried. After what your acolyte saw in a vision. And to be honest, I am, too. What does it mean, Usako? Are we in danger, greater danger I mean, than we know?”. Usako sighed. She grabbed a soft towel and began to dry herself. Antafes cleared his throat, he was always so impatient. And he neither trusted in oracles nor visions. Even after his disbelief had almost cost them everything. That he was here now could be seen as an improvement. Usako turned around to face him. “Visions are elusive. I’ve seen what Pythia has seen. Not as clearly as she has, but I know it is out there. This creature has been here since before any of us has set foot into the Sanctuary. He has been here for centuries. And he has been bound for centuries. Will his chains hold forever? Probably not. Is he a threat? Definitely. But he is not our responsibility.” Usako’s eyes became unfocused as she recalled the strange dream, she had had last night. Stars amidst a void, shining brightly. A powerful being.

“Excuse me, Usako, but how do you know he or it isn’t our responsibility? And what is that creature in the first place? What does it want?” Antafes asked impatiently. Usako shook her head slightly to cast off the images of last night’s dream. “I’m not sure what he is, I only know that he is mad with grief and lusting for blood. He is powerful, but so are the chains and magical wards that bind him. I know what you are going to ask, and the answer is no. I don’t know where he is. And even if I knew, I wouldn’t tell you. Some things are better left alone. We shouldn’t interfere.” Antafes growled angrily but Usako just stared right into those livid green eyes. “So we should trust your feelings that this being whatever and wherever it is, is being taken care of by someone or something we don’t know either? This is madness!” Antafes shouted. His tail twitched and banged against the wall. Small pieces of rock fell off the cave’s ceiling but Usako didn’t even blink. Fahlyn touched her mate’s arm and spoke gently. “Perhaps you better go now. Before you do or say something, you regret. I trust Usako, and so does the Council.” Antafes snorted contemptuously, and left the cave without another word.

“I’m sorry, Usako. It’s difficult for him. He never got over the mistakes he made in the First Serthis War. They have been haunting him for decades now.” Usako smiled at her friend. “I know my dear. He is a difficult dragon. Quick to anger and too impulsive. But I know he would give his life to protect the Sanctuary. And he learned from his mistakes. Nonetheless, this creature is not his responsibility. He’d do more harm than good and get himself killed if he tried to confront him.” Fahlyn turned around to the fireplace, grabbed the kettle from the fire and poured the hot water into two mugs that were already standing on the table. A sweet herbal fragrance filled the cave. When Fahlyn turned around, she handed her friend one of the two mugs. “You know what it is, don’t you?” she asked softly. Usako sipped at her tea. “I don’t know what it is.” Fahlyn waved her hand. “Don’t give me that. You have your suspicions. And I know you will not only sit here in your cave, staring at the water and wait for more visions. No offense, Usako, but I know you better. You are not as ethereal and disconnected from this world as you have others believe. You are much more hands on than most would expect. Whom are you going to grill?”

Usako chuckled. Her eyes twinkling mischievously. “You remember the jeweler? The “Imperial” who has taken residence in the Citadel?” Fahlyn stared at her friend. “Yes? What about him?” Usako took another sip, prompting her friend to snort impatiently. “Well, he is not what he pretends to be. Don’t look at me like that, he is not a threat. He pledged his loyalty to our Clan and he meant it. But I can see though his illusion. It’s time for the two of us to talk.” Fahlyn shook her head. “I don’t like that idea. If he conceals what he is, and you confront him, that could be dangerous. Let me come with you, or at least take Loras.” Usako looked at her friend, her eyes were narrowed in concern. “He will not harm me. But I don’t want him to feel threatened. I’ll go alone.” Fahlyn sighed. “At least let me know what you find out. I swear I won’t tell Antafes. But this is not the time to be secretive. Please?” Usako smiled. Her friend was always overly concerned and protective. “I promise I will let you know what I find out. Now, shall we enjoy our tea?” Fahlyn knew better than to press the issue.
