"The darkness is not my ally. It is my birthright."

Once upon a time, the Trickster and the Mage warred.

It was not uncommon for the eleven flights of Sornieth to challenge each other's dominance, but it was rare for the deities themselves to step in. No one knew the cause of the conflict, and no one dare ask. All anyone knew and all that was passed down was the fact that the Shadowbinder and Arcanist had their worst quarrel in history, and that the land paid dearly for the battle.

Perhaps things wouldn't have turned out quite so catastrophic if one of the other deities had stepped in, but before any of them could, the Shadowbinder attacked the Starfall Isles directly and pushed the war past the point of no return. The Arcanist, rightly angered, returned the favour, resulting in the devastation of the Twisted Wood. After that, it was mayhem. No side would step down. The tension between the two flights boiled and tore apart all hopes for compromises.

It seemed that things were hopeless, and that the two flights would really battle it out until nothing was left of their own homelands. Or more precisely, that the deities would fight until the end of dawn. But Fate would not have it so. During one of the final battles between Shadow and Arcane, the Shadowbinder and Arcanist engaged each other in combat. Their powers were so great, that in the collision time itself was stopped, and the land blistered. The day turned dark as night, and the moon rose with a scarlet light that drowned out the sun.

And then, new magic.

The wars between Shadow and Arcane dwindled away quickly after the appearance of the red moon. The deities themselves called a stop to the war, and though neither side would give in to the other or show any forgiveness, the battles did stop, and the two deities disappeared back to their rightful places. None of the other flights knew what could've caused this, but consequently, rumours of strange creatures spread like a plague, whispering fearfully of pitch-black monsters tattooed with the blood of their enemies. Some rumours spoke of teeth rivalling knives, while others murmured of multiple tails. More and more bizarre did the rumours become, until a few mages from Arcane decided that they simply couldn't resist the prospect of new adventure. Calling tentatively for a few Shadow mages, the team, which symbolised a chance of the two flights' cooperation, delved into the Twisted Woods.

There, they found the Bloodmoon.

A combination of Arcane and Shadow magic, the Bloodmoon were nothing like the rumours. They showed little interest in the team of mages, and little hostility as well. The Bloodmoon did not know what was the cause of their creation, nor were they particularly interested as to seek it. They knew that there were other dragons out there, but had not yet cared enough to investigate.

The mages were the ones who sparked their curiosity of the outside world. They told the Bloodmoon of the miraculous magicks and inventions out there, and urged them to step out of the shadows. Though a few of the elder Bloodmoon refused to leave what they considered their sacred birthplaces, several younger, newer Bloodmoon were mildly interested. They left with the mages on dark wings, making a path through the dangerous woods so that those left behind may find the way out. It did not take long for the ones left behind to become curious, and follow the sparkling trail out.

One of them was Aradia.

Queen Raincloud and a couple of her clanmates found Aradia while out gathering. The poor Skydancer, clearly having gone through quite an ordeal, was hanging by a thread by the time the dragons managed to carry her back to the clan. Thankfully, Arcane magic can heal what other magicks can't, and the Bloodmoon was whole and healthy in a matter of days.

But along with her arrival, came a series of strange events. Some of the healers whispered fearfully of mysterious chantings, while other clanmates would swear they'd seen her creeping about in the shadows, disappearing into nothingness at the first sign of approach. More and more, the rumours built up until her clanmates were none too comfortable around the Bloodmoon.

Because of this, Aradia became more reclusive than ever, refusing to interact with her fellow clanmates. Her silhouette became rarer and rarer still to see, and though it was not her clanmates' intention, she became miserable and forlorn. She was alone, without a friend, and loneliness nearly drove her mad.

Then she met Mordred.

Gloomy and surreptitious, Aradia doesn't get along well with other dragons. In fact, with the exception of Mordred, she acknowledges no one else. It's not that she dislikes her clanmates, but she considers them too optimistic and...well, prone to blowing things up. And while Aradia wholly supports her clanmates' advances in magic, she finds them a bit too enthusiastic when it comes to spontaneous combustions.

Since her arrival at the clan, Aradia has made several attempts to control the magic born within her. A scar has etched it way across Aradia's face, a reminder of her previous failed magical experiments, and she expects that there'll be more scars to come in the future. Her mate, Mordred, constantly asks her to stop with such dangerous activities, but that is the one thing Aradia cannot do. She knows her power, fears it, and is afraid that she'll never understand it.

As like other Bloodmoon, Aradia wields powerful magic -- unknown magic, which no one else can teach her how to harness. Because of this, she's grown rather afraid of her powers, and refuses to use them unless absolutely necessary, and never on a clanmate. The last time she tried to use it on a battered fighter from the coliseum...well, to be fair, he did ask for her to regrow his eye, just probably not two, and not in the middle of his forehead.

Aradia darted through the dark undergrowth, eyes scanning the dark. There was no need for night vision magic -- her nocturnal tendencies were enough to allow her sight as long as there was a shred of the moon, but it didn't hurt to look. She paused, her silhouette lost in the shadows.

Had there been movement?

"You should not be out here."

The entire process happened in a matter of seconds. Before Aradia could react, much less see her clanmate, a massive force rammed into her from the side. The two went crashing into the undergrowth, the clan's trainer on top, and Aradia underneath him.

"Let...me...go." Aradia was barely able to growl. The Imperial's claws were heavy against her throat. He was crushing her windpipe. "I was just taking a walk!" She spat.

The pressure lessened slightly. Aradia snatched the opportunity and shoved the larger dragon off of her. He lunged at her, but she was far too fast. By the time a second had passed, she was nestled safely in the shadows of a tree.

The Imperial's magenta eyes gleamed in the dark. He was looking for her, but those who knew the Bloodmoon knew that it was highly unlikely the Shadow-Arcane hybrids would allow themselves to be found. Finally, he seemed to give up.

"It's my duty to protect my clanmates." He told her. "That includes you. And don't think I haven't noticed you sneaking out." He added sternly.

Aradia said nothing, her body tense and ready to spring. She'd heard enough about Mordred to know that her advantages over the night were not enough against him. Besides, he knew that she'd been sneaking out. That was enough reason for her to be still.

"I must practice my magic." She said. "I don't want another accident like last time."

"Even though you might draw the attention of enemies?"

"And why is that of your concern?" Aradia growled, eyeing him suspiciously. If he wanted to drag her back to the clan, she wasn't sure she could fend him off.

Mordred stepped closer, and Aradia no longer had any doubts he could see her.

"You put yourself at risk." He said. "I can't allow that."

For some reason, that set her heart racing. "Why would you care?"

Mordred was quiet for a moment. Aradia stepped further into the shadows, but his burning stare remained on her.

"Because you're always alone." He finally said.

Aradia froze. Emotions boiled inside of her. Her cheeks felt hot. Embarrassment? She wasn't sure. Was he mocking her? It didn't sound like that. He sounded...concerned.

An emotion she was not used to seeing expressed.

"You know what they say about me." She forced herself to be sharp and cold. "I don't play along with others. I'm creepy. Besides, I don't like company. I prefer being alone, and that's something you have no right to be poking your snout into."

His voice was disgruntled. "Of course I don't. But I've been watching you long enough --" He caught himself here, cleared his throat. "I mean...during the nights. Sometimes I patrol the cave you train in. I wouldn't...I didn't..."

Aradia's cheeks turned hotter still. This Imperial had been watching her nighttime activities? She scrambled her mind for something to say, but came up with nothing. She thought she should try to be polite. After all, he was trying to help, wasn't he?

"Listen." She took a deep breath. "I'm grateful that you're watching out for me. I truly am. But I am Bloodmoon. I have powers others can only dream of having, and I must learn to control it. I must train myself, and it cannot be within the lair. So I have to come out here." She raised her head and met the Imperial's searing gaze. "You have my gratitude, but I won't allow myself to be kept away from my training spot."

Mordred's eyes narrowed, and Aradia suddenly found herself upset, afraid of the disapproval in his eyes. She shook her head angrily. Why should she care what this dragon thought? But still...a voice inside her whispered, pleaded, pounded against her chest...

"Go."

Aradia blinked. "What?"

Mordred extended a wing, backing up.

"I won't stop you if that's what you want." He said. Was that warmth in his voice? Aradia felt dizzy. "Though you'll have to pardon me if I continue to see it my duty to protect you."

It took a moment for Aradia to reply. "You...don't you have other things to protect."

"I do, but..." He swung his head away and gazed up at the moon. "Please give me the honour of protecting you. It'll make me feel better."

Aradia wasn't sure how to respond to this. Her heart broke into a sprint, and she to battle for her composure.

"Thank you." She edged cautiously out of the shadows. Mordred didn't move. "I'll see you later."

He leaned over and touched her cheek. And for some reason, she didn't move away.

"Be safe."
