She hatched alone.

(Later, she would wonder about this. The Plague Flight is much maligned for what it represents; the denizens of the Scarred Wasteland are strong and adaptable, survivors to the core, but their home and their values often disgust members of other Flights. Her birthplace is at the very edge of the Starwood Strand, where Arcane and Plague energies mingle. Her parents, she hypothesises, miscalculated; they mistakenly laid their clutch in an area where Plague magic dominated, rather than their native Arcane. Unwilling, perhaps, to take on one of the Plaguebringer's children, they left the egg at the mercies of the Wasteland.)

(This is, of course, only a theory.)

Small and confused, she wandered the Contagion, surviving off anything she could fit in her mouth - a mirror is a ravenous and unfussy creature, and a growing hatchling doubly so. Still, this was not a tenable state of affairs: if not for blind luck, she’d long have starved or fallen prey to other scavengers of the Wasteland.

Blind luck arrived in the shape of a travelling pearlcatcher: a young mage making the long journey from the Shifting Expanse to the Starfall Isles in search of further education (1). After quite literally stumbling over the small mirror, so well had she camouflaged herself, Sabik took pity, convinced the pup to accompany her, and gave her a name: Azmidiske.

Sabik had not planned on this being a permanent arrangement. She’d reach the Isles and the research centres within, and she’d find some nice family willing to take in the little mirror, then continue on with her studies. Azmidiske had a very different agenda: for the first time in her short life she’d found someone willing to help, willing to care, and that was not something she’d be letting go any time soon. Not if she could do anything about it.

(And did she. Boy howdy, did she ever. There’s no greater force in the world than a small child with smarts and determination.)

Mirrors are not known for their magical prowess, so it came as quite a shock to most everyone but Azmidiske herself when she proved particularly adept at it. It was not her greatest love, however: no, that title went to Science. She found herself endlessly fascinated by the inner workings of life, of the world, of the universe, and it was that that she pursued. Spellcrafting was all well and good, but… what’s more magical than a simple plant? what’s greater than the structure of a wing, what’s more extraordinary than the function of a brain?

They won’t let her find out, though. Even after all her time walking their hallowed halls, dancing to the beat of the committee’s drums, it’s always ethics this, danger that -- and she has questions! Burning questions, like what happens to an organism when bathed in magical radiation? why do emperors really form? is there a way to reverse it?

She did not give up her fight. But she did take it elsewhere.

She took with her her best friend - a fellow plague dragon, a guardian named Hadar - and a number of her equally disgruntled colleagues and students, and they absconded across the border, back to the Wasteland she was born in, to set up a newer, better institution of education.

This did not go well.

Obviously.

There’s a great many reasons things went so poorly, but the main culprits were cockiness and a lack of background checks. Very rapidly they discovered the necessity of good construction workers, and also why there was an ethics committee in the first place. These were not mistakes they would repeat, but first they needed to survive them.

Soon enough, the rebel scientists were down to just a handful: Azmidiske, Hadar, their mutual close friend Alhena, a couple others, and, after a poor decision on the part of Azmidiske and Hadar, another three young mouths to feed (2).

Mirrors, especially female Mirrors, aren't really my forte, despite what my icon might tell you. This one though, this absolutely beautiful darling, I love her. Her colors are stunning, those genes making them blend together perfectly, with the apparel almost masking the transition from Green Okapi to Seafoam Tiger. I really thought she was all Green or all Jungle aside from her wings. I absolutely adore her, beautiful murder puppy, would cuddle.
