[Part 1]

She holes up in the basilica when they arrive. At first it seems natural-- it's one of the few buildings left mostly intact, a natural base of operations for the clan's leaders. Large enough to seat heads of military and magecraft-- but the others come in and out. Night passes to day passes to Night-- shade? Where is she? When Anubis arrives a few days later his legs tremble, he stumbles when he lands, and then he goes in to greet her. She has not left the basilica.

It starts as a murmur. Is she alright? Sick? Wounded on the expedition? "It can't have been good for her," Heza says one afternoon, stretching her massive wings up towards the sky. "She's always had a rather anxious disposition. I'm sure she's just a bit rattled." Pelagia nods, uncertain. She has not been in to see her.

But it passes. Night turns to day turns to night and Nightshade emerges one warm afternoon without ceremony. Her attire has not changed, but there may be something different in the way she carries herself, covertly, like both dagger and the cloak that hides it. When she is outside she can only be found in the shadows of buildings, slinking along corridors like a ghost evading notice. Her pale eyes avoid pale eyes.

"So, if she was a spider," Adria says to Shardas one morning, watching Nightshade flank the far side of the marketplace from high up in the south-east tower. "What do you think-- more of a widow, or a recluse?"
