Creature of the Cauldron

Mephita was created when an egg, stolen, traded, and eventually purchased by the Clan of Singing Blood, was submerged in Putridus's Fumarole Cauldron as part of an ongoing alchemical experiment. Putridus monitored the egg there are cared for it until it hatched within the cauldron itself. The hatchlings first breaths were not air, but great gulps of the incubating fluids Putridus had maintained in the cauldron. The pearlcatcher hauled the new dragon from the cauldron, but after that, she never did stray far from it. She remained in that chamber until near adulthood, developing among the toxins and stranger compounds under the watchful eye and careful direction of the Alchemist.

Putridus did not neglect her health, physical or mental. Though tutors for her would have to come into the chamber where she was kept. His goals were to create a fantastic creature, pure and powerful, not to study some sad mutated sack of bones and sickness in a lab.

Giftgiver

Mephita did grow to be that which pleased Putridus, though his constant favor made her vain. By some standards, she might be considered hideous and unapproachable. Horrific growths, of teeth and claws and withered limbs, seem to hang from her, raw and gleaming blood red wings held around her like the tattered sails of some cursed ship. If that were not discouragement enough, there is the horrific and gagging scent from the toxic gasses which hang around her. Those gasses are produced by the mask she wears - as the air outside the cauldron chamber is unsuitable to sustain her breath.

However, her beauty is largely undisputed by her peers, and even mentioned once by the Queen herself. That, of course, serves only to fuel her vanity. This, combined with her alchemical mastery brought her to her calling within the clan. She serves as something of a radical cosmetic master. She uses techniques which include surgical procedures, plague magic, and alchemical mutagens to alter the appearances and traits of dragons who come to her. She can make a weak dragon strong, and an ugly dragon beautiful, though they may be bound to her own aesthetic ideals if they come to her.
