"Even though I'm a bit damaged, I'm still useful in my own way."

His parents knew there was something wrong the minute he hatched, for he emerged from his egg with only a stump where his left leg should have been. They did their best to help their son get around in spite of his disability, but they soon realized that he had other conditions, namely chronic respiratory ailments. He was frequently short of breath, and he often erupted into coughing fits, even coughing up blood at times.

Though he was still quite young when his parents separated, there was never any question as to which parent he would stay with - he would not survive long without the medicines and therapies his physician father Cindermoon provided. Though he wished his father wasn't so snappy and short-tempered, he sympathized that the animals constantly demanding his attention made his father's life perhaps even more difficult than his own disability did. Though he didn't inherit his father's odd ability and therefore couldn't understand the speech of animals, he did enjoy playing with them when the animals permitted it.

Seeking steady work, his father moved them to the capital of the Sevenbranch region and opened an office there. Curious about the medical field and anxious to be of some use and not just a burden, Hazel studied his father's books and paid close attention to how he made his medicines and the way he bound various injuries. Soon he was able to assist his father in his practice, providing another pair of hands to tie bandages and mix herbal remedies. He also discovered that, like his father, his innate empathetic abilities tended toward the extreme in one area - he was able to enter into the mind and psyche of another dragon, to help them work through mental and emotional traumas and stresses. He was eager to show off to his father, hoping that such an addition would help their foundering medical practice, as few dragons came back after they encountered the hoard of animals his father attracted. Hesitant, Cindermoon permitted him to attempt mind-healing on a few patients. Hazel's ability was not without its risks, both for himself and his patients, and after one harrowing episode where he was barely able to tear his mind away from the twisted remnants of a patient's memories, his father forbade him to try such techniques again until he was grown and had had more training.

Even though he didn't always agree with his father, he didn't think anything would ever entice him to leave his father's side, but one night he heard a beautiful song, full of the promise of freedom and eternal youth. Enchanted, he attached his prosthetic limb and hobbled out into the street, following a hoard of hatchlings all as entranced as he as they were led by a little coatl who ducked and dove and sang his way through the streets of Sevenbranch. Though Hazelmist tried his best to keep up, the chilly air wrecked havoc on his lungs, and the metal of his false limb turned freezing cold and burned his stump. He was soon far behind, and when he reached the crack in the cliff side through which the others had disappeared, it was closed to him. He was found there in the morning by searchers, barely breathing, injuries on his forearms where he had tried to pull open the rent in the cliff to follow the others.

When he recovered, wrapped up safe in his own bed in his father's office, he learned that he was the only hatchling left in Sevenbranch and that his father had not once left his side since he was returned to him, nursing him back from the brink of death. Though a small part of him wished he could have been with the others, to have seen the enchanting world the little coatl had promised to show them, he realized that for once his disability was a blessing and that it had narrowly saved him from an unknown fate. Once back to his usual level of ill health, he threw himself into helping his father, though he soon realized that their trickle of patients had dwindled even further thanks to jealousy that his father still had a son, sick and disabled as he was, while they had none.

Hazel had been excited for the Crystalline Gala, but his father had no interest in frequenting the festivities and wasn't about to let his son out of his sight, and at any rate his lungs were still aching from that long night spent out in the harsh air in the shadow of the cliff, so instead he remained inside in his father's patient-less office, studying medical texts. He was as surprised as his father when two strangers walked in seeking cold medicine, and perhaps even more surprised when the pearlcatcher, a shadow dragon like his father, turned out to be one of his relations.

While the pearlcatcher's mate ventured into the spirit realm to retrieve the hatchlings who had been taken, Hazel and his father helped heal the pearlcatcher's cold. Hazel sensed that his kin Winternight was haunted by elements of his past and wished that he could go into his mind and help to heal him of them, but both his father and Winternight refused - his father because he feared anything happening to his son, and Winternight because he didn't want his young relation scarred by what had happened to him. Regardless, Winter seemed impressed by them, and he offered them a place to live and work in his new home in the Starfall Isles. Hazel was relieved when his father accepted - he looked forward to leaving the cold behind and exploring a new place.

As their new office was being built in Lantern Port and his father finally allowed him to wander about on his own, Hazel set about exploring the town and the island and meeting the residents. When he first went for a walk with the arthritic imperial Ember, he was grateful to have finally found someone who naturally matched his own slow pace, and Ember introduced him to the pearlcatcher Blain, who likewise suffered from a chronic condition. The three of them occasionally meet to discuss the hardships of living with bodies that just don't perform as they wish they would. He longs to try his mind-healing abilities on his new friends or some of the clan's other dragons, many of whom were scarred by the events of the Barrier Breach, but his father is adamant that he refrain from doing so, and the others all seem too afraid to let a strange skydancer into their psyche. Even if they don't want him in their minds, most of the clan is quite happy to have the kind young dragon in their lives and is eager to help him in any way they can. Many of the clan's mechanically-minded craftsdragons had a look at his leg and offered suggestions for its improvement, but the imperial Genim and the pearlcatcher Hollis designed his current prosthetic, and it is lighter and more limber than any he has used in the past.
