I really love that Lyalise has a completely different perspective [from Kayla's] of what happened to the clan from the Shade attack because of her approximation to the queen and her role in the clan. It definitely benefits her lore if not the lore of the clan as a whole. Anyway, Lyalise is probably the kind of person I would want as a friend-- she seems responsible, loyal, softhearted. Definitely on the opposite side of the spectrum as Kayla cx Reading their lore back-to-back was quite a contrast.

“Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong? You can trust me. You know you can trust me.”

“I know. But I still can’t tell you.”

The monochromatic Skydancer scuffed her feet in frustration. Something was wrong. The Queen was restless, always walking around the tunnels at midnight and muttering to herself. She looked drawn and exhausted. Her mood was spreading through the clan, worry jumping from dragon to dragon like a new disease. Everyone was jumpy and quick to snap. Plenty of small fights had broken out over the last week alone.

Lyalise had decided to get to the root of things before the sickness spread any further. She had waited until Veilerris was alone, taking one of her harried walks, and slid up beside her. Lyalise knew the Queen’s routine by heart, and Veilerris hadn’t been surprised to see her. It was a common sight, the two of them walking side by side.

But the queen wasn’t talking this time, a worried grimace fixed on her face. She was tense and nervous, almost prowling as she walked. She had barely seemed to notice her advisor at all.
Lyalise was growing frustrated. She picked at her jewelry to distract herself from the silence between her and Veilerris. She would wait until the Queen was ready to speak.

Her mind drifted as they walked. A mistake had driven Lyalise to the Abiding Boneyard and beyond. Days of wandering had turned into months of drifting like a ghost. She would flit from clan to clan, nameless, offering her poor skills to hunt some insects or help dig out a den. When she grew tired or restless, she would move on without a trace. Constant movement made her feel safer. She had grown used to the rhythm, had even started to like the vagueness that clouded her mind in those days.

Then someone had recognized her.

Lya?

She had arrived at this clan with wild eyes and fear in her heart. She had run along the bone wall and come face to face with a Plague militia. The fear pushed all sense out of her and she babbled something about being taken in. They had led her to the Queen, who must have seen herself in the frantic skydancer. She had looked at Lyalise with a curious, calculating expression.

What can you do?

Anything you ask. Anything.

And so the Queen had accepted. From the smallest task to the most impressive undertaking, Lyalise had proved that there was nothing she wouldn’t do. Lyalise was desperate to stay with them. The vast tunnels of the clan provided plenty of hiding places for someone like her. Someone like her—an outlaw? Whatever she was, for the first time in months she had felt safe.

The constant strife of the Abiding Boneyard had sharpened her mind. She had never been very strong and fights—especially among smaller clans—were a daily occurrence. She had learned to read the signs. An angry look, a frustrated mutter, a sword swung a little too hard in training, Lyalise saw them all. This clan had plenty of strife too; living in Plague was hard, no matter how nice the dens or how competent the leader.

She took the time to talk to her clanmates when she saw those signs. Intelligent and pragmatic, the others began to listen to her. Slowly, disputes began to be resolved before they turned into fights. Less dragons wound up injured or nursing some secret grudge.

Lyalise had begun joining the Queen on her walks to keep her informed. At first, their talks had been all business. Who had been injured in training and how long they’d be out for, what shortages might cause frustration, how a small hole in the bone wall was making everyone nervous…But eventually, she and the Queen had started talking about other things. The Queen had grown to rely on her, even like her. Lyalise was soft-spoken, but with a backbone of steel and a useful ability to summon up a frigid glare. If Lyalise wasn’t at her side, she was getting between two dragons twice her size to stop a fight.

They were almost like friends, thought Lyalise, if Veilerris was capable of making friends. She swore she caught her smiling a few times. As for the skydancer, Lyalise was just happy to be needed. She appreciated Veilerris’s quiet, powerful presence. It made her feel safe.
So why couldn’t the Queen trust her now? It hurt. If the advisor to the queen couldn’t advise the Queen, something had gone very wrong.

“Are you afraid?” Her voice was low and soft. Veilerris finally looked at her. Then she pulled her into an unfinished den.

“Would you lie for me?” It caught the skydancer off guard. Her eyes darted up to the Queen’s face. Her expression was intent.

“I—“

“Yes or no, Lyalise?” The queen placed a claw on her shoulder and gripped tightly.

Lyalise hesitated. Veilerris was a wise queen. Strong and iron-willed, but wise. She knew what she was doing. If Veilerris asked her to lie, it was important.

But it scared her anyway.

“Y-yes.”

The Queen nodded and looked away. Lyalise sighed and shook herself off. What had she just agreed to?

“There might come a time when I will ask that of you. Thank you, Lyalise. I can’t tell you what’s wrong, yet. But maybe soon.” Her voice was low and charged with an uncomfortable intensity.
Lyalise nodded. It would have to be good enough.

“So, how is Citrine doing?” The Queen was abruptly back to normal.

“Oh, well, your Majesty. I just saw her yesterday. You know, she told me the funniest story…”

It happened so long ago it seemed.

Lyalise joined that clan as a young and fearful dragon. She would like to think that she could still claim those titles; that the disaster hadn't changed her. The decimation of their clan damaged them all unspeakably, but even so, she was still the same Lyalise in a sense wasn't she?

She hoped so.

The few who survived the months, was it really months? It felt so long. That place strained the mind to their breaking points, and some did break. The time they spent there, cowering in fear in the archives under the clan, it was harrowing. For those who could fight, they patrolled endlessly. Always in threes, always ready to draw their blades or spells in a fraction of a heartbeat, and always ready to turn on their friends and family in case of the worst.

In case of a possession.

For the rest, they had to wait. The waiting was almost worse than the guard shifts at times. Lyalise helped where she could. She was one of a few dragons to maintain living conditions - sleeping arrangements, bedding, ration dispersal, and keeping morale up as a whole.

Giving occasional advice on the situation, seeing that she was one of the Queen's advisors. Not that it meant anything then, the Queen wasn't even in control. Lyalise didn't mind, she thought it was for the best. Let the ones who spent decades of their lives learning, perfecting every single piece of what to do in a Shade attack, deal with the Shade attack.

After so long of just being down there, once they finally escaped, she didn't know what it was like not to be afraid. It consumed her. The nightmares plagued her, even when they found a new clan. She wasn't the only one. She was better than some, as she was fortunate enough to avoid all contact with the Shade in their last battle with it. She was paired with the Queen, and Veilerris was more than capable of making sure those around her weren't even touched by it.

It didn't stop the nightmares.

She hoped time would.
