He had ecstasies innumerable that other children can never know; but he was looking through the window at the one joy from which he must be for ever barred.

When Puer emerged from his egg he was an ordinary little coatl hatchling, though the boastful fellow will deny ever having been remotely ordinary. He spent his days playing in the snow, but when the adults around him began to speak of duties and responsibilities and he observed them going about businesses he considered tedious beyond all measure, he grew frightened at the thought of growing up and ran away from home.

He might have perished in the snow, but out of a swirl of snowflakes came a beautiful spirit who called herself the Snow Queen. Each found the other equally curious, and soon she learned of his desire to never grow up. Admiring the purity of his wish, she granted him eternal youth and took him with her into the spirit realm. Due to the Snow Queen's gift, he slowly metamorphosed from mortal dragon into a spirit. His wings had never matured, but he found he could fly with magic.

For some time he delighted in his freedom and in the Snow Queen's realm, but soon he grew lonely, for he had endless time to play but no playmates. Though the Snow Queen had no desire for companionship, when she was slighted by the dragons of Sevenbranch, she permitted him to go into the mortal realm and steal away their hatchlings, to bring them into her palace to become his playmates. Delighted, he flew through the opening between the realms that she created and darted up and down the streets of Sevenbranch, singing an enchanting melody promising freedom and endless play. All of the hatchlings followed him through an opening in the cliff face (though he didn't realize until long after that one of them didn't make it in time) and into the Snow Queen's realm, and for a time he was happy, surrounded by other hatchlings who could join in his games.

Though some, like him, reveled in never being ordered about by adults and were happy to explore their new home, others seemed terrified and huddled miserably, crying about wanting to return to their parents. What's more, even he, self-centered as he was, began to notice that his new playmates were beginning to suffer ill effects the longer they remained in the spirit realm. He was immune thanks to the gift of the Snow Queen, but the other hatchlings had no such blessings or protections, and he began to worry as the other hatchlings, even those who delighted in his company, grew weaker.

Then a bothersome adult coatl showed up and asked to see the Snow Queen so he could negotiate for the return of the hatchlings. Puer found it eerie to look at him, for the coatl was also an ice dragon as he had been, and he had the same colors on his hide - perhaps Puer would have been like him had he remained a mortal dragon and grown up. After some haggling, the Snow Queen told the coatl that the hatchlings could return to Sevenbranch with him, much to Puer's annoyance; he didn't want to lose his playmates, even if he could recognize that they were ill-suited to the spirit realm. The coatl, Ez, compromised with him, telling him that he could visit his home in the Starfall Isles and play with the island's hatchlings whenever he desired it.

Puer was quick to take the coatl up on his offer, showing up on the island of Prufrock and demanding to play with the clan's hatchlings. Though he loves making new friends every time a clutch of eggs hatches, he suffers bereavement as they grow up and leave him behind...though he quickly becomes distracted by a new generation of playmates. He is forever trying to convince them not to grow up, to remain with him always, but for some reason, none have taken him up on his offer. Their refusal always baffles him, as he can't understand wanting to grow up.
