Nctolhu, originally known as Sleth, had a rather miserable early life as a street urchin. One day, they were picked up by a gang who pressed them into helping them with their unsavory plans. Nearby sat a creepy, abandoned temple, dedicated to some strange god that wasn't one of the eleven, and the local rumor was that it contained some sort of great treasure that would curse whoever removed it--so of course, the gang wanted to make someone else go in and get it.

The temple belonged to Beledhgotha, who, fortunately, took pity on Sleth when they touched the treasure, an idol carved from rose quartz. Enamored by their loveliness, Beledhgotha took them on as their retainer, and gave them the name Nctolhu, to match the name of a companion the god had picked out for them from among their followers.

The gang was punished in some way, never to be heard from again, while Nctolhu began enjoying their new life of unprecedented luxury. It was hard to adjust to, but they were incredibly grateful to the god and quickly became very attached, to the point of envying anyone else who drew Beledhgotha's attention.
