Lucky Kaa

There’s an orphan on your doorstep, and they’re grinning. They were left on a doorstep like this, once, did you know? Egg placed at the temple without a backwards glance; no note, just a golden drachma tucked up beside it. The mint-mark bears the crescent of the Shadow flight; a curiosity, then, that this orphan’s eyes are a brilliant as the sun, gleaming with the same colouring as their coin. The first possession of an orphan is not to be trifled with, and if you were to see this coin, you’d see it worn, details and dates and clean lines lost to time and wear, rubbed against fur and paw until only the gold shine remains.

But for their upbringing, this individual is clever, quick-witted; they’ve been reading the streets since they were small. Born with nothing to their name but a singular coin, they’ve spent quite a lot of their life attempting to secure themselves the basics; food, shelter, wealth. They’re drawn to money, but they haven’t the constitution to make it honestly; why would they, when the crooked path ends so much quicker? So they’ve learnt from the best; gangs, con-artists, charlatans of every shape and size. They’re good with numbers, too, quite proficient with their sums. This is – unsurprisingly – a skill that not many possess. So, when they leave ‘margins’ or fudge numbers, add and subtract and multiply sums that don’t add up, well... let’s just say that they tend to get away with it.

So here they are, on your doorstep, fur windswept, tousled, tangled completely by the wind. If it weren’t for those eyes, you’d think them shadowborn; there’s something devious about that posture, that smile, those intent golden eyes. And, for all trouble you think a grin like that will bring, you usher them in.
