"I might look dull, but I shine brightly." Born elsewhere in the Starfall Isles, the coatl was set adrift, banished unnamed, his dull, unhealthy coloring blamed for the fact that there had been no other eggs in his clutch. He finally washed ashore on the island of Prufrock near Michelangelo's Cave. It was the enigmatic Sombra who discovered him, he and the ghosts who shared the cave - but Sombra had once had to deal with cursed hatchlings, and he wasn't thrilled to see another one just show up on his doorstep. He decided to let someone else deal with the problem, so he wrapped the little coatl in a blanket and sent him up to the library spire. The little hatchling was surprised when he got there that several dragons fought to adopt him. A particularly smothering snapper nearly won, but finally a tundra named Emrys, the head librarian, claimed the right to raise him along with his mate, the guardian Elyta. Though tentative at first around strangers, the newly named Albus soon gained more confidence as others around him treated him with kindness and respect rather than fear and disdain. There were other pale coatl on the island, and though the clan had its share of sick dragons (and had had cursed dragons as well), none saw his plumage as an indicator of his health or his worth. Jinx told him a (long, admittedly rambling) story about how he had thought he was cursed thanks to his dull plumage but wasn't - and look at the beautiful patterns Skah over at the salon had painted on his wings! Albus would look great with them, Jinx said, but Albus liked his plain wings just fine. As he grew, he did his best to please his adoptive mother, but he had little talent for martial combat. Instead, he took after his father, loving books and being prodigious at magic. One of the clan's leaders, a fellow arcane coatl named Vespers, also tutored him in magic, and he loved the old coatl's stories almost as much as his magic lessons. He never forgot Sombra, though - the first face he had seen on the island - and soon uncovered the tale of how the coatl had been cursed and why he was always seen with that staff. Albus tried many times to approach the other coatl, but he was always brushed off, so he finally hit upon an idea. He researched spells for quite a while, covertly asking his father and Vespers for help while trying to hide the true purpose of his line of questioning. He even questioned the peach tree spirits, kin to the spirit who had cursed Sombra. At long last, he was ready. Positioning himself in a magic circle he had carefully inscribed around him, he ripped the staff from Sombra's side and ported it clear across the island, making it appear in a circle he had drawn next to his. The powerful pattern of the circle worked to negate the curse on the staff, slowly leeching out the hate and pain of the spirit who had cursed it. Exhausted, he completed the last flourish of the spell, and the circles dissipated. The staff floated to rest on the ground. Now completely devoid of the curse, it was a simple, non-magical staff of peach wood. Very proud of himself, he made his way over to Michelangelo's Cave and returned the staff to Sombra. Sombra was at first enraged that Albus had "ruined" his staff and refused to speak with or even see the other coatl. He eventually softened, though, under the influence of the ghosts and his former mate - he realized how much nicer it was not to have the curse hovering over his head, the staff following him around like a badly trained dog. His jealousy that Albus had figured out what he could not lessened, and he began to spend more time outside of the cave, interacting once again with the clan's denizens. Sombra is still not entirely social, by any means, but he has made progress, and he is most often seen in the company of his new friend Albus, deep in discussions of magical theory. He still carries around the staff, but now both he and Albus view it as a symbol of new beginnings rather than dead ends. |
