Shaila was born to a nest of two in Osprey Cove. Compared to her nestmate, Isadore, Shaila was always more impatient. Hungry for more. Her brother was willing to accept his lot in like, to be carefully nurtured into his role as a faithful servant of the Icewarden. An honor, everyone agreed. Shaila on the other hand, didn't particularly want to go to the fortress. There was so much to see right here - and even further outside the borders of the Southern Icefields!

Asra, Shaila's elder sister, the only of their parents children who had their blessing to stay with the clan, saw Shaila's hunger for more early on. It reminded Asra of another of their sisters - one that had run away and left to explore. Asra didn't want this story to end the same way, so she took Shaila under her wing, so to speak. Shaila's sister had never been especially good with children, but she appeared to be an exception to that rule.

It was Asra's idea to tell Shaila about the coliseum. Shaila's sister had undergone rigorous training when she was young as well, and so she told Shaila of the many places she had gone. The many battles she had fought and the wondrous treasures she'd managed to find. It was no surprise that Shaila hung only her elder sister's every words - and that she harbored deep in her heart a fierce desire to witness the sights from Asra's stories for herself.

It should come as no shock that as soon as she was old enough Shaila demanded that Asra take her outside the clan - to take her to the woods that Asra so often spoke of. Asra had told her of many places, but Boreal Woods was the closest as far as Shaila herself could piece together.

At first, Asra refused. But Isadore had already gone on respectably to serve the Icewarden as well as he could, so Asra knew time was getting short before their parents would become impatient with Shaila's own progress. Shaila would soon be expected to be bundled off like a good and honorable daughter. But Asra and Shaila both knew that she would never agree to that and would run off before it came to it.

So Asra did agree to take Shaila out. She pretended not to see when Shaila packed extras, more than she would need for a simple outing to Boreal Woods. They went out together, and when they went out far enough Shaila couldn't even bring herself to speak, but Asra seemed to know anyway. "Promise to write at least, little sister." Asra told her gently, remembering another sister whose fate was still unknown to her, who had disappeared without another word. She didn't want the same fate for this one.

"I will." Shaila swore, and then turned to face the rest of her life. She had a long journey ahead of her, and she absolutely couldn't wait.
