Biography
Calahan
Clan Archivist and Coleader
"You're interested in my studies? I'm so glad to hear that! Here I keep record of clan history, members, organization, and. . .well, anything you could hope to learn about us. Please, read all you like; I'm always adding things in an effort to keep up with clan activity, but even learning part of what I've collected would be well worth your time." *friendly but awkward smile* |

Clan Life: Surviving in the Fortress of Ends
Our home is far from hospitable, and we find that not all members of our clan stay here for long. Only the thick-skinned can face the subzero temperatures experienced daily, and if those dragons who are too weak do not leave promptly, they will not survive their first night. That being said, the caves Shade found, which some of our own clan have added to through tireless scraping and digging, offer enough shelter for the rest of us.
Our warriors, and even our mages, though not often away to do battle, are always prepared and capable. We find that few clans challenge us to battle; no others desire to take our unforgiving mountain. However, the occasional yeti will wander in, causing more than enough trouble for our liking.
Every dragon has their job, and no daylight is wasted in getting an early start on them. From hunters and guards to artisans and scholars, we make sure every dragon who chooses to join us can somehow help the clan become stronger. We are spread thin, especially in the coldest season, yet we have managed thus far by most effectively applying our resources, materials and dragons alike. All the same, we experience some losses each year when the prey doesn't run well, and those who have passed in our effort to survive are buried and honored for their tenacity.
Hierarchy and Roles
Our lair is organized into sections; role dictates a dragon's living space, excepting those taking care of nests in a separate cave.
The Council:
Members of the council receive lesser caves to use as personal space; some dragons within the clan cry out against this "special treatment" of our higher-ranking members, but in the end a small dank room to oneself is no better than sharing the warmth of one's clanmates anyway, and most dragons come to realize this.
Highest up the chain of command sits Shade, our leader and self-proclaimed Alpha. The second-in-command, currently Thorin, sits beside him and oversees clan activity in his absence. Shruikan acts as the general of our warriors, though we admittedly see little action since not many envy our territory anyway. Next is the organizer of clan affairs, Nyx, who recently rose to her position; she ties our loose ends together to make the clan run more smoothly and coordinates the jobs of the different groups within the clan. I act as a sort of advisor to Shade, but my position in the council is mostly due to my participation in founding the clan and is more or less honorary; I prefer my librarian-type work to being in charge of so many dragons.
Also included in our council are the eleven dragons who act as ambassadors to clans of other flights. Because they perform key diplomatic work, they are included in most discussions, though their ranking is not always regarded highly among dragons who claim this group isn't all that necessary in a clan which is so removed from society.
Avalanche and Callista loiter in the council cave and are permitted to stay by virtue of being the children of Shade. They technically do not participate in our discussions or hold any real power, although they certainly like to pretend they are important and high-ranking dragons in the clan. The young Tundra we just took in is being looked after by the council at this time, due to his striking resemblance to our deity, the Icewarden, and his remarkably powerful affinity to our element. The Guardian who has thus far refused to reveal his name has earned enough respect in the clan to warrant a place in the council cave; he has no official role at this point, but many dragons whisper that he aims to take Shruikan's place as general one day. The statue-born Obelisk is under Shade's protection as one of the first of her kind to be found. Finally, the young Gaoler rescued from a winter storm has shown an interest in the clan's politics, and I've been more than delighted to take him under my wing.
First-Generation Dragons:
Those eggs our clan's scavengers have found and we have taken in are in a class all their own. While some have taken a place on the council, those who have not cluster with each other in their own cavern. They do not feel a strong family bond towards the other dragons of the clan, most of which chose to live with us whereas these dragons never knew another home, so they often bond only with each other. Unfortunately, most act as recluses and hide away in the depths of our cave system, although they are still technically part of the clan.
Clan Members:
The rest of the clan is divided based on their roles. Our warriors and guards are constantly meeting, whispering and planning as if war will break out any day. Those dragons who venture out of the caves every day to explore or gather food huddle together at the end of each day, exhausted but unable to resist regaling each other with their most recent adventures. Builders and scholars work quietly together in yet another cave, not saying much but forming a certain companionship mutual respect for each other's work. Finally, Shade keeps the so-called "pretty faces" in one of the more cramped and drafty caves; these dragons do a great deal to support us by creating goods and bartering with other clans for materials we could never find in the Southern Icefield, but too often they are overlooked within our own clan.
If you wish to learn more about all of our clan's members, I suggest visiting them. Surely they can share their life experiences better than I ever could for them.

Dragons/Hatchlings I Didn't Keep:
If any dragon has been exalted, I generally regard them as "dead" or as fodder I pretend never existed. If a dragon of mine is exalted without being named, I say whichever clan exalted them that way murdered them (even if it's my own, oops)--while I'm not going to go after someone for exalting something I didn't name myself, this still adequately sums up my feelings for exalting Unnameds. If someone keeps one of my dragons, first I want to say thanks :), but it's been kicked out of my lore--not gonna keep track of what dragons of mine are still alive, much as I'd like to be able to call them all mercenaries or whatnot.
Hibernal Den:
I can't imagine half of my clan deciding to sleep for an indeterminate amount of time, so lore-wise my hibernating dragons have retreated to the depths of the clan's cave system during free time, flatly refusing to go to battle, having no interest in mates, etc to explain the mechanics.
Fodder I'm Holding:
Frankly, I don't care enough about this, at least for the time being, so I ignore any fodder (in Lair or Den) in lore. Maybe in the future I'll have time to organize some lore for those sections of my Lair, but it's not a priority right now
Remarkably intelligent for a Tundra, Calahan is on a mission to document all that goes on in her clan. Her calm determination despite widespread disbelief in her capabilities has won her respect within the clan, even among some who devalue others of her breed. |
