Aneirin's life was devoid of meaning, hope, and light. He never could relate to his family or clanmates and each day he felt himself slipping further and further into the bottomless nothing that was somewhere inside of him. He had friends that cared about him, the only ones in the world that knew the friendly smile was just a facade and that there was nothing behind it. There never would be. Aneirin was born seemingly without a soul, a living husk of a dragon. They tried to help him but all they could do was cry out in vain as they watched him ultimately become as dead as he felt.

But such is the curse written in the runes that mark his hide. Aneirin was doomed to live as emotionless as a statue, to never feel like he could ever possibly matter to anyone. But his runes kept him from truly dying. He remains bound to the world, now a true spirit without a body. And now, despite being dead he has never felt more alive.

In life he was a pit of depression, lost in the dark. Now he has been freed from his curse and finds himself able to actually enjoy himself. He can stand in the sun and just imagine how the warmth would feel if he were corporeal and even though it's just a thought, it brings him pleasure. In life his world was a series of facts with nothing behind them. He would fake a smile, momentarily laugh at a fleeting joke but ultimately the darkness was unending. Now there is nothing but light.

Aneirin wandered Sornieth for centuries, not particularly caring about anything other than simple joys: the sound of a summer morning, a flower brave enough to open in early spring, a curious animal unafraid of a ghost. He came to connect to animals more than dragons as most dragons tend to shy away from ghosts, and due to his lack of understanding when he was alive, he tends to shy away from them. But for some reason Aneirin has a gift with animals. Even the most skittish Warcat will eventually roll over in front of him for a belly rub.

(After so many centuries, Aneirin has learned how to make himself physical with the exception of the edges of his wings, the tip of his tail, and his eyes which have a constant white glow. If one doesn't look too closesly he can often be mistaken for a living dragon as he prefers to remain physical so as to better interact with the world and its creatures.)

He was befriended by Fayne after he managed to tame a particularly wild beast that the Bogsneak could not even get close to. It was a monsterous winged boar in early stages of decay but somehow still breathing and its strange curse was familiar to Aneirin: a state of living death. He was able to calm the poor Featherback boar almost immediately and inadvertantly saved Fayne's life. It took some coaxing but Fayne returned to Ralakay with a zombified boar and a ghost dragon in tow and caused half of the clan to nearly die of fright.

After they recovered from their shock (and the clan's resident zombie was equally drawn to the Featherback's plight and took him as a companion), Aneirin was welcomed into Ralakay Glen with open arms. Of course, he doesn't particularly do well around crowds but he decided to stay, glad to feel needed for once in his life. He lingers around the pin where the familiars are kept, and often tags along with Fayne and River Song in case they run into something they can't handle. While they are still slightly unnerved by Aneirin to this day -- especially River, who simply cannot wrap her head around the idea of a ghost -- they consider him to be an invaluable partner and friend.

But Aneirin has found his closest friend in a dragon who like him is afflicted by a curse. As much as he loves animals and the few dragons brave enough to actually learn his name, he tries to distance himself, knowing that they will eventually die. He has been told that the statue that guards Ralakay's main entrance is a dangerous alien predator, but he has seen her for what she is and has come to believe that she is instead a cursed dragon. She is amazingly animated around him; being a ghost he has no true eyes and therefore she is not trapped in stone when he is watching her. She cannot speak but she can write beautifully and express herself in big, over the top gestures. He gets the feeling from her that she felt as he did when he was alive. He is glad to be there for her. Not every tragic ending gets picked up again.
