Biography

Thank you for taking me in! I’m a traveler from jsquiddy’s lair! If you think it’s time for me to move on from your lair, I’d love it if you sent me back sightseeing in the Loved Ones Sightseeing with Tales thread. I can also stay at that thread’s Hostel if you don't have space for more travelers.

Uh-oh, looks like this unlucky cobalt boy wandered a little too far from his home lair (jsquiddy, #306103), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to his home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

A black and gold dragon stares at Coby, shuffling a deck of cards. Without looking, she withdraws a card.
"The fool," she says, her voice soft. He's surprised he can hear her over the sound of the other dragons at the market. "You're young and naive, and about to set off on an adventure. Watch out for those who would take advantage of your naivety."

As Coby swam away from that clan, he mulled over the dragon's words. They had been seared into his mind, a constant working that he couldn't shake. Why had it affected him like this? He shook the words away. He couldn't think about them now, he had to choose his next destination. He'd always wanted to visit the Windsinger's territory, to see if it was true how strong those currents of air really were. His wings propelled him through the water as he thought over this, eventually coming to his final decision. He cleared the water in a few swift strokes of his wings, leaving a spray of shining sea water droplets in his wake. Coby shook his drenched fur, enjoying the feel of the sun on his back as he shook himself dry. Then, he started towards the Wind Flight.

It didn't take him too long to fly over the stunted beach and into the edges of the Windsinger's domain. Coby immediately was flung to the side by the gale force winds. His wings couldn't withstand the powerful gusts coming at him from all sides. He queried in panic as he threw his wings in all directions in an attempt to gain control. Then suddenly, a shape dropped down before him, a female Tundra who spun with him, then showed him how to tilt his wings and manoeuvre to fly with the winds. It took a few tries for the dazed Tundra to get a hang of it, but when he eventually did, he felt powerful. The winds soared with him, keeping him up and aiding him in his flight. He thanked the female, whom he learned was called Rhena. Rhena led Coby back to her clan, weaving out of air pockets to keep from losing control. Many times, Coby spotted a dragon that Rhena revealed to be the clan leader performing aerial tricks about a copse of thick trees. The trees were a strange sight in the otherwise barren land. The clan itself was set in the midst of these trees, within a large dip in the landscape. As he began to descend, he took note of the odd shapes of the bamboo down the slope. The ways they twistedcand arced mimicked that of letters and symbols, a mesmerizing sight to see. Avery being introduced to the clan, Coby didn't stay long. He wanted to be on the move again, to see more new things. A few days in the clan were all he needed to ready himself for the long journey ahead. He spread his wings and took off once more.

Coby flew a while watching the landscape change below him, the water turned to darkness then turned to a lush forest. He decided to take a look around the forest so he landed next to a lake to take a break. He walked around a little and then took a nap under a tree. As the sun moved through the sky Coby slept on - unless he was woken up by the roars of a young dragon playing. He yawned, stretched, and looked around to see the young dragon trying to swim in the lake. Coby chuckled as the young snapper splashed around. Walking over to her he called out a greeting, introducing himself as a traveler from the Ice realms. The little dragon showed no fear of a stranger - she told him her name was Mona and her clan was the Caillte Baile. She said that her clan welcomed travelers from all over the world and that they would love to meet Coby.

Coby decided to follow Mona to her clan where he was greeted like an old friend. He was given food, clothes, and everyone had a smile. Coby thought this place was very nice and someplace he could spend a lot of time at. Mona invited Coby to a hut with a strange telescope coming out from the roof. This was her home which she shared with an astronomer teacher, Geras. They spent long hours talking about the sky and traveling - so long that no one noticed the sky had darkened. Coby spent the night with his new friends, he felt very relaxed and humbled by the generosity of these dragons. He spent a few days with these dragons, learning their customs and playing with Mona, but he knew that he wanted to continue traveling. With a fond farewell Coby took wing, off to see more of the world.

Confident in the fact that no ill fortune had come as of yet, he continued on his journey with confidence. It wasn't long before he found himself once again on the Windswept Plateau. There, he happened upon a clan that was working on building themselves into a port town.

Coby stayed to help with the work. He soon grew comfortable around the friendly dragons, and even settled down in his own house there for a while. A part of him wondered if his traveling days were ever truly over. As much as he loved travelling, he was growing to like the idea more and more... until he discovered the bracelet.

Everyone in Iyonda Landing knew of the black market, though most pretended it didn't exist. Coby was going for an evening walk when he stumbled across a transaction happening between Mercer, the giant leader of the black market, and one of clients. The exchange was of a highly sensitive nature, as it involved some highly illegal substance that Coby couldn't identify. Seeing that Coby had witnessed the exchange, Mercer attacked the young tundra.

In the end, Coby pleaded for his life. Mercer struck a deal, offering the life of the tundra in exchange for a future service. He strapped the bracelet to his wrist, using a spell to seal it to his body. He warned Coby not to try to take it off, and that it would glow when Mercer had a command for him. He then chased off the tundra, warning him to not stay in one place too long, or he would send the black market's assassin to finish what Mercer had started. Coby fled for his life, not even stopping by his house to pack up his possessions.

Zikul

Coby flew over trees and darkness, and he didn't stop until he was completely out of breath and rumbling down from the sky, crashing into the soft dunes of sand that outlaid the borders to the Sunbeam Ruins. Already exhausted and a tundra, it didn't take Coby long to pass out.

"... if it's some kind of curse?" the voice was significantly Fae, yet oddly emotional for one.

"Yes, but also no," a second voice, somewhere in the darkness around him spoke, this one a lot more ragged and uneven, "We have enough problems as it is, without you collecting more samples of oddities to add to them." Coby tried to look around, but found that something was covering his eyes, and that his paws had been restricted by something, possibly rope.

"Funny, coming from the dragon who collects dead bodies," remarked the Fae with what Coby assumed must be great sarcasm.

"It's not the same - this dragon's magical state might be infectious, bodies are just bodies," there was a rustle and a short hiss.

"Since when are you an expert on magic?" asked the Fae.

"I'm not. Neither are you - you're just full of yourself. Or, should I say, full of Shade," there was a chuckle and another hiss, and then someone lifted the veil from Coby's eyes. He, too, hissed, and then squinted at the light, and the two dragons who were leaning over him.

"Doesn't look hostile to me," confirmed the dark little fae, "I'd still like to bring him in. I've seen this energy pattern before..."

"Out of the question!"

"We'll have to see what the King thinks of that," muttered the fae, and started unbinding Coby's paws. Coby, who was too scared of the mentions of corpses and magical diseases, simply stared at the skydancer.

"You were having seizures," Versiaz explained and flailed an arm to illustrate, "We had to secure you so we could carry you somewhere less hot, and less light."

"Oh," Coby relaxed significantly, but that relaxation went away in an instant when the Skydancer sneered at him.

"Whatever magic tainted you, I want it nowhere near my King's clan. That bracelet thing," he nodded towards it, "I don't know what it's done to you, but you seem incapable of dying - and I suppose you'll come to learn that it's not such a nice thing, after all. My advice to you is to find someone - not us - to help you break that curse, or else, when your body dies, you might keep on going."

"Like an Emperor," chimed the Fae as he went in front again, winding the rope across his left arm. "I wanted to take a look at you, but Versiaz says no, and I have to listen to him because he's Light," he made a grimace, "I'm sorry." He added, and then took a paper from a pouch at his hip, and handed it over, "Now, this is a map made for dragons my size, so you might not be able to make it out so easily, but I marked with a cross the home of a rather apt magician just south-east from here. Place is hard to miss. I hope you can find him - and good luck."

Volrin

Coby sighed with exasperation. He had tried desperately to follow the Fae-sized map he had been given, but had ended up lost in the crumbling, maze-like structures of the Sunbeam Ruins instead. Curse his rotten luck! Given the unrelenting, blistering sun still bearing down on him, it wouldn't be long before heat stroke started to set in again. Giving up on his search for now, Coby made his way to the Hewn City (the only place in this deity-forsaken lair with some decent shade) and started to look for a populated lair to take him in.

Soon, the Tundra's attention was brought to a formidable, marble temple standing tall and bright among the otherwise dreary environment. The building was teeming with dragons, all of which seemed to be setting the temple up to serve as a new lair, while even more clan members sat peacefully around a campfire, chatting away and enjoying some lunch. It was unlikely that the magician Coby was looking for would be here, but still, it was worth a try... he was willing to do anything.

A giant, rusty-orange Snapper was the first to listen to Coby's lamenting. "Sorry dear, but there's been some kind of mistake," she said sympathetically, "you're looking for a male magician, correct? Well, our Myura's a girl, so I don't think she's the one that Fae was talking about... still, she's pretty skilled at magic, so she might be able to help you out somehow." With that, she gently ruffled the Tundra's fluffy head and led him to their campsite.

Sometime that afternoon, a Fae dressed in deep purple witch's gear came out of the temple. Imriel, the Snapper from before, eagerly rushed over to her and explained Coby's situation, and it wasn't long before the Fae (who he could only assume to be Myura) was carefully inspecting Coby's bracelet, head crest crumpling and creasing in a Fae grimace.

"This magic... it's totally foreign to me, unlike anything I've ever seen. It pulses with a violent, fervent aura." She mumbled monotonously. "I'm sorry dear, but I don't think there's anything I can do to help you."

'Of course, why not?! She's the only magician around for miles and she doesn't even know what this thing is. Just my luck!' Coby thought bitterly. Suddenly, he was snapped out of his self-pitying thoughts by Myura clearing her throat.

"Still, I know somebody who might be able to help you. She's a traveler like yourself, and she was just planning on leaving the clan later today. Maybe you could travel with her?" Myura said hopefully, and as Coby's face lit up, she continued. "Her name is Smoke, and she's a Tundra with unbelievably powerful healing and purifying magic. She's the only being I know of, other than the deities, that's capable of banishing Shade energies."

Coby nodded quite frantically, stunned to have finally caught a lucky break. Myura managed her best attempt at a reassuring smile in return. Later that day, as the stark-white Tundra named Smoke gave her hosts a fond farewell, Myura approached her reluctantly with Coby in tow.

"Smoke, this is Coby. He needs your help," Myura spoke in an urgent tone, gesturing to the blue Tundra's bracelet. "This... 'bracelet,' if I can even call it that, is endowed with powerful magic beyond even my comprehension. It's supposedly there to summon him to a captor of his in a distant clan, whenever his assistance is needed. I've no way to remove it from him, but I was hoping you could do us one last favour and bring him with you..." and with that, her head frills slicked miserably. "I'm sorry, we've already asked so much of you, but he dearly needs this thing off of him."

Smoke shook her head reassuringly, and her foggy, hawk-like Steam Gyre companion spelled "It's not a problem" in mist above her head. She beckoned Coby towards her with a slight nod of her head, and reluctantly, he padded along behind her. Hopefully Smoke would be able to help him, or at the very least, find the magician he had been directed towards.

Strukla

The two traveled for a short while, not spending the time in silence. Coby had many questions for Smoke, and often forgot to be straightfoward about them. The Gyre was limited in number of words it could present at once.

The purifying magic didn't work on the bracelet, and any forceful methods were out of the question seeing as it was seemingly permanently attached to Coby. Still, he didn't lose hope as Smoke promised to stay by his side for as long as it took to solve this problem and release him of his bond.

Their travels took them across the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and the winds blew them into the Windswept Plateau. This clan was unknown to Coby, who already traversed through the Plateau once before, and for some reason, they seemed... hostile. While the two flew above the plains, the other dragons hissed at them, tugged at their wings to stop them mid-air and, in the end, forced the two to land and introduce themselves to the leader. The two kept close to each other at all times, Smoke acting like a protective mother would around her child.

The leader was a peculiar looking one. For one, she wasn't a Wind, but a Plague-native, but that wasn't that uncommon. What disturbed Coby more were the markings all over her body and wings; the longer he stared at them, more nauseous and dizzy he felt. For a moment there, it looked as if they weren't spots at all, they were eyes and they were staring straight at him. But, a blink later, the illusion was gone. Boy, was he glad Smoke was the one that went to talk to her. Still, the strange Pearlcatcher glanced at him once while listening to Smoke's story. Coby just hoped they won't regret passing through this land.

The words would appear and disappear at great speed, it wasn't hard to follow it's flow considering half of it was hanging out there in the open, for everyone to see. There were a lot of words repeating, though, like 'together' or 'no'. Smoke would often point at him, too, and all this was making Coby even more nervous. On the other hand, her conversational partner was as blank as a fresh sheet of parchment. Finally, Smoke returned to his side and started nudging him repeatedly. 'We're leaving.' spelled the Gyre. Two dragons accompanied them without a word, by the Queen's orders.

It took this strange group just a couple of hours to reach the border. Coby crossed the invisible line without any trouble, but Smoke was stopped in her tracks by the two that followed them. "The Queen has one last message for you.", said the Skydancer. Unlike his stone-faced companion, this one seemed distressed, but only for a moment. As the wild looking Pearlcatcher suddenly jumped on Coby, knocking him down and pinning him to the ground, a silent chant came from the other one. Coby saw him taking a deep breath and blowing something similar to a sparkling dust right into Smoke's eyes. Whatever it was, it caused her to frantically try and clean her eyes with her front legs, while the sentence 'What have you done?!' kept repeating over and over.

Undisturbed, he kept on speaking in a monotone, cold voice: "You are hereby forbidden from leaving our territory, Tundra. You will cooperate with our clan, healing our members, warriors, hatchlings. You will stay with us for as long as we need your service. Only after we conclude your powers unnecessary will you be free to leave." He seemed perfectly fine with ignoring Smoke's voiceless pleas to 'undo whatever he did' for she cannot see a thing!

Coby struggled to throw this one off himself but to no avail; the Pearlcatcher was too heavy, and his claws and paws started digging into Coby's neck, slowly choking him. As his vision grew blurry, he felt something wrap around his wrist. The bracelet's ominous glow attracted his attacker's attention as well and he jumped off Coby, eyeing the tundra suspiciously while the poor guy tried gasped for air. "Jaxon! Something's wrong with this one!" While Jaxon too averted his gaze towards Coby, he failed to notice that Smoke finally managed to clear the dust from her eyes and regain her eyesight.

631.png Sitting on the bracelet, coiling around Coby's front leg, was a smaller version of a centipede-like creature, known in the Sornieth world as a Corpse Cleaner. It made characteristic clicking sound while speaking, twitching its unsightly mandibles. "Beasts... Longneck... Magician. Kilara... Remember. Kill! 5 days..." As it finished the message it was supposed to deliver, the beast disappeared, leaving behind just an ordinary looking bracelet.

It proved distraction enough for Smoke to bolt towards Coby. The harsh slam his shoulder suffered startled him and soon enough, the two could only hear loud calls coming from the guards left behind, in the Wind territory. Whose territory they ran into, they did not yet know, but this time they're not about to reveal themselves as easily to others.

Somewhere along the way, Coby picked up a robe and started introducing himself as Smoke's sibling, by their mutual agreement.

Put

Smoke and Coby padded along in silence, both still trying to fully comprehend the events that had unfolded not that long ago. Amongst their mindless walking that had seem so stretch over several days (although it felt like years), they seemed to arrive once again light territory. The clearing was bustling with hatchlings and young dragons who were being taught how to fight; being trained by a soft blue imperial

They looked at one another for a moment, their eyes translating all the words they didn't need to say.

Is it safe to approach them? Can they be trusted?

The imperial's eyes caught sight of the two tundras standing far away from the clearing, they seemed to not move an inch as he kept the thought at the back of his mind, quickly wrapping up
the training session he had to the new recruits he had been assigned to strengthen before they were sent off to serve the Lightweaver. He sent one of the younger dragons to fetch Khonor, deciding that it was best not to confront them on his own without his superior's advice or lead.

He waited patiently for his leader, washed out greens and pastel blues shimmerring off his body underneath the rays of sun as an equally pastel looking wildclaw approached him. They nodded at one another as the imperial explained the situation to the leader.

"Very well, Leon, follow me," the wildclaw spoke, casually walking towards the two dragons off in the distance.

Khonor smiled at the politely, light green eyes sparkling as the imperial stood behind him, looking equally as calm.

Coby kept quite as Smoke spoke first, "We mean no harm," her tone wasn't hostile, however it was defintely not one that could be mistaken as warm nor welcoming. It was dull and monotone, void of emotion as her eyes dully bore into the dragons before her. Coby stayed quiet, a nervous expression flashing onto his face before he shook his head in an attempt to regain his more composed looking manor.

"We are aware, but not many people pass through the Mirrorlight Promenade unless they're residents, so it is only natural that you peaked our curiosity," Khonor tried his best to sound inviting and happy-toned to the two, sensing an uneasiness in the air that he wasn't fully comfortable with. He let out a half-hearted chuckle as him and the female tundra got more acquainted, slowly walking away from Coby and Leon, leaving the two as they continued to engage in conversation.

"I don't mean to be intrusive, but what are you two doing running around Sorienth? Are you in search for answers, help, or just simply lovers of adventure?" the larger dragon spoke, genuinly curious with the antics the two seemed to be up to.

Coby stayed quiet for a moment, he had already agreed with Smoke that they would not reveal themselves easily to other dragons, but he didn't notice anything odd or menacing about the small clan that seemed to reside amongst the fallen pillars which basked in the sunlight. He began to explain everything, from the cursed bracelet to the previous encounters with the strange and violent dragons they had met before. Leon nodded in understanding and smiled lightly, "Although I don't believe we hold the company of the dragon you wish to find, I might have someone who could help you,"

Leon lead Coby through the younger dragons that litterred the area, smiling kindly to them as he passed through Khonor and Smoke who seemed to be in deep conversation until he was met with a tree that seemed to spiral around one of the few standing pillars. "I couldn't ever go up there, my size restricts me, but a great fortune teller Harley resides at the top, you should pay her a visit," he spoke quietly, quickly looking at the top of the tree before giving a solemn nod to the tundra as he whisked himself away.

"Here goes nothing," Coby said, deciding to take the short route as he flew up the definteltly larger than average tree that held a home-like structure at the top. He entered, his eyes widening as he saw magic trapped in jars and potion beakers, swirls of purple, blue and pink drifting to the ceiling, and a very angry and impatient skydancer leaping to grab them into a container.

"I must apologize for the mess, but this is what happens when you try and contain stupid, cursed thoughts. Little trouble makers they are," she huffed with annoyance as she turned to the skydancer, adjusting her guise as she approached him. "I'm Harley, I assume one of those little trouble-makers outside sent you?" she said playfully, looking out of the small hole that she deemed a window and smiling fondly.

Coby nodded, "Yes, I was told you could see people's fortunes?" he asked as he followed her to a table which was decorated with books heavy full of a transcript he could not understand, and more of the magical aura-things that had been floating around earlier. However these seemed to range in colour and were in various containers, ranging from a simple sphere to heart shaped bottles.

"Something of the sort, I can give you a rough image of your future, how you choose to interpret this or use this is not up to me," she said, her tone now deadly serious as she stared deep into his eyes.

He was shaken by the sudden change of tone in her voice, she came across as quite playful and happy a few moments ago, and she managed to turn very serious in only a matter of seconds. He nodded, showing he understood as he awaited further instructions.

"Hold this," she said, passing him an empty card, "Now close your eyes," he did as he was told as he felt an undescribable feeling on his paw, "I'm releasing some magic, don't fret," she said, almost reading his thoughts.

Coby stood still for a moment, not knowing what to think of the whole scenario, and before he could even form a thought, the card was snatched out of his hands with such urgency that his eyes snapped open in an instant.

"Glowing eyes, several of them, and a powerful dark aura. A pathway seems to be splitting off into two, both seem identical, but I am unaware of what any of this means to you," she hands him back the card, now with a fully painted image onto it as he stares confusedly at it for a moment.

"What does this mean?" he asks, slightly annoyed that she didn't do much to help or warn him for what his adventure had in store. He thought that she would be able to see things, to be able to display the future for him clearly, but all she had offered was a confusing image with little to no meaning. Before the skydancer can respond, he turned away with the card and rushed back down to where Smoke had seemed to be resting on her own.

"We'll stay here for another night, tomorrow we have to continue our search, I've been told there's a path North to here that could get us closer to the dragon you need," she said with a smile.

His eyes widened as he looked towards the card. Smoke seemed to be at ease, finally, and he decided that it would be for the best that he did not show it to her yet. He hid it within his cloak as he nodded, settling down beside her and hoping that everything would go well for the two.
