______ Crisp, cool air wafted around Amir. He inhaled the sweet scent of nature as he settled back into his throne, trading bored glances with his two brothers. Another long, stifling day of sitting up straight, dining on sweet cinnamon delicacies, watching his parents deal with the court. Amir shifted as an itch formed on his back. No fidgeting. The fiddle his youngest brother enchanted during lessons now played a familiar mourning song, as it was wont to do. No matter how hard Amr tried, the fiddle would just not play anything else. Amir gave it a hateful glance. Wretched thing.

He watched as an old crone approached the throne. She looked close to falling over as she bowed to the royal family. When she straightened, Amir noticed her eyes were rheumy and unfocused, yet held her head with a clear quality to it like that of a rushing brook. Amir shifted, watching to see what she would request. She opened her mouth and spoke words unfamiliar to the young prince. His heartbeat hammered as his family exchanged bemused looks, the expression frozen on their faces as they stilled.

Amir whipped his head around. The court had fallen into a unnatural stillness. Only one sound intruded--the fiddle kept playing. There was no rustle of clothes, no sniff of a stuffy nose. Amir looked toward the crone again and found she stared directly at him. Her eyes were startlingly clear, a crystal blue that chilled his blood. He wasn’t affected by whatever curse she had bestowed upon the throne room, and yet he found he could not make his body move to flee or shake her until she freed his court.

______ The crone turned to leave. Amir burst into motion, calling after her. But she reached the door before he did, and once she crossed the threshold, she disappeared. Amir whirled around, peering at the line of subjects still waiting to air their grievances to the king and queen. They were frozen as well, caught in mid-gossip. Amir bolted down the hall, past frozen guards and servants alike. He burst out of the castle, flying towards the gardens. They had been enchanted to grow spring flowers, a shock of season in the autumn court. The people there were still as well.

Amir sank to the ground, hands buried in the soft green grass. His breath came in great heaves, sucking down warm perfumed air. His lungs shuddered on a sob, and he didn’t bother to stop the angry tears flowing down his face. He wrenched the leafy circlet off his head and threw it into a bush. The fiddle’s lonely song floated to him from an open window in the castle. One of the garden guardians, a little purple faerie, floated down to him. Amir stroked its soft down fur with a finger. It wouldn’t do to rule a still kingdom. He had to find the crone and save his kingdom. He wiped his eyes and gathered himself.

He left his finery behind, donning an old hat and cloak of Anir’s. He packed an empty journal. He would need to record his adventures to stay sane. Amir looked up from his hurrying to find the fiddle in front of him. The faerie from the garden sat on a nearby table, on its way to sleep. He himself was not adept at magic, but he could defend himself with it well enough. He enchanted the cloak to provide warmth and stealth. He settled the sleeping faerie on his shoulder and left his rooms, shutting the horrible fiddle inside. Amir left the castle, peering up at it one last time for however long. He turned back around and there was the fiddle, giving him a big enough fright to stir the faerie. There’d be no way to rid himself of the thing, so he just marched past it, away from the safety of his kingdom.

Travel Logs:

This place is strange, a clan of warriors live in this unforgiving land full of infection and decay. They are brutal, fierce but to each other they are like family. The lazy ones are tolerated to so extent. They have some sort of job they are assigned to but the lackadaisical gatherers seem to have the easiest time of it. Those that are not out hunting have warriors to keep them safe as they pick berries and what ever. It seems to work for them and they all seem to exist peacefully in this huge clan. The clan leader, she is a little hard to read. Her cruelty to her enemies is remarkable. She comes off as cold and uncaring, yet watching her she has maternal, gentler side too it seems. As much as I would like to stay here longer I don't think that I should. The vaccines given to me to protect me from the plague illnesses are not taking, soon exposure here will become hazardous to me. I must move on that is, after my children hatch. Ahem, well yes I forgot to mention that little detail.

My next stop was by the Lightning flight. I landed somewhere in their domain's dunes, then wandered. I met a
red skydancer
named Novinea. She seemed charmed by me immediately and gladly led me away from the dull, sandy plains to a decently-sized clan mostly situated in a large crevice dug out of a cliff. I was greeted by their leader and allowed to stay for as long as I needed. Novinea kept me fed, and it seemed as if she might have been smitten by me.

Update: I've had a nest with her. The hatchlings were raised, then sent off on their own adventures. That is at least what Novinea told me. Nevertheless, I've lingered too long. On my way I go.

I caught a ship heading for the Southern Icefields. They gave me passage to their final destination - a clan located as far south as south goes, Valhall. I've been told this was one of the first trips anyone took this far with ship, as their docks are quite new and only recently built.

It was quite the climb from the water and up to the lair, a winding passage dug into the steep cliffs of ice. The scenery here is beautiful, but the chill is painful. I can barely feel my wings on a good day, but thankfully there's a warm Inn to stay at and they have numerous shops offering furs and enchanted items to keep oneself warm.

I'll be joining a small group of fellow traveler tonight, to go out and see the Auroras in the sky. After that, I will probably move on - I can't stay forever, I just don't have time. The journey here took so long and I imagine leaving will take just as long, but this was certainly a place I will always remember - such beauty, such friendly dragons and such peace. Maybe I'll return, one day, if I ever need to calm my mind and relax my soul. There's surely no place better for it.

I've wandered quite far, and have found myself somewhere within the Starwood Strand, the dragons here are friendly for the most part. Diverse individuals, but a welcoming community. Their leader, Kain is an odd one, rather friendly and caring for a Mirror.
It's rather memorizing here, I'll have to be on my way soon. Or else I may get lost in the beauty of this place and the secrets it holds.
