Biography

Sapling
Captain of the Guard, Heir of the Threshold Oak
- male - he/him pronouns -

Sapling has all the ferocity typical of his breed, but tempers it with the patience and dedication of a Guardian. He is the son of Rootbound, one of the first dragons to join the Citadel clan. She was a strong fighter, who gathered allies to brave the coliseum, and was granted the title, “captain of the guard.” Among her first trainees for a proper guard to the young clan was her son.

Though sometimes frustrated that he was being raised to help protect his mother's charge, he did enjoy battle, and his close friendships with many of his clan-mates kept him satisfied. Sprout, a talented young healer, was especially welcome company. Then, it seemed that the guard's work would become easier—the nearest Serthis clan, which had long resisted diplomatic overtures, agreed to meet.

The one doubt was that the clan seer, Wavecrest, declined to offer any prediction on the meeting's outcome. Rootbound was loathe to stray from the gates of her charge, but in light of this uncertainty, she accompanied the diplomatic party. By her great sacrifice, all others returned safely. But Sapling waited at the gates for his mother's return in vain—she had fallen.

For days, he was inconsolable—not outwardly grieving, just lost. In his own home, the territory he had known all his life, he was lost without his mother standing guard at the threshold. The clan planted an oak there in her honor, but Sapling wandered, looking for something he knew he wouldn't find.

Then he found it. A tiny hatchling, a mirror covered in dust and ash, lost and hungry. He took her back to the clan, called her his sister, and named her Ashbound. She reminded him that he had a duty to his clan, to the dragons his mother had protected as ardently as her charge.

He took up the mantle of captain, and did his best to be as strong and as good a leader as his mother. But a mirror is not a guardian, no matter how hard he tries. The guard was bound to be a little different under his command; now, though he and Ashbound are the only mirrors, they are essentially a pack. The wildclaws have adapted especially well.

The fae has some trouble keeping up, but Sapling has never minded if she catches a ride.
