► HISTORY
Like many Runecatchers, Origenes was born and raised in the Runecatcher Facility. His abilities manifested soon after his birth, and over the next few years, his parents and other researchers studied them to discern their effects. Origenes' early life was not as terrible as the words "facility" and "test subject" might imply. He was well cared-for and provided with opportunities to practice his magic. By the time he was allowed to leave the Facility unsupervised, he had gained more control over his magic and could be relied on to use it well.
The world was a deeply fascinating place, but Origenes found himself mostly drawn to tales and artifacts from history, especially mysterious civilizations said to have thrived during the Second Age. He often charmed various dragons into taking him on archeological digs, or else he would go exploring on his own. It was while in the Shifting Expanse that he heard rumors of an ancient king's tomb that'd been uncovered by an earthquake. He hired a group of Serthis to guide him into the tomb -- and found himself targeted by the long-dead king's curse.
Origenes was abandoned by his guides and gravely injured when he tried to escape. He lay in the darkness for a time, listening to the spirit taunting him. As it did, strange images welled up in his mind. Impressions...perhaps memories? He inched closer to death -- and also to the discovery of another life he'd had in another body, another time.
He was soon rescued by the traveling Guardian, Ashes. They fled the tomb together, and Origenes recuperated in the Disillusionists' lair. Despite his near-death experience, his interest in history hadn't been dampened; on the contrary, it was stronger than ever. The idea that he might have been a part of those ancient civilizations intrigued him, and it wasn't long before he gallivanted off into the world again.
Origenes returns to the lair from time to time to rest, pick up supplies, and catalogue his findings. He continues to make friends around Sornieth and will also visit them to exchange knowledge with them. The majority of his days, however, are spent out in the wilderness, chasing rumors and tales of those long-buried lands from the past.
► CHARACTER A bright-eyed, eager explorer. One might expect Origenes to have a keen scientific mind, given that he came from a facility and was encouraged to assist in research as a child. In his case, however, he seems to have become exhausted by the rigorous scientific method of formulating hypotheses, conducting controlled experiments, and then creating detailed reports of the results. He now prefers to just believe things and investigate them as they come (though he tries to maintain healthy amounts of skepticism and caution). Many of his expeditions hit dead ends, but he tries not to let that bother him. He's encountered wonder and strangeness before, after all; he can afford to maintain his optimism a lot longer than others can. His enthusiasm makes him seem much younger than he really is. He is still quite naïve, but is learning not to let himself get scammed by anybody who might take advantage of him. His Runecatcher abilities make him unusually charismatic, and he's not above using this to charm other beings into aiding him. His dealings are always strictly legal, though, and he'd never resort to anything underhanded. He's not as sly as others might surmise from his speech. He genuinely likes other people, and after enticing them into his confidence, he often finds himself genuinely caring about them. This can be an inconvenience, but more often than not, he finishes an expedition with more friends than he initially had. He also remains perpetually on the lookout for like-minded explorers, archeologists, and historians. Whenever he's in their neighborhood, he'll visit them if he can. His two constant companions aren't very talkative, and out in the wilderness, he doesn't have many other people to converse with. So when he does find someone else, he will talk his head off. He also enjoys picking up random knickknacks and artifacts -- not uncommon for him to return to the lair with a sack full of dubious-looking trash. A few of the pieces are genuinely interesting and will either remain in the lair or get donated to archeological institutions, but the majority are really just junk. It's just that the clan doesn't have the heart to throw them out. Origenes knows it's junk, and he knows that his clanmates know, and he appreciates this effort on their part. The knowledge that he's the reincarnation of a long-lost king, fortunately, hasn't gone to his head. The only sign of it is his apparel: his outfits are always just a bit too dramatic, with capes and crowns and such. People often expect a tough-talking con man and sort of snicker when he opens his mouth and starts chattering. He doesn't mind; it's important to put others at ease. The exception to the frivolity is his mantle, which is actually a thin sheet of magically-treated leather. Origenes has a tendency to attract lightning due to his magic. He uses the mantle to protect himself from most of the damage. In addition to the abilities outlined in his Runecatcher notes, he can use his magic to manipulate certain minerals: a favorite trick is to use sand to form models of whatever he's thinking about. Probably just as well he prefers roaming around in the wilderness -- with his constant enthusiasm, his magic would probably be batting about and exploding various machines.

► RELATIONSHIPS
Zubeida | Teammate Hired as a scout, Zubeida eventually elected to continue traveling with Origenes, not just because of the pay but because she found his trips and objectives interesting. She serves as the team's scout, but can also fight with several weapons, including a set of bolas. Jaded and outspoken, her pragmatism often wins through whenever Origenes is about to get overwhelmed by enthusiasm. |
► STATS & ABILITIES
Origenes carries small, almost inconsequential weapons, but dislikes having to use them. He prefers to employ his magic instead, using it to deflect enemies' weapons or launch projectiles at them. He can also use it to raise a screen of sand as a distraction. He must exercise caution, however. If he isn't careful, his magic can actually attract weapons and Lightning attacks, and he is not immune to these. He can also use it to interfere with hostile spells, but might find himself overwhelmed if the opposing magician or spell is stronger than he is. _______________________________________ |
He survived for nearly two days after getting impaled by a sword, so it's safe to say he has a great deal of strength. Indeed, he remains healthy, and while caught up in the excitement of exploring, won't even notice if he's sick. His energy never seems to flag, and sometimes his teammates find it exhausting to keep up with him. _______________________________________ |
If not for the fact that his magic is closely tied to his emotions, Origenes would be a very powerful and deadly mage. As things stand, however, his magic tends to go haywire whenever he's excited (or more excited than usual). He has been known to damage machines and cause disruptions in other dragons' spells, often unwillingly. _______________________________________ |
Origenes has amassed plenty of knowledge on history and archeology and can chat about these for hours. He isn't too interested in learning about other things, though. He'll study different fields, but only if they'll make his explorations easier, e.g. learning Serthis customs so that he can hire them as guides. _______________________________________ |
A charming, friendly dragon. His cheerfulness wins him plenty of friends no matter where he is. People are initially drawn to him because of his magnetism, and while some of them may become bored with his endless chatter about long-lost cities and temples, many find themselves staying on as friends because of how warm he is. _______________________________________ |
Origenes' lifestyle might be considered hazardous at times, but barring that one encounter with the cursed tomb, he hasn't really had anything bad happen to him. His expeditions often seem to end inconclusively, with him returning empty-handed, but he and his teammates remain alive, and that's what really counts. _______________________________________ |
