Val was nothing special as a hatchling. He wasn't the strongest, the bravest, or the smartest. Over all, he wasn't a note worthy addition to his home in the Light Flight. His older siblings were all remarkable warriors, hunters, and scholars as soon as they began studying. Most would think growing up like this would have made Val bitter and jealous, but it was quite the contrary. No one ever expected anything from the Pearlcatcher, so he was left to his own devices for the most part. If anything he pitied his siblings. Someone was always hovering over them to make sure they did everything right. No, Val would take his freedom any day of the week. However, Val's fun ceased as he grew up. His siblings, who had been raised under strict codes, all had a place. Val didn't. In the beginning he thought this meant he wouldn't be given any responsibility, and would continue doing whatever he wanted. Over time he learned this to be false. They where going to exalt him. Even his own mother didn't fight. Scared for his freedom, he ran far from his home, almost to the Shadow Flight border. Only his fear of the shaded woods kept him from continuing on now. He remained in isolation near the boarder for 2 months. When his clan came to look for him, he would hide in the ruins until they left. By the end of the second week, his clan stopped looking. His time in isolation wasn't easy. Val took up residence in the ruins he had hidden in when his clan had come looking for him. He had no skills in hunting bugs, and every plant he ate was a gamble as to whether or not it would kill him. The only thing that kept him alive was the bundle of Black Tulips he found next to him every morning. He didn't know who kept leaving them, but that didn't make him any less grateful to them. He didn't remain in the dark for long however. After months of hiding out in the ruins, he began to hear voices in the night. At first they where inaudible, but over time they grew closer, their low rasp lulling him to sleep each night with tails off loss, betray, and how power could fix it all. As Val became more acquainted with the tales, he felt something change within him. Tasks that before where so difficult became simple, and he found that the idle life he had been running to no longer pleased him. It was then he realized he should go home, after all, he wasn't the same little Pearlcatcher from his childhood. Now he had no reason to fear being exalted, or so the voices told him. When he reached his home he was welcomed by his family and friends with only a few worried questions to deal with. He spoke words he had never even thought could roll off his tongue, and his clan was pacified by them, if not a little shocked at his new attitude. Before his leader even had a chance to question him, Val inserted himself into a hunting group. In the beginning they thought, "Hey, he's just going to mess this trip up." But boy where they ever wrong. The dragon in charge of the hunt was Simga, one of Val's brothers. Even on his first hunt Simga had shown promise. However, when one of the younger dragons set off a stampede, the 'perfect' hunter had no idea what to do. Simga may have been a prodigy, but he lacked experience. This was when Val surprised everyone. Rather than run like most of his clan, he organized the frighted dragons and ended the hunt in one quick play. To say the least his clan was stunned to silence at Val's actions. The leader, Maya, praised him for his quick wit and new found skill. She uttered no word of being an exalt, rather she made requests of him. Whatever she asked, Val rushed to accomplish them. He won any fight, outsmarted any prey, and recalled trivia he'd never heard before as if it where nothing. Though it was after a certain battle with his brother, Duck, that the others began to become weary of the docile dragon they once knew. Although Val himself didn't remember the conflict, from what others have told him, he had tried to rip the elder Bogsneak apart even after he was begging for mercy. It had taken four of his clanmates to remove him. After the battle he stayed in his den and tried to find out why he did that to his own brother, though he would always reason out the same answers: "He deserved it.", "He shouldn't have challenged you.", and the ever popular "Why should you care?" After a few days his clan began to worry for the sanity of the Pearlcathcer, as he could often be heard talking to himself at any time of day. Despite their clans reservations, Simga and the now recovered Duck set off for The Tangled Woods, for they feared their brother may have contracted something from the Shadow Flight's lands. The relationship between the flights had always been hit or miss, so the brothers sought out one of the few clans not lead by a shadow dragon. Although most of the clan was not pleased with the newcomers, Silvereye welcomed them. She listened to their tale and asked questions where they where needed. When they mentioned the ruins Silvereye grew concerned. The ruins on the boarder of the Shadow and Light territory had been the sight of many bloody battles over they years. "Boys, I do not wish to alarm you, but be careful of your brother. He may not be the same dragon he once was." She went on to explain that because of the spirits who resided there's influence on the Pearlcatcher's mind, it was probably not a good idea to allow him to keep living in the Light Flight, seeing as though his personality was being altered to better suit that of the Shadow Flight members. Frightened for their sibling's wellbeing, the two brothers returned to their home and explained to their family, including Val, the situation. Val was surprisingly eager to leave, probably because the spirits who were influencing him were wanting to return to their homeland, and so with that, he packed up his things and left his former family behind to live with his new brethren; Silvereye's Clan. |
