Storm Witch

"The eye of the storm is not as calm as it seems."

When Masika was born, the sky trembled.

It was not because of her, of course. She hatched in the middle of a tempest, and her first glimpse of the world was a churning sky and forks of lightning fit to scorch the earth until the ends of time. Gnarled glass sprouted all around her, beautiful evidence of the storm's violence, and when she looked her parents in the eye, she saw pride. Masika was fortuitous, and the dark clouds above promised great power.

Then the lightning struck, killing her.

She took three days to return, three days in which her parents grieved for their daughter, slaughtered in the storm that seemed to herald immeasurable strength. Perhaps, her parents thought, the storm was displaying its own might, putting the miserable creatures of the Shifting Expanse back in their place. But then she came back, and all their worries were cast aside.

Heralded as a miracle, Masika was thrust into the role of storm witch immediately. A symbol of good fortune and raw power to the local clans, her mere appearance could stall threats of violence, quelling rebellion by virtue of being the higher power, the blessed daughter. She reveled in her influence at first, delighted with the sway she held. She was nearly on par with the gods, and whole clans kneeled before her in reverence.

But she was also lonely, the untouchable child of the storm. So she fled.

Pleas for her return went far and wide, but Masika traveled by tempest, impossible to reach unless one was a witch of similar caliber. She wanted freedom from the sands and clans that roamed the dunes, wanted freedom from her pedestal and her duties. She wanted freedom to let the storm pass.

Eventually, her travels wore her out. Still young, not yet proficient in manipulating such a great force of nature, she came to rest in the Tangled Wood, where she found Nyx Coven and its myriad of witches.

Since then, the coven has been her home. The dragons here understand the burden of great magic, and while they exercise their skills regularly, they do so without restraint, under no obligation to anyone but themselves, though many choose to benefit others with their gifts. Masika has grown accustomed to this arrangement, and while no one asks her to curry favor with the storms anymore, she does summon bursts of rain now and again to bring renewal to the earth. The genuine gratitude the coven expresses for these showers keeps her tied down; in any other lifetime, even as simple an act as this would be demanded of her, a thought she cannot bear.

Thunder ricochets through her veins. It should have never been restrained.
