Biography
Magina the Anti-Mage magic thyself out of that Theme: Children of the Sun |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ček sat down to write, his heart aching even though it was all over now. He wished he had better news for his aunt about her daughter. Dear Lunai. He decided to begin with the best positive he could conjure: Magina is alive. Concealed from the sun for ages, only torchlight passed the bars of Magina’s prison. Her hands scarred and claws chipped and scratched from mining rune-making gems for her captors. They destroyed her home and her mentors, subjected her to strange rites and grueling work. Even her ability to breathe the slightest flame was gone. The only thing they hadn’t taken was Magina’s will. Medic came beside him, her hand resting gently on his, pausing his writing. “She’ll be fine, Ček.” Her smile was bracing, though not entirely confident. “She may even recover.” Ček looked back at his note. “I’m not going to tell her that when there’s no reason to believe it.” Before Medic could respond, the Ridgeback stirred on her pallet. Medic had put a lot of work into healing her wounds, hiding her pain with Shadow charms. For a moment, it was as though they both held their breath, waiting for her to say something. Finally, Magina croaked, “Where am I?” Ček went to her side. “With the Tempest Chase. The Annex Talonok flock is routed.” Despite his attempts at positivity, there was no cheering way to tell a Fire dragon she could no longer control a flame. “You must have very strong magic to have survived all this time.” Magina shook her head and turned away. “It was not magic on my side,” she said, her voice strong despite the shocking blow it must have been to know what she’d lost. “But purity of will.” |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
When monks from the nearby volcano came to her clan to recruit dragons to learn the ways of Fire, Magina went. It was a peaceful existence for several years, as she learned how the world kept itself warm and about the Flamecaller and the magic keeping the world in balance. It should have been as such forever, but everything changed one day when the volcano sat dormant and smoking. A clan of mercenary dragons, hired from the Tsunami Flats, destroyed the monastery, the volcano, and nearly all the dragons there. Magina survived, but only to be used for labor and strange rituals that robbed her of her Fiery birthright. She scraped by as a prisoner for untold weeks until her cousin, Cek, and his band of monster hunters rescued her and took her under their wings. Magic is now an insult to Magina. Even though she once held the gods in high regard and saw magic as the glue that held the world in one piece, she now sees it only as a tool of chaos and a method of destruction. She had many facts on her side: magic is used to wage wars, magic’s interaction with life attracts the Shade. Magic has taken more life than it has given, and is a gift that dragons do not deserve. Like a skittering mana thief feeding off magical energy, Magina sees herself as a tool of balance to take back what dragons use so freely for destruction. Seen as a fanatic by her colleagues in the Tempest Chase, nobody can deny her fighting ability is near peerless. Still, her methods might cause undue harm to magic-users in her vicinity whether friend or foe. She remains useful against magic-wielding beasts and dragons. When she is at her most powerful, Magina has been known to destroy enough magical energy to kill a full-grown dragon. Fire is hot and uncontrollable, something like Magina. However, Magina is now unable to use her birthright ability of Fire breath. Instead, she somehow saps the breath from other creatures and dragons, making their magical attacks weak or simply ineffective. Like Fire consumes oxygen, Magina consumes magic. Every dragon in the Chase pities her unfortunate past, while only the casting dragons recognize her for the danger she truly is. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Imps like Riki usually give travelers trouble as they go along the shoreline of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the Ashfall Wastes. Magina befriended the little imp primarily because he made skillful use of his environment to avoid the use of magic, keeping a pouch of dust with him that made it impossible for his enemies to use magic effectively. Clearly, the two should be friends. The rest of the Chase finds Riki impossible, however nobody wants to anger both Magina and Riki at the same time. |
━━ family ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
When Magina disappeared without a trace, her mother, Lunai, contacted her nephew, Ček, to go find her. Magina might have been grateful, if she’d been in any state to be anything at all at the time. After Ček’s mate, Medic, nursed her back to health (as much as she was able), Magina decided to stay with Ček’s clan as a hunter. Even though they are cousins, Ček is closer in age to Magina’s mother than he is to her age, and so their relationship is rather more that of father/daughter than cousins. Magina enjoys taking her meals with the two of them when she happens to be at camp. |
Magina’s torment turned out to have some use when another member of the Chase, Skjold, came to her with a problem a quite similar to her own. Like Magina, his son Chenek was unable to use the magical energy building in his body. Unlike Magina, Chenek’s ability to pull energy doubled or tripled that of an adult dragon, though he was quite small. Bit by bit, Magina siphoned energy to return Chenek to normal levels and save his life. Though he will never be able to use magic, and may still very well die without Magina’s help, she’s happy to know there is at least one other dragon out there who sees her gift as life-giving rather than taking. |
━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Along with her ability to break and completely destroy magical energy stores, Magina is highly resistant to magic. Her curse does come with its upsides. » » Magina is quite the gambler, such that she almost never has any treasure on her more than a few days after getting paid. » » Since she is large and strong, Magina is often hired to bolster other clans’ numbers in wartime. She got a particularly nasty scar that covers her left side from her head to her shoulder and her wing from a territory war between a Fire and Lightning clan. » » Despite her huge bulk, Magina is very fast. Dragons have sworn that they’ve seen her move from their sight between one blink and another. » » Magina’s surname used to be Battlefury, chosen when she was a young Ridgeback with her sights set on becoming a warrior. A warrior she has become, but she’s settled on the surname Spellshield. |
aesthetic: Magina wears the vest and headband of the monks she once trained with, and is otherwise very frugal. She collects shed spines to turn into scythes. |
likes: payday, games of skill or chance, alcohol, other magically-stunted dragons dislikes: magic, paperwork, dragons that trust magic too much _________________________________________________________ |
