C I P H E R
THE PEACE MAKER

ROMANTIC INTEREST

╰━━━━━━━━╯

He was named after a demon and while the dark magic that controlled his parents also flowed through his veins, Cipher could never live up to his namesake. He harbored power and the potential for violence, but he desired only peace. Cipher's father and brother would often mock him. They would try and make him fight; to become the warrior he was destined to be, but the golden hatchling never reacted to their threats. Instead, Cipher preferred to spend his time absorbed in books. The young Imperial would sneak away during the earliest hours of dawn and climb out onto the limestone cliffs surrounding the Cathedral where he was born. It was then that the first rays of sunlight pierced through the thick blanket of fog and illuminated the land. He could see for miles out over the open ocean and he imagined that all the wondrous, fantastic places he read about in books were out there, somewhere beyond the sea.

Then something changed. The first time it happened, Cipher woke up covered in blood with tatters of flesh and torn shards of scales still stuck under his curved claws. He couldn’t remember, but the approving look plastered on his father’s face told him everything he needed to know. After that, the blackouts began occurring more frequently and Cipher would regain consciousness wondering how severely he had injured whatever it was. . whoever it was that he’d been fighting. What worried him the most was that he always awoke without a single scrape on his own golden hide.

Cipher left the Cathedral after he awoke from a blackout to his brother’s pained cries. His sibling wasn’t moving, the marble floor around him slick with a pool of blood and several shattered fragments of bone protruded through his skin. Cipher's mother had also sustained damage in the form of several deep lacerations along her sides after she stepped in to diffuse the fight. It was the first time Cipher saw what he was capable of and it made him afraid. Would his brother even survive? If that was what he had done to his own family, Cipher dreaded what had become of the dragons he fought previously.

Cipher left the Cathedral of Eyes determined to find a dragon who was stronger than he was, who could prevent him from harming anyone else. The golden dragon traveled for months with no such luck. He regained consciousness after each fight to hear the cries of powerful warlords or seasoned mages crippled on the ground before him and with each failed attempt to control himself, Cipher became more and more afraid. Finally, he decided to isolate himself in a cave deep within the Foxfire Brambles, but even here he didn’t remain completely alone.

The dragon who found Cipher was a Skydancer called Kaixuan who had heard rumors of a powerful demon wandering the land. He came to vanquish the foul creature, but instead he found Cipher backing away from him, refusing to fight. “I don’t want to hurt you, but I can’t control it” the golden dragon said. The Skydancer was so much smaller than he was and Cipher could only imagine how easy it would be to snap the other dragon’s delicate wings and legs, to pull the soft feathers and fur from his body. But Kaixuan was unafraid. “Don’t worry,” the Skydancer spoke, “you won’t land a scratch on me” and Cipher lost control.

The Imperial awoke sore and unable to move, thick brambles wrapped around his form. Then he saw Kaixuan standing in the clearing in front of him, unscathed and smiling at the golden dragon. “I told you so,” he said with a grin. “B-but how?” Cipher managed to stutter. “Let’s just say that there’s an art to every battle, you don’t necessarily need to be the strongest to win a fight.”

After that, the Skydancer invited Cipher to travel with him and the golden Imperial drew comfort from the idea that there was finally a dragon who could prevent him from injuring others. As Cipher became less afraid and began exploring and learning to use his abilities, he lost control of himself less and less. He grew close to Kaixuan and he finally read the one book that he had avoided previously because of its title. The Art of War.

Now Cipher serves as a mediator who negotiates peace treaties and prevents battles before they start. Many dragons call him the ‘Peace Maker’ for there are few tensions that he can’t remedy before they escalate to violence. Still, Cipher lives by the sea and during the early dawn he climbs out onto the crystalline peaks surrounding the Arcanist’s Observatory. He watches as first rays of sunlight illuminate the land, but now he’s not alone. There’s a Skydancer who sits next to him, reading aloud passages from their shared favorite book.
