This story is a bit dated and will be getting fixed/cleaned up eventually!

Part I: Flight

Even among spirals, Ya had always been incredibly active and impatient, always wanting to flitter about his clan, leaving no dragon unbothered by his presence, snooping into everything, disrupting every possible moment, and then leaving just as soon as he was distracted by yet another opportunity for mischief. Perhaps that was even the reason his name was so short; who would want to take the time to pronounce that wildclaw Ralvurahva’s name, or Dheginsea, or Zetsubou? Ya was such a gloriously direct name, lacking those hindering syllables that almost seemed like a detour to the idea it was meant to convey. So very fitting, then, was “Ya” – a name that screamed “me!” without any of that long-winded nonsense.

All was right within his little world when he was, of course, the cynosure. But more often than not, the others within the clan tried their best to ignore his playful antics, or responded with abrupt, clipped replies when he spoke to them, for reasons Ya could not fathom. He seethed with jealousy the day he found out how those “brave” clan members ventured into the wilder parts of the land, bringing back all sorts of treasures and trinkets, and winning favor for their gracious goddess for those that left to serve underneath her wings. And so for days, Ya planned out his next move: he would prove to everyone that he held just as much fortitude—more even, than any other. He would be the one to bring glory to his clan, and do it in style to boot!

The iridescent spiral took to the sky to set in motion his scheming, feeling the wind beneath his six wings, and looped around in the circular motion for which his breed was named. Silently, the currents of the air bent to his will as he shaped himself in his flight, rising ever higher, gaining altitude with each and every swirl that propelled him upwards. With a smug sense of determination, he glided towards the direction of the mire—for was it not known as an area full of dangers and difficulty? What better way to show everyone just what he could achieve with his lithe body and quick mannerisms!

However, as it turned out, the mire... wasn’t as close to home as he had originally thought. Ya squinted at the terrain, trying to see where it was that he was supposed to be going, noticing the sky darkening ever so slightly, and wondering if evening had begun to descend. How long had he been flying at this point? Frustrated at the idea that other dragons could potentially arrive at this destination much faster, having known the way already, or with the guidance of those who did know, he picked up his pace, not wanting to reach the swamp at an embarrassingly failworthy record. The air rushed by his skin and wings much more quickly now—perhaps just a little too quickly, cutting by him quite rapidly. Was it simply his newfound speed? Or was something else brewing?

Howling, the winds around him seemed to grow even more restless, writhing around his form with far less control than before. Ya shifted his weight, attempting to balance it across his elongated anatomy, as the air moved swiftly, almost aggressively, with the intention of knocking Ya off his aim and pattern. He could feel the change in his environment – after all, he was born for the skies – how could he not realize a storm was growing ahead?

“If I turn back now, I’ll be the laughing stock of the clan,” he muttered to himself, forcing his wings to fight against the battering winds. They began to ache with the strain of exertion, screaming in protest, and Ya began to wish he was back home, in the safety of the lair, where it was warm and comfortable and—

CRASH.

A noise of earshattering proportions ripped him out of his thoughts unexpectedly, and he jolted sideways, startled and a little shocked. Turning his head, his eyes flickered over his surroundings, attempting to locate the source of the noise. A flash of light suddenly penetrated the now-dark sky, followed belatedly by another thunderous crash – lightning, of course. Ya had found himself in the middle of the storm, continuously disoriented by the thunder, as it rumbled loudly in all directions. Lightning seemed to simply lash out at random, and it was growing so dark that Ya feared he would not be able to navigate out of its path in time to get back to the clan.

With fatigued wings, he tried to combat the storm, only to find it increasing in strength as his own waned like a receding ocean’s tide. Ya attempted to fly lower, distancing himself from the clouds that carried their deadly electricity, only to be smacked by a heavy gust of wind that sent him reeling downwards uncontrollably. Just as he attempted to right himself, another object—this time quite a bit more solid than the wind—collided with him, the encounter accompanied by a snapping sound and a cold shiver of shock throughout his limbs.

Then the pain swelled up through one of his wings, like fiery talons scraping through his muscles, and in a panic, Ya flapped around wildly, to no avail, his left backwing hanging limply at his side. Lacking the symmetry that was necessary for flight, he began to free-fall, the air’s friction eating at his raw skin, his remaining wings doing very little to break his rapid descent. Other objects—he knew not what, for he could hardly see—hit him as he fell—hard, roughly textured obstacles, and then others that were smaller, thin, but whiplike, leaving burning sensations where they touched his skin, and finally an impact so concrete, he lost consciousness altogether, jerked into darkness.

Part II: Crashlanding

When Ya awoke, it was slowly, to a cold, unforgiving atmosphere. As he cracked open his eyes, he saw a dense fog had permeated the area, obscuring his vision, already impaired by the immense headache springing up in his temples. Trees and murky water dominated the terrain, with patches of foliage-heavy land here and there, such as the bit he had crashlanded on. Great limbs from the trees lay around his form, broken and shattered into pieces on the damp ground. A cursory glance upward revealed that his growing theory was correct: apparently, he had fallen straight into this group of trees on his way down, and certainly had the cuts and bruises from it.

As he tried to move, he gasped, finding that what body parts of him that weren’t hurting were sore and stiff and cold instead. The one wing was ruined beyond use in its current state, and he was hungry, incredibly hungry. Deciding it might be a good idea to at least find some food, in the hopes of restoring some of his energy, Ya crawled about on the wet soil and through the thick plantation, unused to being grounded, as it were, and wincing with every step he managed. Suddenly, he slipped on the soft leaves, scrambling to regain his balance, but falling into the muddy waters instead, his normally sheen hide now stained with the filth of the swamp.

Absolutely disgusted—and more than a little uncomfortable with the chilling temperature of the water itself—Ya launched an effort to get back out of the water, his talons and wings getting stuck in the slush and muck of the wet clay. Finally managing to at least get his talons onto something more firm and sturdy, he pulled his shaking, soaked body up onto the land, collapsing in exhaustion and wishing fervently that he was back at home in the lair, dry, and cozy, and in the company of his fellow dragonkin.

Why had he ever thought this fool’s errand was a good idea? What training did he even have, and what would he do if a real monster suddenly sprang itself upon him? Perhaps it was just his luck that nothing seemed to have spotted him yet. In his weakened state, there would be no way of defending himself, and he would make for easy prey. He stifled a strangled cry of desperation, trying not to attract unwanted attention – for once – and turned his focus toward the water, glancing down at the melancholy liquid.

Something there caught his eye, then – a fleeting glimmering shimmer beneath the brown surface. Confused, Ya stared at it a moment more, wondering what it could be, when he saw it near the surface again, shining scales a bright contrast to its surroundings. Fascinated, he observed the strange little fish, swimming in circles and dancing in the water like a mirror to his movements in the air. Of course, the enchantment of its golden beauty wore off quickly as his need to feed took over, and clumsily, he made a lunge for it, trying to catch it in his jaws or his talons.

Ya succeeded at neither of these things, failing miserably as he flailed around in the water ungracefully, unable to catch the quick little creature that seemed to stay just out of his reach. Giving up, and too tired to continue, the spiral dragged himself back to the patch of land he had been on, curling up unhappily, and glaring in the direction of the eel. It swam closer, curiously, until it reached the bank that he lay upon, and then reared up, its head sticking out of the water as it glanced directly at Ya.

“What do you want?” Ya mumbled unhappily, thinking of how it must be taunting him that he was too weak to catch a fish whose coloration made it a living target, so vivid in so de-saturated an environment. It flicked the tiny frills next to its face, and swayed its head in the direction of the spiral’s damaged wing and the bruising around his lungs.

“What, my wing? Yeah, I managed to break it in the storm last night. Go me, right?” he intoned sarcastically, more to himself than to the fish, really. The eel darted back into the waters, and then swam out of view suddenly, and Ya snorted. “Figures. Silly fish. It probably would have tasted nasty anyways, I don’t much like eating fish.” Just as he was about to close his eyes, and at least attempt to get a little bit of sleep hopefully, he heard a splashing noise near his face that made him glance up to see what it was.

And there was the eel, quite close to him actually, or as close to the land he could get without being on it, with some kind of grub-looking creature writhing around in its mouth, a green-tinted little insect that Ya recognized as a shellbug, a little delicacy the “trainer” dragons of the clan liked to bring back from the mire occasionally. He sat up, peering at the eel with inquisitiveness, when it suddenly spat out the insect in his direction, then dashed off again.

Reminded of his hunger, he quickly consumed the insect before it could escape, wondering if the fish had brought him this food on purpose, or had merely accidentally dropped its prey on seeing him? But that question was answered quite quickly as the eel returned not once – but several more times, each trip carrying yet another one of the shellbugs in its jaws, offered up to Ya, and swimming off to fetch another, until the spiral was quite satisfied and no longer ruled by his hunger.

Feeling more content, he looked around for the eel, hoping to ask it some questions, for surely it had some form of intelligence? To his dismay, the eel was nowhere in sight, and with a full stomach, drowsiness began to engulf his being, the urge to rest overwhelming him, and soon Ya drifted into sleep, dreaming of golden eels with wings that flew with him through the sky.

TRIVIA
  • This dragon is the second "incarnation" of this character; he was originally an Ice/Obsidian/Emerald dragon (#221237) instead. This dragon was name-changed before exalting to preserve Ya's name as being unique.
  • Despite the fact that it is a goal of mine to train all of my permanent dragons to Level 10, Ya will always remain Level 1 because he is a loser.
  • Ya's mate is Shade; any other dragons he has been bred with are not canon to my clan lore and are only a gameplay mechanism to me. I'm also fully aware that linking the "range" he has with Shade is completely pointless... or is it?!
  • The three dragons mentioned in the beginning of the story (Ralvurahva, Dheginsea, and Zetsubou) were all dragons of mine at the time I actually wrote it. They have since departed from my lair though. Additionally, this story was written when the Mire coliseum venue was the highest level venue available.
  • The reason I added Akiri's 2017 April Fools joke "HD" image to his list of artwork below is because it honestly really fits his character in my opinion. 10/10 would noodle again.
  • Ya's two-letter name is no longer possible as a combination on Flight Rising, making his name extra special.
