Tempest
Unpredictable || Energetic || Exuberant

If not for the softly glowing yellow of his eyes, you would never be able to tell that Tempest is a Light dragon. Along with a mastery of storm magic, he has an erratic personality more befitting a Lightning or Wind dragon- this has led to a lot of confusion for those who don’t initially realize where Tempest actually hails from.

During a Beastclans raid, Tempest, still in his egg, was stolen from his nest in the Sunbeam Ruins. Despite efforts from his birth clan to find him, the raiding party managed to escape to the Shifting Expanse. A particularly violent thunderstorm was raging that night, dark sky constantly flashing with lightning. The harpy carrying Tempest’s egg could barely keep herself from getting thrown about by the winds, and soon lost her grip on the shimmering Light egg.

The fall would mean obliteration of the egg, so the harpy didn’t even look back as she soldiered on through the storm. There would be one less dragon in the world, regardless of how the egg was destroyed.

Except that it wasn’t.

Miraculously, Tempest’s egg happened to land in a rare pond, cushioning its fall. It quickly sank to the bottom, lighting up the pond with its radiance. As the storm progressed, lightning bolts struck the water- but unlike any other creature’s egg, Tempest’s just absorbed the magic of it despite its Light heritage.

The only thing that prevented Tempest from hatching in the water and drowning was the Stormcatcher’s intervention. An exalted dragon serving him found the glowing pool and the source of the light, carefully scooping Tempest’s egg out of the water and tucking it in a nearby piece of scrub to hatch in isolation, but also safety.

Tempest came tumbling out of his egg with no one to witness it, eyes glowing yellow but veins humming with Lightning magic. He spent his youth wandering the Shifting Expanse, catching insects to eat and sometimes accidentally discharging lightning when he got too excited.
When he had almost grown out of the hatchling stage -but not quite- Tempest was discovered by a scavenging party from a Wind clan. Rather hungry, he accepted the invitation to come back with them for a bite to eat.

With his tiny wings, Tempest was unable to fly yet. So, needless to say, his experience clinging to the massive back of a Wind Guardian as he zoomed through the air was adrenaline packed and more fun than anything else Tempest had experienced. (He very nearly almost electrocuted the Guardian before getting a hold on himself.)

When Tempest reached the Wind clan’s lair, he proceeded to stuff his face full of food. After he told the dragons there he didn’t have a name, they came up with one that was a mixture of Lightning and Wind influence: Tempest. The young Spiral quite liked it, and happily adopted it as his own.
He was so ecstatic about it that he accidentally shot lightning at a nearby dragon carrying a bunch of bottles filled with different colored liquids.

Several explosions later, Tempest learned that the dragon he had almost electrocuted was the clan’s local alchemist, and the bottles that she was forced to drop to dodge the lightning were highly reactive.

Once the Wind clan was able to put out the fires and ascertain that no one was injured, they all got a good laugh out of the whole thing. Tempest, who was incredibly embarrassed, almost ran away before he was caught by the clan’s mage. Though a master of Wind magic, he understood Tempest’s struggles and offered to help the strange little Light hatchling with his Lightning magic. Tempest sheepishly accepted the invitation, and his studies soon began.

Curiously, during his few weeks as the Wind mage’s student, he developed an affinity for Wind magic as well as Lightning. His teacher concurred with the young Tempest that it made absolutely no sense, but resolved to teach him what he knew about Wind magic as well as how to handle his Lightning magic.

But Tempest’s erratic personality, just as unpredictable as the hybrid breed of storm magic he controlled, soon began to grate on the nerves of the dragons he was staying with. His mood swings were often violently intense, and it was only three or so weeks before the clan leader advised Tempest, now a young adolescent, to seek a new home.

Tempest, slighted by this, left in the night without even saying goodbye to his teacher. (He regrets the decision even now and hopes that he might find him again someday.)

Tempest spent the rest of his adolescence alone, maturing into a grown dragon and coming to master his storm magic. He never chose to stay with another clan, fearing an eventual dismissal like the one he got with the Wind clan.

Tempest continued to wander. He had a short and unpleasant stint in the Scarred Wasteland, one that sent him fleeing to the nearest elemental region that didn’t make him constantly sick.
Thus, Tempest found himself in the darkness of the Tangled Wood. Now he rather wished he had Light magic as well as Light eyes, because even during the day the Shadow region was difficult to navigate.

One day, Tempest was battling his way through the Foxfire Bramble when he stumbled across the most beautiful dragon he had ever had the privilege to behold. She was a Spiral like him, with delicate, light pink runes glowing in her purple scales. He was instantly bewitched, and fell head over heels in love -nearly tying himself in a knot- the moment she spoke to him.

She introduced herself as Errai, the exalt guide of the clan which resided in the Starlit Hearth. If he acted starstruck by her beauty and her shimmering personality, she had the grace not to comment and embarrass him. Instead, she invited him to come back with her to the Starlit Hearth for the afternoon. Tempest eagerly accepted.

And so began a relationship every dragon in the Starlit Hearth loved to talk about. After the first afternoon, Errai told him he was welcome back anytime, and Tempest gladly took her up on this offer. They quickly became mates, and Tempest was basically a member of her clan in everything but name.

Pierrot, the leader of the clan of the Starlit Hearth, a dragon so unlike the leader of the Wind clan, soon remedied that. In front of the whole clan he offered for Tempest to join them permanently, since he was always welcome anyways.

The words made Tempest’s heart swell, and made him so choked up that he couldn’t answer immediately.

“Just say yes already!” Came the voice of Photon, another close friend he had made there at the Starlit Hearth. Everyone burst into laughter, even Tempest, and he managed to say yes through his giggles.

Today, Tempest uses his hybrid storm magic to aid the clan in battle. Oftentimes he fights beside Photon, his dear friend and fellow master of Lightning magic. (If Tempest can’t be found with Errai, he’s often slinging Lightning around with Photon or observing storms with him.)

Tempest and Errai remain very close. Somehow she always seems to know how to deal with him when he has his mood swings, and can get him back to his normal self. He doesn’t know how she manages it, and she always teases him not to get himself tied up in knots trying to figure out.
He doesn’t. He’s happy just to know that she always has his back.
