Cattail is one part modesty, one part true magic. Heralded as the king of his clan, though he prefers to be called its monarch instead for its association with butterflies, he is a prodigy like no other, born to the heart of great power, yet born without the ambition to shape it as his own.

The border between the Sunbeam Ruins, the Shifting Expanse, and the Sea of a Thousand Currents is a wild place. The sun, the sea, and the storms wage violent wars for power over the shifting sands, and such great power does not disappear without leaving traces on the world below. Cattail was born here, heir to grand magics in all their opposition, and yet he did not draw on them. Instead, he was a curious hatchling, born with no one to tell him no, and with the insatiable desire to see it for himself. Those borderlands were his home, and he combed every inch of them to witness the miracles and marvels that they held, even the secret ones and the special ones. Learning was a joy, and Cattail was inherently joyous.

For years, he wandered the borders, content with his explorations and happy to spend his days lounging in the sun or observing the storms. But those days came to an end when Aethos arrived, his ragtag band of soldiers in tow. They were in a bad way after a skirmish with a neighboring clan, and it looked as if they needed help. After convincing Aethos that he was no threat, Cattail provided them an escort back to their desert home, leading them through the more treacherous stretches of sand with nary a scratch.

To his surprise, Aethos offered Cattail a chance to join his army, and to Aethos's surprise, Cattail accepted. There was still more to see beyond the borderlands, and Aethos had a way for him to see it. So Cattail trained long and hard to earn his place beyond the rank of an escort, excelling in archery and stealth tactics as if he was born for it. Even in battle, he held his own, impressing Raven the night guard, despite her nearly unreadable nature. At her request, his advancement in the army was swift, and sooner than he realized it, he was back to the lands that raised him, full up with new confidence and vigor.

Now, he presides over the clan's northern post, barely within the Shifting Expanse. King remains an uncomfortable title for him, but it is eased somewhat by Nile's consistent, faithful presence at his side. She is a queen more than worth her salt, and he appreciates her ability to open up a conversation to all parties rather than shutting it down. Not to mention he values the aid she offers him in all matters; king is merely a title, not proof that he deserves to rule, and as young as he is, it gives him heart to know that he does not have to shoulder the intimidating load alone. Nile, Aethos, and Raven will be there to support him every step of the way, and in return, he can share his home with them.
