A Tale of Faded Light

I listen as Reiko's morning call fades into the misty morning of Gleanreal, my tails twitching as droplets form on my fur. Mornings like these are always so dreary to me. Dull, if you will. Dampened, like everything became after the attack all those years ago. Actually, wasn't it foggy that day? It was during the change of the watch from day and night. Yes, that's right. A foggy twilight. It's hard to forget that day, really.

As Reiko's voice dies, I turn about to the Festival Shiro, who are practically dancing on their paws. Despite their age, all of them much older than kits, they still have the excitement I'd expect from someone with only one tail. It doesn't surprise me, really. They aren't fighters. They're artists. They make others happy. They don't fight. I recall what my mate, Kogane, told me the Wraith had spotted the night before, and what places were currently safe. The old ruins to the south of the Shattered Temple, and the square with the broken fountain to the east. I'll be patrolling the southwest today, but first...

"I'll accompany you to the old Pipe Fox Fountain to the east. The old stained glass helps the light tricks, doesn't it? And the overgrown garden has a lovely bloom this time of year, if you don't mind the fog." It seemed that the three agreed. Then I hear her, the Trickster Yako, her voice cutting through the morning air like a firecracker.

"Go to the garden! Sure! With that fog, I can blend right in! Gotta practice my stealth." I frown at that grin, and I know she's got mischief on the mind. As the Festival Shiro chatter about their plans, I pull her aside. She sits down and stares at me with that oh-so-innocent look that I know is far from innocent, her tails twitching as she waits for me to speak. I know what she's expecting. A lecture on meddling with wilder plants imbued with the chaotic magic of Remnant, or perhaps some sort of warning for pulling tricks on the Festival Shiro while they practiced their trade. I don't think she expected what I said next.

"Did you set the prank up yet?" She shook her head after a few moments debating whether to tell me the truth or not. I know she wouldn't lie about that. She'd want me to see it as well, after all. She always did like an audience, after all. I nod in reply. "Good. You're going to be patrolling the southwest with me then. The wraith got some rest in earlier when the other Night Shiro took up their own post. He'll be watching after the Festivals. The Foxfire's gotta leave soon to deliver some silks from the Night Shiro to the Great Temple, after all." Well, she didn't look too happy with that, but at least she wasn't arguing. Better than being startled by our local Wraith Yako, after all. At least to her.

As she watches me leave to prepare, I pause. "Oh, and Aurathia?" I glance back, spotting those amethyst eyes lock with mine as she waits for what I have to say next. I give her a slight smile, my own dual-toned eyes glimmering with some mischief of my own. A reflection of what I once was, even if the light of one eye had faded to a silvery white with my curse. "... Bring your Alchemist Vials that little Foxfire got you. I don't know how you do it, but whatever you stow in those bottles seems to cause those Ashen abominations to run for the hills." She gives me a genuine smile this time, if still quite mischievous, and races off like a shadow in the night.

I shake my head and trod off to gather my own supplies, remnants of when I was a Shiro and, later, when I was a Tenko. When I was Mitsuko. I try to ignore my slight limp as I walk through the mist. I'll need to get ready for my patrol, of course after escorting the Festival Shiro to their fountain. And the Wraith, of course. As I prepare for the patrol, I remind myself of the mantra I've spoken since I was cursed all those years ago.

I am no longer Mitsuko the Tenko. I am Awase, a Cursed Tenko, and a remnant of the Shiro I once was. Even as my golden light fades, as colors dull with every passing day, I will continue to serve as I've always done, no matter the cost. Even if it means to bear a curse of my own.

Cursed Tenko

This rare breed of Tenko is formed through tragedy and power. Cursed Tenko are a Tenko whose enemies have either managed to curse them for some misdeed or their souls have been warped. Cursed Tenko are both seekers of redemption and swords of vengeance - it is difficult to tell which one is which and so they are often avoided. Some Tenko clans go to great lengths to aid cursed Tenko who seek an antidote and imprison those who have fallen. It is not uncommon for a cursed Tenko to experience changes in eye color or forms of heterochromia as they struggle to find a cure. All cursed Tenko retain their nine tails.

xxxx» Kitsune Subspecies Information «

In far off corner of the elemental planes, where magic is at its strongest and most rampant, Imperials and Pearlcatchers have been transformed into strange shapes. They appear more fox-like than dragon like, losing their longer toes in trade for paws and long whiskers in trade for, well, whiskers. Larger ears for Pearlcatchers seem to dwarf their heads and imperials grow shorter, more antler-like horns. They grow heavy coats of fur and more interestingly, long tails. These dragon-kitsune vary in size and nature but share aspects of both their heritage.

It is said that a kitsune dragon can both fly and retain their breath powers, while also possessing the abilities of their kitsune relatives. Transformation powers come easily and their will-o-wisp like familiars follow them everywhere. To the Yako, invisibility is added to their repertoire while Tenko and Shiro varieties prides themselves on their supernatural powers of healing and powerful spells. Nogitsune have an intense connection with nature, no matter where they go. It is powerful enough for them to call for aid even in the depths of the earth. Despite their individual powers, all variants can live an immensely long time and they are naturally very cunning and clever. While dragon-kitsune vary in temperament and preference, the majority of them enjoy jokes, food and a good prank.

Many kitsune-dragons stay with their own variants in carefully hidden caves, glades, and shrines. Others prefer solitude, like the Redeemed or Malicious. Nevertheless, the arrival of a kitsune is often heralded by their ghostly lights. If it is a Yako, you generally won't see them. The friendlier varieties will often appear before the visitor, if only to examine or cause trouble. These days though, fights with beastclans have caused them to become more curious about the realms of dragons. A kitsune may bring fortune and trouble in equal measure but they can be valuable allies!

The color of their ghost fire is determined by the color of their eyes, a remnant of the forces that created them. In addition, Lesser Kitsune keep their jewel separate. The color of jewel is an amalgamation of their fur and eye color which makes it easier to hide in their fur. At this stage, the jewel is extremely important to their wellbeing. Having it stolen means a kitsune must obey and having it broken would easily kill a Lesser Kitsune. Kitsune usually hide theirs in collars of jewels and beads, as once they reach five tails the jewel becomes purely the color of their eyes. The loss of a jewel may not kill an adult Kitsune but it could emotionally or mentally damage them. They are able to recreate their jewel but at a loss of one or more tails. The process is somewhat traumatic and it can take years to recover so a Kitsune hides their jewel at all costs.

The skin and the apparel are really nice on her! Her primary color and gene seem to go very well with the colors of the eclipse on the skin as well.
