My respect, Blood Queen!
I'm one of the modest scholars of The Smoldering Coal clan. Recently, one of your beautiful creations lives with us. He is in good health, if I may say so, and is part of our Plague Sect. He, like all your creations, inspired me to experiment with live flesh, metal, and red lyrium.

Today is a great day, my experiment ended with success! And I want to present you one of these wonderful chicks! I hope that he will serve faithfully and truly to you or your goddess!
Yours faithfully,

Lyrium's position in the clan is as the Master of Ceremonies, which he gained after his predecessor Ciro left the clan. He oversees the arrangements of formal events and public rituals for the clan, and he is tasked with the creation and maintenance of the Blood Chimes which hang in the Inner Keep, Depths, and the Shrines out in Cliff Town. In this role he is directly subordinate to the High Priestess Siekte.

He took Majka as a mate before her capture and transformation at the hands of the king, but has seen fit to remain her mate even after, as he has no strong preferences one way or the other, and she can still produce strong children.

Innocent Love
Lyrium and his siblings were hatched in the Scarred Wasteland, in the great nest chambers of a clan which was an ally to The Smoldering Coal. He was not like other dragons, born of a union of magic, but something artificial, among the first of Kirin's successful experiments. He had always been marked for a specific purpose, though it was not one known to him. His earliest days were spent with his siblings and the children of the local clan. These days were sweetest in his memory, though time and poor keeping has fermented them into something sour.

Those were the days he spent with Scrith. That the Scarred wasteland could be grim and unkind was something neither could ever imagine. Not until the day came when Lir was returned to the Smoldering Coal, and he knew he would never see her again.

Experimental Life
He did not spend too much time in Kirin's clan, only long enough for her to be sure of the success of her work, and extract all the necessary information she needed for the next iteration of the project. After this he was quickly returned to the Scarred Wasteland, given as a gift and offering to the Clan of Singing Blood. Here he was taken in by the Construct Artisan, the Conduit and the Machine Faction. All were eager to explore and learn about him and the nature of his existence, each for their own ends.

This was his new life. He was an object of study and further experimentation, though not wholly deprived of will. He had few options but worked with the machine faction and his new masters to slowly earn and gain more rights and favor.

He eventually became an apprentice to the Artisan and a full member of the Machine Faction. He was not happy, but in time happiness didn't mean much to him, there were always more important things to see to.

Blood Witch
His outlook changed the moment he saw her. She strode lightly upon the hanging streets of Clifftown, making her way up to the Apothecary. He did not know, but from there she would find directions to the inner Lair, and to the Queen, whom she hoped to apprentice under.

His heart was lightened and filled up by the memories of a life long passed. Scrith. He did not dare to go near her. So much had come to pass since they were children, and he feared the memory of their love might be washed away. He was very different now than he had been then. There would be little reason for her to even recognize him, he was so utterly transformed.

Lyrium, the Hanging Jewel

She joined the clan, and was set to apprentice under the mages of the clan, and only after her training with them would she be permitted to learn from the Queen. Verthandi, Siekte, and Ayna were to be her teachers, and Lir was careful to not cross her path.

He was successful for a long time and contented himself in knowing she was nearby. It was not hard, as he spent much of his time within the Machine Faction's campus, and it was not a place where Scrith or other witches ventured. However, a chance conversation with Corrosion led her to seek him out.

She knew him immediately. Her Lir. She was overjoyed to be reunited with him, and all the time spent apart seemed to melt away to nothing, and they were as close as they had ever and always been. The reunion brought new promises and plans, that they would be here together meant they could be always together. To that, they swore.

Betrayal
Ayna's betrayal of the Queen changed all of that. The exile of her teacher, who was as close to Scrith as a mother hurt Scrith deeply. She was outraged and disbelieving. Some of the clan turned on her, suspecting that she too might be a traitor and though Verthandi would have gladly vouched for her, Scrith turned bitterly away.

Lir begged her to remain, but she refused, she could not stay and serve under a Queen who had so abused Ayna, let alone apprentice under that demon. That Lir would ask her to stay instead of setting himself immediately to leave with her infuriated and wounded her even more.

She loved him so much it hurt, but that pain could not compare to the pain of leaving him. He would have gone with her, though, had she asked him, but she did not. She did not think she would have to. She did not think he would have resisted leaving, so she could not ask him. "You are not my Lir. You are not the child I loved so long ago. I would give anything for it to have ended the day I last laid eyes on you, instead of continued on with these taunting lies of future love."

Her parting words wounded him. She fled the clan and left him behind. He was sure he died that day, but his body, bound by plague, persisted against his wishes. Eventually, the pain of heartbreak receded wounds healed over into deep aching scars. He returned to his life of passive unhappiness. He did not believe in love anymore, or joy.

Duties
To taunt further his heart, many of her old duties fell to him, in addition to his work as an apprentice and the way he was held subject to Sahko and to the Machine Faction. These tasks were helping create the Blood Chimes which hang in the Inner Keep, maintaining the Shattered Constructs with Verthandi, and assisting Siekte with whatever tasks Opatiaru could not handle alone.

Many other dragons tried to comfort him (for he was beautiful), and they did in some way, but their love was never so pure as Scrith's. They might have softened his days and eased his nights, but none could heal his heart.

He had never before felt resentment towards work or his masters, but now he felt like the study and experimentation were becoming torturous. He was an object, and even the meager amount of favor and rank he had managed to claim seemed hollow.

His bitterness and resentment sharpened intro hate. Hate for Sahko more than anything, who was the worst about treating him like an object, but also for the Machine Faction, who were happy to use him for their own ends. Hate for the mages and witches who were supposed to teach Scrith.

He was at odds with himself, for he was still loyal to the Clan, to the Queen, and to the Plaguebringer. He wanted to serve, but the service had become foul.

Demon
Michaelis approached Lir, or perhaps it was Lir who sought out Michaelis. He does not remember anymore. He wanted to no longer be an object of desire - not to Sahko, the Machine Faction, nor the Dragonesses who thought to pursue him. He wanted the power to serve the Plaguebringer in his own right.

The demon was more than happy to oblige.

So Lir, who in some long past days was a sweet and dutiful dragon - who knew the pleasures of love and joy - who knew the pain of loss and betrayal...

...was twisted into a demonic monster. His memories and painful experience cleansed by fire and left to become colder than ice and harder than steel.

Lir was quick to denounce the Machine Faction, the alterations they had installed inside his body had been corroded away by the demon's power, and replaced with infernal scales which would repel any invasion of metal. Sahko was initially pleased until he learned that Lir had set to no longer answer to him either.

The Spiral would see Lir's defiance punished; he had rank and authority above the Pearlcatcher. The dispute was to be settled in the Arena. Lyrium defeated his old master there, as Sahko had thought he knew everything there was to know about Lir, and had failed to account for the incredible alterations which had been made to his former subject by the demon's influence. The show of strength granted Lir great favor in the clan. His loyalty to the Plaguebringer, and knowledge of plague rituals from his apprenticeship saw him made the Master of Ceremonies, because Ciro left the clan very soon after... for reasons not well understood.

He now serves the Plaguebringer and the Clan in this capacity and bows his head only to his Queen and his Goddess.
