MERLE
Some kind of magical construct

[ Lore ]

Merle is a good example to the fact that her parents don't limit themselves to clay and soft materials, but often will experiment with wood and other natural items. Her body is cut from an extremely old specimen of tree that's been hardened to the conditions of a dry, arid climate, it's timber a beautifully dark tone, with still darker highlights within, and her wings are fashioned from a paler part of the tree, able to show off it's unique look as well, shaped for flight by her parent's enchantments.

At first glance, one would assume she follows suit with her siblings, with some kind of significant stone embedded in the materials making up the hatchling. They wouldn't be exactly wrong, though there's a bit more to it than that; the wood making up her body is actually petrified, having turned to stone long, long ago, and the eye-catching pieces have simply been polished to bring attention to some of the rock-like qualities and look of the ancient timber.

Though, as Merle will often amuse those around her with stories and memories from a time since long lost, one might wonder if her parents had gotten their hands on more than just a piece of petrified wood.

This was with her bio when I bought her from (now exalted) lore parents. I can't seem to find the original seller, so if you'd happen to know who it is, let me know and I'll happily add credit!

• You feel the knife first, digging into your skin. Stabbing and scraping, slicing parts of you away. Bit after bit falling to a dark loam floor. There is some pain at first; knives are never pleasant. But soon the discomfort fades away, replaced by the exhilarating realization that you have felt something at all. While others would bellow, bemoaning parts of them lost, you exult in the new shape that is left behind.

• When the scales are lifted from your eyes you cry out at first, for the world nearly overwhelms you with its splendor. It seems there is too much for you to take in, and you think you will be extinguished simply by the sheer magnitude of it. There is a depth to the world you could not have imagined before, and now you are sinking into it. Drowning in shadows and shades and tints and hues, colors flooding through the windows of your soul. It’s beautiful, every bit of it. You drown in a whirlpool of color, and it’s more glorious than anything you could ever have dreamed of.

• Too much insidious air exhaled, and others smother beneath the weight of it, their brains slowly shutting down, hearts thump-thump-sputtering to a halt. But what, for them, eventually collapses into a ponderous death is for you the beginning of a new life. You draw that air into your throat, and what would crush others instead invigorates you. Scents all twining together, telling you that this world breathes, just you do. That it lives, just as you do.

• The smallest bite is an explosion between your teeth, sensations and perceptions crowding together and clamoring to be noticed. It fizzles on your tongue and then, in an instant, is gone. What was that sensation? The sweetness...sourness...or perhaps the bitterness of it? Too fleeting, almost excruciatingly so. You must understand. You must have more.

• It starts from within. Up through the soles of your feet — a fluttering. Soft at first, almost hesitant, like a butterfly fearing it will be smashed out of the sky. Then it gains confidence, and its song reaches your ears. A beat, comforting in its monotony and constance. You are heartless in the truest sense, lacking that storied construct of muscle and blood, but what need have you for one? The heartbeat of the world itself, ages and times long past, is what strengthens you and drives you on. You’re still here, that song declares to you, and you know you will endure.

• Stone remembers. Memories in the rock, entombed, tales told in words of teeth and shell and bone. Not all can read them, and few can tell those stories. Fewer still are those who care for them. Yet who says stone cannot care? You, carved from time-pressed rock — stone that still remembers what it was to be crowned in sunlight, garbed in coats of stately green leaves. Flowers blooming in your grasp, studded with fruits like gemstones. The cataclysms that struck the world only put you to sleep, rocking you in slumber so profound it was broken only by magic, like a kiss. Now you reach out with talons polished to a brilliant shine and pluck a story from the pages of the world. Written upon a fossilized leaf, or a striated pebble, or a piece of bone. You begin with “Once upon a time...” just as every good storyteller does, but you never end with happily ever after. There is no happily ever after, for nothing ever ends. You are proof that this is true.

I feel like Merle had a hard time adapting to the mannerisms of other dragons at first and struggles with talking with strangers freely even now. She'll often put up a persona which she has difficulties to break out of.
This causes issues when getting to know said dragon better as she becomes nearly a new dragon personality-wise.

However she will be loyal to anyone who accepts and respects her and those whom she trusts as well. You'd do well befriending this odd dragon.

(beautiful skin btw, and the lore in your lair is really cool and fenceboi is a blessed dragon fhsdjhfjkshk)

"You creak like an ancient ship and smell of dust-covered bookcases. The air around you shimmers with lingering magic.
I feel like you know lots, but also not, but learning is always part of life."

"Oh my, I didn't notice you at first there! I thought you were a bunch of branches, sorry!"
