Biography

| OZYMANDIAS | [♫] The Hewn City
{ Royal Guard | He/Him | Bi }

The Hewn City; the Shroud; the Fool; Devourer of Sin; Usurper of Weak Kings; Ozymandias.

Call him as you like, for he is all and he is none. He holds within him his Patron’s greatest secrets, festering beneath the pitch of his impenetrable scales. She charged him with them long ago, when he was young, when the world was new, and he has kept them all these many ages. He has slept, lost in dreams, and they have faded from the waking world, leaving him their sole inheritor.

What is it that he witnessed? What is it that he recalls, in those fleeting dreams, their images like running watercolors against the backs of his eyelids?

Some believe it was he who brought the Hewn City to its knees, and that his punishment was to stand vigil over the graves of those whose lives he had stolen away. If he hears you say so, however, you will be lucky to escape with your own life. He is a guardian, he claims, not a monster, though his great size and nebulous nature would suggest otherwise. He has only ever desired to protect; by the runes upon his body, he would swear it.

Yes, he did stand vigil, but his post was no punishment. Merely, he was best suited to the task, of all the Lightweaver’s children—he, and Thalassinus, who cast the runes he swears by. There was no better vessel for the magic She granted him, no Imperial stronger, older, or wiser to quell the darkness beyond the gate. He went into his long isolation willingly, with pride…

...but the question persists: who is he, what is he, and what terrible secrets does he keep?

It was thought that Ozymandias was immovable. Never once had he strayed from his directive, staunchly loyal in his defense of the Hewn City and its mysteries. Those who delved too deeply, he frightened with shadows, mere hints of his existence; those whose hearts were corrupt, who sought to use the City for evil, he consumed, piece by piece, until not even their blackened souls remained.

It seemed he would stand watch forevermore, until time had turned him to stone.

Then, unexpectedly, Phantasos came to him, and declared, "You're going to be my royal guard."

Ozymandias, who sensed that the world was not as it once had been, agreed, on the condition that responsibility fall to his young charge. He was undeniably taken with Phantasos, a bright and charismatic heir with much to prove; perhaps he saw some of himself in the boy, some of the dragon he had been before, when he had wandered the earth with Thalassinus at his side. Phantasos was a small spark in a dark world. Surely fanning him into a flame was a more worthy task than overseeing a dead city.

Perhaps he had merely grown weary of the silence.

The Lightweaver did not come for him, as he'd feared She might, and Ozymandias slipped quietly into a mundane life among commonfolk. He guards Phantasos and Clan Feldspar as zealously as he does the City—some would say more so. His best years were spent ensuring that the past did not repeat itself; now, reunited with Thalassinus, given new purpose, he can at last look toward the future.
