born of thunderstorms it stormed the day she hatched. the scorched earth hissed at the intrusion, and the mirror's eggshell shook with the force of the rain droplets. when the first bolt of lightning struck the ground, she knew - it was time to emerge. the bleached rocks rose around menacingly, but more menacing was the growl of her stomach, so she tested her newly-free legs and wobbled her way over to a bleached bone looming over her. if anything can be said for mirrors, it's that their teeth are sharp - she gnawed and worked the bone until marrow filled her stomach. it was only later, pacing the edges of the canyon that trapped her, that she found the guardian's skull. dreaming is all one does in an egg, dreaming and waiting while nebulous shapes float in your vision, so it surprised her that night when she saw something alive in her dreams. it was indistinct - a red shape pacing at the edge of her vision - but it was real, and it was alive. "traete yejhez idedroc*" it said commandingly, and she startled, glancing around for the source of the noise. a huge red - something - loomed in front of her, a shape she'd only seen scratched into the walls of the canyon, and she stared. then her head tingled, and she felt memories of bones alive, one rib cage bearing her toothmarks, and she understood. thunder boomed, so loud and so sharp she felt the hairs of her sleeping body rise, and then she awoke. she would learn, some years later, that they called that place carrion canyon, that if karma hadn't felt the ancient bones grumbling and nearly dreamwalked into her, she'd probably have died there. she'd learn too that the lightning storms amplified magic, let her unconscious form drift over to arcane and into a place she still hadn't quite figured out. mostly, she'd learn that she had a home. no one dragon really watched over her - the entire clan was thrilled to have a baby around, and she was free to wander from demon's herb-fragrant cave to conch's toasty inn to hapax's calm garden. as she grew, she learned, learned how to fight and win, how to hunt food from the surrounding woods (even if it could levitate), how to let the storms soak into her pelt and electrify her heartbeat. with no other lightning dragons around, it was hard for ipthenia to control her magic at first. she had teeth and claws and bulk, things she knew how to hone and use, and magic was this strange difficult unpredictable thing. but the other dragons of her clan insisted, strongly, that getting fried when she was upset really did not help situations, and so she roamed deep into the starwood strand for days on end, focusing on the spark of life in each living thing until she could bend its form. finally, elemental spheres swirling around her, she knew it was time to come back. ipthenia mainly serves as a hunter, gathering meat for the clan. she often paces the perimeters of apotelesma, keeping watch for any ley-trapped beast that may threaten her family. she's often the first one to see new arrivals, though she prefers that others greet them. *"stop eating dragonkind" in draconic |
