Biography

The day was bright and breezy. The gentle flow of air felt like a cool hand brushing through your mane, provided you had one. The sun was out, but it didn't blaze down and make everything deadly hot. Instead, it was a glorious spring morning throughout the Wind region. A day nothing could go wrong.

Monsoon yelped, charging through the grass, which leaned in her direction as if directing the dragon chasing her where to go. Her body was nothing but a gray streak as she shot through the tall reeds and grasses that were so abundant in her flight's territory. The look on her face was sheer terror, and her legs felt week as she bounded. The only reason she chose not to fly was so she could be covered by the tall grass.

“Monsoon, please! Wait!” her pursuer called after her, her voice concerned as it typically was. The chaser was surprisingly large, but very agile. Monsoon winced as she moved her legs even faster, so they were literally invisible, just a blur of gray.

“No,” she murmured, mostly to herself. The Skydancer felt her heart pounding in her throat. She'd been cornered one too many times in her life. Monsoon wasn't about to let them do it again. She was fast, cautious, ready for whatever they threw at her. She wouldn't fight, not ever, but she was always ready to dodge.

“Please, Monsoon?” Katrin pleaded. The huge Guardian was gaining on her. The Skydancer realized she was slowing down by quite a bit. She'd already been running more than she should have. And it had been a while since she'd eaten. The young dragon couldn't go on forever.

Monsoon quickly slipped under a rock balancing on another rock, forming a tiny cave for her. She curled up there, shaking like a leaf. Her heart continued to pound and she had trouble catching her breath. The poor thing was absolutely exhausted, and she didn't have the strength to run anymore. She'd been happy without a clan for this reason. Dragons left her alone when she was on her own.

Suddenly, four paws were pacing in front of her. Katrin was close. Monsoon squeezed her eyes shut. It wasn't that she didn't like the other dragons, she was just so jumpy after everything that had happened to her. She hoped they knew that. It wasn't their faults she turned away. It was just in her nature to want to run.

Katrin soon had her nose to the ground, sniffing around like a bloodhound. Eventually, her eyes met with Monsoon’s, and the Skydancer froze in place, trembling from head to toe. The dragon looked more terrified than any the Guardian remembered seeing. Katrin wasn't sure what they did to Monsoon in her old clan, but they would pay dearly.

“Monsoon-” she began, in a gentle and calm voice.

The Skydancer bolted again. She just didn't want to talk. That wasn't a crime. It was just how she thought other dragons were. She grew up not knowing much else. The gray Skydancer made a run for it, Katrin hot on her heels. The Guardian wouldn't quit until she got through to her new friend. Monsoon needed a home. This was the perfect clan to find one.

Katrin, the ever patient motherly dragon, found herself frustrated. She'd practically run a marathon trying to make Monsoon happy. And how did that Skydancer repay her? By shutting her out, running from her. It made the Guardian angry. But Katrin knew better than to shout. Instead, she chased Monsoon into a cave outside the clan meeting place. There, she did what Monsoon feared. She cornered her.

“Monsoon, please. Stop running. I don't know what happened to you, but I'm here to help you,” Katrin murmured softly. She was sincere, yet Monsoon looked far from comforted.

“Leave me alone,” her voice broke. A pathetic whimper. She was disgusted with her fear, but her skittish demeanor was something she knew she'd never be rid of. It was the only reason she preferred being on her own. So no other dragons could try to fix what was far too broken to repair.

“Tell me what happened to you,” Katrin said sternly. Her voice echoed sharply throughout the cave. Monsoon gasped and staggered back a bit, her hindquarters bumping into the wall. Katrin's features softened in moments. “Please? I just want to know so I can help you,” she amended her previous statement.

“You can't help me!” the Skydancer insisted. She turned her head and buried it in her paws, quivering. “No one can help me!” she suddenly sprang to her feet and try to rush by Katrin, who held a wing out to stop her. The Guardian wore a mask of pity and sympathy.

“I can,” Katrin insisted. “I just want to hear your story. We don't know much about you, Monsoon. We don't even know what you do, you know.” The Guardian forced a smile, though it wasn't very convincing. Yet it was enough for Monsoon. She was sick of living like a coward.

Monsoon sat back on her haunches. Calmly, she took out her sewing kit and began to toy at a few threads. She got her knitting needles and started to work, keeping her eyes down. For some reason, she seemed much calmer. The cave was dark and frightening and damp, but the Skydancer seemed focused on a lost memory from long ago. She lowered her head sadly.

“Knitting helps me calm down,” she explained, her voice dull. “At least, it usually does.” Her speech was monotone, her eyes blank. But her hands were expressive. They jumped to show her nerves, worked diligently to prove her strength, and twitched occasionally to hint at something beyond the surface.

Katrin looked on in silence. She was amazed. Monsoon had only just started and was already creating a gorgeous red and blue scarf. She was extremely fast with her trade. But it just wasn't enough to turn Katrin away. She got the feeling most dragons weren't persistent enough to find out what made Monsoon who she was.

“Tell me your story, my sister,” Katrin smiled, sitting down and watching her clan mate. Monsoon's head jerked up at that, but she didn't speak a word. Instead, she stayed quiet and looked frightened. Katrin smiled encouragingly, ever the patient motherly Guardian she always had been.

“I was born in a Wind clan like this one,” Monsoon said quietly. Her hands toyed idly with the threads of her new scarf, which she was nearly finished with. The final product would be beautiful. Katrin couldn't help but grin at the thought of Monsoon making someone else happy. Maybe that was what the Skydancer needed. A chance to be the strong one.

Katrin listened intently. Her attention was dedicated solely to Monsoon. And Monsoon had her eyes in her knitting project. There were tears brimming the Skydancer's eyes. This didn't seem a story she wanted to tell. Yet she was telling Katrin. That made the older Guardian very proud. She felt like Monsoon would trust her one day.

“I was with my mother, when someone grabbed me. They kidnapped me,” now Monsoon was really crying. “They hurt me and I was afraid. I was a hatchling. I didn't know what to do. They threw me into a cell and left me there. Hours passed. I thought they forgot about me.”

Katrin winced. It hadn't even reached its climax and she was shaking. Who would do that? To a sweet and innocent child, at that? And why? The Guardian's mind was reeling with questions even Monsoon probably couldn't answer.

“Those hours faded into days, weeks, months, year. Fed twice a day, kept captive. They believed I had something sacred about me,” Monsoon sobbed, wiping her tears away with the finished scarf. It looked amazing.

Katrin could only shake her head as the Skydancer continued. “One day, I grew smarter. I started running. And as you can see, I never stopped.”

She and the Guardian met eyes. Monsoon was trembling, years running down her face. She almost looked angry at the Guardian for making her tell her story. It wasn't a detailed story, but Katrin could imagine well enough. It made her shudder.

Suddenly, Monsoon broke her glare. She used her wings to shoot over Katrin's head, then she rushed out of there, charging away as fast as she could.

Timid, skittish, easily scared. Been in captivity from birth up till someone bought her. Most of the time, whenever anyone tries to talk to her she either panics and hides. She's only somewhat comfortable around a select few clan members and even then she can't be around them for long. Knitting and sewing help calm her down a little.
