Biography

Keiji Hayashida

Inside the Palace | 敬二 | ' Nobles Son '

Crush || Theme

Keiji, sometimes called Kei, is seen as a calm and stoic boy. At first glance he seems like a cold and distant child, but that’s not who he really is. He was brought up to show no weakness or emotion, effectively banishing the childhood he had always wanted, and at age eleven he has grown to hate his family. However, when he is away from his father and all his expectations, it’s like he’s an entirely different person. He is kind and protective, an adventurous boy with a love for learning all he can about the world. This side of Keiji is hardly ever seen, and can only be brought out by his best friend Akihiro.

Aki and Keiji met when he was roughly six years old. He had been sent to roam the castle alone whilst his father was invited to a private meeting, and had stumbled across a huge garden. After a long, well thought out pffft debate with himself he eventually decided to explore it. Keiji had made it to roughly the middle of the garden when he had found a koi pond, and another boy along with it. The boy hadn’t noticed him, and had been staring at his reflection in the water when he lost his balance and fell in. Keiji had immediately jumped in after him, and hauled the boy back onto the bridge. As fate would have it that boy turned out to be Akihiro, the Emperors son. Instead of berating and calling the guards to punish him like Keiji though he would do, Akihiko merely smiled and thanked him profusely, before announcing they would be the best of friends. That declaration had held true, and five years later they were still inseparable.

Stories

“The threat has been neutralized, remain calm and go back to sleep.” Another guard, one Keiji vaguely recognized, tried to console him. It did little to help the panic rising in the young one’s chest. If only they had let him go and find Aki earlier, he wouldn’t be missing now!

“I can’t find Aki!” Keiji tried to explain. It was terrible being so young, despite how he was going to be Aki’s guard one day, everyone still thought he didn’t know anything.

Even though he was ignored, everyone else was starting to flutter around, whispering amongst themselves as they wondered where Aki could be. Was it possible that the assassins had kidnapped him? Maybe the others had created a distracted so they could get to the young prince.

Keiji groaned in frustration, twisting a couple beads on his bracelet in his anxiety. No one was paying him any attention, and he quickly moved through the halls, shouting out Aki’s name. What would he do without his best friend?

Anxiety clawed at his chest as he checked every nook and cranny, every empty room that hadn’t been used in so long. Keiji could almost hear the Emperor shouting, wondering where his son was, and why he hadn’t been found yet. Keiji found it harder and harder to draw in breath, it was as though his chest was tight, refusing to allow him to relax.

“Aki! Aki if you can hear me, everything’s okay! You can come out!” Keiji shouted as loudly as he could, which over the sounds of everyone frantically searching, didn’t come out very loud.

Keiji didn’t last long inside, ignoring the hustle and bustle of many other people as they searched for Aki. Outside was cold, the biting winter air making his breath come out of his body in a fog, and his fingers to tingle.

“Aki! Aki, it’s okay, you can come out now!” Keiji walked out, his shoes making soft sounds against the ground. A soft sound, almost unheard, made Keiji walk further into the gardens, the closed bulbs of flowers watching him as he walked quietly.

Keiji listened quietly, the sounds louder as he made his way further into the gardens. Keiji made sure to keep quiet, just in case the assassins were still in the gardens, waiting for a perfect opportunity to strike. The further he walked amongst the sleeping flowers, the clearer he heard the sounds of tears, of soft sobbing barely muffled behind a hand. Keiji swept around the corner of the garden, looking at the entrance to the hedge maze, to where Aki was almost hidden, pressed against the bushes.

“Aki!” Keiji didn’t care how loud he was, rushing as quickly as his legs would take him, almost falling in front of his best friend. “You’re okay? Are you hurt? Come on, I have to get you inside, everyone’s so worried about you!”

Keiji reached out, taking his best friends hand, trying to tug him away from the safety of the hidden bushes, but Aki remained rooted in place, looking up at Keiji with tears on his cheeks, a tremble in his form.

“Aki?” Keiji said softly, kneeling in front of his best friend. There was a firm grasp on his hand, an absolute refusal from Aki to let Keiji go. “Hey, it’s okay, you’re okay. You’re safe now.”

Aki slowly nodded, but refused to let go of his best friend. Keiji sat down on the grass, going from letting Aki grasp his hand to simply holding it, trying to be a comforting presence for his best friend. He had never seen Aki so upset, and he never wanted to see this again.

“They got all the bad people out of the home.” Keiji said. Aki placed his free hand over his mouth to stifle another sob. “Do you want to go inside?” Aki frantically shook his head. “That’s okay, we can sit here for a while.”

Keiji moved to sit next to Aki, their arms pressed together and hands entwined. It wouldn’t be long before someone found them, but until then, Keiji would sit with Aki until the tears stopped, and he could be the calm, collected son of the Emperor.

Keiji would make sure Aki never felt scared like this again, not while he was around. He was too important, to the Emperor, to the people, to everyone.

----

Keiji sighed quietly as he heard the extremely obvious shuffling outside the walls of his room. He hadn't yet settled down to sleep, still adorned in his pale silver kimono, and he begrudgingly stood from his seat on the mat as the expected knock at his door finally came. Perched outside was the young prince, Akihiko, looking proud of himself as he sneakily checked his surroundings before squeezing his way through the cracked doorway. He broke into a cheeky grin, his lips nearly connecting a few of the freckles peppered on his pale face. For once, he was missing his decorative kimono, forgoing the bright golden accents for plain black silk. Keiji could also notice strange smudges of white across his neck as the fabric shifted.

"Aki..." He began quietly, his tone bordering incredulous, "Did you steal your sister's makeup?"

In return he received a stuck out tongue and wink before the younger boy spun around and pointed at the door he had come in before with an exaggerated flourish.

"Tonight, Kei-kun, we shall venture..... into town." The last part was spoken in a dramatic whisper, as if he could be discovered at any time. It would have been a bit more impressive if he hadn't already alerted half the castle with his sub-par sneaking methods. Regardless, the guards were plenty used to the antics that Aki would find himself up to, though none of them would expect something this drastic.

"The townspeople shouldn't recognize me since I've never been out of the palace, but I made sure to cover up my markings just in case." No doubt the koi like birthmarks littering the boy's skin would give him away as a member of the royal family, but hopefully no passersby would have the chance to look that close. Kei was more worried about the kinds of people that would be out at this late an hour, rather than the chance of being discovered. However, his worries weren't enough to stifle the short burst of excitement when he thought of sneaking off into the city below.

Keiji leaned down slightly to the shorter of the two, placing a hand on his shoulder and pulling him close to whisper in his ear. "Alright, if we're going to do this, we're doing it safe, okay?"

His arm shook as the younger boy bounced up and down on his heels excitedly, his eyes practically glowing with eagerness. Before he could dart out the door though, he was pulled back with a 'shoosh' and urged to be quieter. Luckily the guards were paying more attention to things trying to get in, rather than things trying to get out. They had nearly been caught at least twice before they managed to reach the safety of the shadows of the town's outskirts.

From that point on, Keiji made sure to keep Aki's hand firmly grasped in his own, it would do no good to lose the younger boy this late at night, and finding him again would surely be impossible without drawing attention to themselves. As exciting as sneaking out into the town was, with the moon high in the sky and the sun asleep below the horizon, there wasn't much to do so late at night. It wasn't long before Akihiko was fidgeting impatiently, and the adrenaline from leaving the palace had all but faded.

With a sigh, he began to lead the prince back in the direction of the palace, only stopping occasionally so that the smaller of the two could scoop up the alley cats and shower them in hugs before they squirmed free. Luckily they had made their way back into the gates just before the sun could begin to peek into the night sky.

The two of them sat at the edge of the garden, watching the rising light shine across the rippling waves of the koi pond, enjoying the gentle breeze that had overtaken them. As Kei felt his hand being squeezed, he realized with a dark blush that he had never let go of Akihiko's hand, but he simply tightened his fingers around his and pointedly avoided his gaze.

He could practically feel the younger boy's smile as the night faded away.
