''I am beautiful now,'' the Guardian said. ''But in a common way.'' ''Uh-huh,'' Andromeda agreed, looking fairly common herself. ''I will want a mate,'' Xiu said. ''One like Artemis has... Well, perhaps I will devote myself a little less. Like October does, with Augustus.'' ''Good to have cute hatchies,'' the lair's leader proclaimed. ''All kinds of cute hatchies!'' |
At that, Andromeda cocked her head, ear-vanes in an imitation of a Fae's surprise or confusion. ''Yah?''
Xiu explained, ''I want a mate who will come with me to the nests as I am. And at each change. Not many mates, especially while I am still a Guardian, but one. And I do not think he is within this lair yet.''
Andromeda perked up. ''I find!'' she promised.
...elsewhere, doing up the accounts, Royal Midnight felt a shiver run along his antlers, and his mane stood on end from skull to tail.
==And Andromeda went to buy a dragon's contract...==
''Will you walk with me?'' the Imperial asked. He was strikingly marked, blacks and golds, complementing Xiu's own coloration.
''Of course.'' The Guardian stood and paced beside the longer Imperial. As they followed one of the well-beaten Snapper-paths that wound about the clan's central lair, she volunteered, ''Thank you for...''
Lwyn gravely bowed his head -- though not enough to imbalance him as they walked. ''I am not a demonstrative dragon. I believe I would tend to be... solitary, left to myself.''
''If you are unhappy with the proposed arrangement--'' Xiu started.
But he was shaking his head, earring swinging gently against his jaw. ''Though solitary, I suspect... I would not prefer it. In the long term. Having a companion seems like it might be better. But I do not know if I would remember to say so, often. I might take it for granted, in time.''
''Mm.'' Xiu thought quietly as they walked, and kept thinking for some time, with their claws moving along the trail that had been pounded flat by Light-in-Dark and her son Coli's wide feet. Finally, she said, ''I don't know what I will feel when I am a different sort of dragon, but right now... That seems like it might be very... Very comfortable.''
''I would not mind practicing,'' the Imperial said.
Xiu tilted her head and smiled. ''I would not mind it either.''

''I have studied the scries,'' Xiu told her mate, their necks leaning against each other. ''I don't think I should change the color of my hide until I have become something new.''
''It's earlier than you'd thought,'' the Imperial replied, his more delicate foreclaws rolling open the sketches she'd brought, painted by some of the Fae. ''I see what you mean, though.''
She put a delicate finger on the edge of one scroll to hold it steady. ''Will you mind very much?''
''It is your body,'' Lwyn murmured back. ''Should that not be the question for you to answer?''
''I'm going to become very small,'' she said. ''We will not be able to lean against each other like this.''
His mouth curled in a small smile, hard to see amid the dark patterns on his cheek. ''I am told you will probably entangle yourself in my antlers, or wind around my neck.''
''I am still a Guardian, and it concerns me now, even if I do not have a Charge. I don't want to hurt you.''
He gave her the Imperial courtesy of thinking it over, neck curved thoughtfully. ''I believe I should grow accustomed to your weight upon me. If you will remain patient with my slow consideration of matters.''
She chuckled. ''Lani was a Guardian before she was Wildclaw, did you know? I have spoken to her. Breed counts for much, but temperament carries over. Perhaps I will be a patient Spiral!''
''A sight to see!'' He sobered quickly, as he often did. ''I believe we have agreed to make a try of things, no matter the changes. I am still willing. I would not chain you to one form of beauty when you are so intrigued by another.''
''And the intermediate stages, as a Guardian, are terribly awkward?''
He ducked his head again, this time sheepisly. ''A bit, yes.''
Xiu laughed. ''I'll shift myself tomorrow, then, and you can decide if you will flee my Spiral enthusiasm then.''

''Oh, oh, they're hatching!'' Xiu said, unwinding herself from where she'd fallen asleep among the nest.
Lwyn paced over and arranged himself in a circle around their nest. ''Then we will welcome them,'' he said, indulgently.
Xiu gave him a narrow look -- tricky, with eyes as proportionally large as Spirals had. ''Are you humoring me?'' she demanded.
''Always,'' he said, and smiled at her. ''Or at least as long as you will have me for.''
''You'd better be careful,'' she warned him. ''Or that might be a long time.''
Whatever else they might have said was preempted by the cracking of an egg.
