As a hatchling, Parvaiz saw a lightning storm dancing over his homeland, and those flashes of brilliant energy stirred something deep within him. It wasn’t enough just to watch. He had to know more, to understand. So he became a meteorologist, reading the flow of the sky. He became quite good at it, and later on when he chose to move to the Sunbeam Ruins, his good reputation preceded him. Farmers asked him to predict the weather for their crops; travelers wanted to know the best times to go on journeys. Parvaiz was always a bit iffy about snow, but he could predict other kinds of weather with stunning accuracy. Rain, wind, and sun — he could pinpoint them all.As a child, he’d been electrified by a tremendous thunderstorm, and perhaps some of that electricity had crept into him. He was always crackling with energy, magnetic and charming. Many dragons found themselves drawn to him, and he made a number of friends in his new home. It was Sheol, a surgeon, who intrigued him most, however. In spite of her reserve — or perhaps because of it — Parvaiz was attracted to her. Sheol, in turn, found herself charmed by his cheerfulness and energy. It was she who introduced Parvaiz to her clan, the Disillusionists. They settled there, and though the relationship cooled off after some time, they remained friends and clanmates.

It was Parvaiz’ second mate, Noemi the Skydancer, who realized that there might be more to his abilities than simply reading the sky. As the clan’s second Wind Ambassador, she was keenly attuned to the weather and felt it shift every time Parvaiz made a prediction. Not enough to blanket a large swath of land, but just enough to bring wind, rain, or sunshine to the area Parvaiz happened to be.He insisted it was just coincidences. Noemi was suspicious, but she did feel a bit bad about doubting this earnest Spiral. He was absolutely sincere that he had no control over the weather; he read it, and maybe guessed, as best as he could.... He was such a genial fellow, even when she was needling him for answers about magic they weren’t even sure he had. Noemi had to laugh at the absurdity. She would observe him for a while longer; he was a very pleasant dragon to talk with, so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad....

Parvaiz and Noemi had children of their own, most of whom found their calling serving the Lightweaver. But to their great delight, a son, Quillan, remained in the lair, eventually starting a family of his own with Calana, the daughter of two other lairmates. The weather-workers were blessed with several grandchildren, whom they were happy to babysit while Quillan and Calana were out on business. They had established trading alliances with some clans in the Shifting Expanse, and their next two daughters, Brightshadow and Ysabine, hatched there. The children were left with their grandparents while Quillan and Calana returned to work. Then tragedy struck: The traders’ caravans were waylaid by bandits in the Tangled Wood. When the news got back to Parvaiz, it was nearly more than he could bear. His son and daughter-in-law had both been killed. Despite his own grief, Parvaiz turned his attention to his granddaughters, knowing that he had to raise them as best as he could. He was now in the middle of the most turbulent storm his life had ever known, but if one persevered long enough, eventually the sun would shine again....

Long years passed. Parvaiz’ and Noemi’s grief faded, and they raised their granddaughters together. Somewhere along the way their own romance died down, but they remained friendly with each other (and even with Sheol), and their granddaughters were a great source of joy and comfort to them.Brightshadow left the clan first. She had spent part of her childhood in the Shifting Expanse, and the Lightning magic within her stirred, tugging and beckoning. Her grandfather looked into her bright blue eyes and saw something of himself within, another dragon entranced by the power of the storm. The Lightning clan that had housed her and her parents was happy to accept her, and Parvaiz didn’t doubt that she would be all right. He gave her his blessing, and she left on a warm summer day, riding the wind to her new home. Ysabine was entranced by a different force: the currents and tides of the sea. She was apprenticed to the clan’s Master Merchant, and there was a strong possibility she would win an officer’s post aboard the Exaudi. As for Parvaiz himself, he was at peace, now that all his grandchildren were grown and able to fend for themselves. He watched Brightshadow fade into the distance...then his gaze shifted to the boundless sky. A familiar feeling stirred within him — the storm that had entranced him had never really gone; it’d just slumbered inside him for a while. And now it was waking up again. He confided this to Noemi, and she laughed, patted his arm fondly. “You know, we never did figure out if you were merely predicting the weather or causing it to change.” It was an old joke between them, and normally he scoffed at it, but now he could not be sure....Maybe it was time to find out. But not here. He had had plenty of great moments in this clan — wonder and love and even grief — and he had learned all he could from them. It was time for him to move on. He would speak with his leaders about it. Perhaps they knew of some other clans that could help him begin his next journey.... |
