Biography

Named after the Egyptian God of the Moon. Mate to Khione.

Khonsu was a tough kid, and some people appreciated that. Growing up in the competitiveness of the Tangled Wood, that was a given. From a young age, he learnt how to forage and steal food from slower rivals, often getting scolded by his mother for doing so. Khonsu often did not listen to his mother, since he thought her prudish ways were what drove his father down the tavern to drink every night. Though a drunkard, his father was not abusive, but it was not a very good example to set a young noodle. Khonsu never did develop a taste for the drink, but some of his siblings did, and that prompted infighting. Khonsu left eventually since his mother was getting on his nerves, and his siblings were becoming increasingly hostile.

He went out into the wild, joining a gang of other wayward Tangled Wood dragons. They performed petty crimes, and often got in trouble with the law. His previous skills as a cartographer (he'd loved drawing maps as a very small dragonet) went to waste for the longest time. That is, of course, when he met Khione.

Khonsu was tough on her at first, goading her, bullying her almost since he was embarrassed to like a spiral so...nice. He taught her how to be tough, and eventually the two of them fell in love after Khonsu broke off from his gang following a nasty dispute over dominance. He swore it was her determined hardiness that won him over, but she thought it was because he liked her butt.

They ended up journeying to the Viridian Labyrinth after getting tangled up in the Auction House. Khonsu started to practice his craft again to support them both. Coming to the Lair of Many References, both Khonsu and Khione decided to have hatchlings, so that some part of Khione could still return to the land she once called home. Khonsu knows how deeply Khione misses the snow, so every so often he takes her out to ice skate. They're saving their strength for the journey back to the Southern Icefield, so that, perhaps, Khione could play once more in real snow, and see her family again. Khonsu will need to gather the funds though...somehow. A cartographer's salary can only stretch so far after all. . Good thing there's help when he needs it.

210px-Khonsu.svg.png Khonsu (also Chonsu, Khensu, Khons, Chons or Khonshu) is the Ancient Egyptian god of the moon. His name means "traveller", and this may relate to the nightly travel of the moon across the sky. Along with Thoth he marked the passage of time. Khonsu was instrumental in the creation of new life in all living creatures. At Thebes he formed part of a family triad (the "Theban Triad") with Mut as his mother and Amun his father.

His name reflects the fact that the Moon (referred to as Iah in Egyptian) travels across the night sky, for it means "traveller", and also had the titles "Embracer", "Pathfinder", and "Defender", as he was thought to watch over those who travel at night. As the god of light in the night, Khonsu was invoked to protect against wild animals, and aid with healing. It was said that when Khonsu caused the crescent moon to shine, women conceived, cattle became fertile, and all nostrils and every throat was filled with fresh air.

"Khonsu" can also be understood to mean "king's placenta", and consequently in early times, he was considered to slay the king's (i.e. the pharaoh's) enemies, and extract their innards for the king's use, metaphorically creating something resembling a placenta for the king. This bloodthirsty aspect leads him to be referred to, in such as the Pyramid texts, as the "(one who) lives on hearts". He also became associated with more literal placentas, becoming seen as a deification of the royal placenta, and so a god involved with childbirth.
