written by Disillusionist Aloysius' facility with Fire magic was apparent from an early age. His forte was using it to create beautiful artworks of glass. As a young adult, he was apprenticed to a stained glass maker who was frequently commissioned to create panels for temples and shrines, and it wasn't long before he was skilled enough to strike out on his own and make a name for himself. He followed his ancestors' migratory patterns. From time to time, he'd stop at towns or lairs, where he would sometimes be commissioned. After completing his work or repairing a previous commission, he would once again go on his way. It is normally dangerous for a Snapper to travel alone, but Aloysius' mastery of Fire magic was such that he was rarely bothered. He would entrench himself and radiate intense heat so that even marauding Beastclans couldn't get close enough to attack him. Gentler travelers or creatures would park themselves some distance away, secure in the heat and warmth. Aloysius' magic protected him from most attacks, but it couldn't protect him from natural disasters. He was negotiating a steep mountain trail one day when he got caught in a landslide. He survived, albeit with heavy injuries, and was rescued by the townsfolk who lived nearby. As he would be unable to travel for some time, he took up temporary residence in the town, and while convalescing, he continued to ply his trade. He had been living in the town for some weeks when a marvelous thing happened: One spring dawn, when the sun had barely risen, he went out to begin his morning ramble. And there, at the entrance to his home, was an infant dragon. A Wildclaw, barely hatched, his orange eyes squinting against the light. The townspeople were quite confused. As far as they knew, no Wildclaws in their community had been expecting children. They put out word, but no one came forward to claim the child. Could it have been abandoned by a traveler, or had it been sired by Aloysius? The Snapper denied the last query. He had in fact not been in any relationships; he'd had neither the time nor inclination to pursue them. But neither did he turn the child away. He declared that all children were gifts from the gods, and if they had deemed him worthy of caring for this one, then so be it. It was unavoidable that this started some ugly rumors about him, but Aloysius simply didn't care. He truly believed that the gods had selected him as this child's adoptive parent, and so what others said didn't matter, for the gods were on his side. He named the child "Sagrad", for he believed that the hatchling was a divine gift, though to be honest, there were times when Aloysius felt the child was an imp sent to test his patience. Sagrad was incapable of sitting still; he bent Aloysius' rules, played truant in his lessons, and was as childish as any child could ever be. Frankly, Aloysius came very close to ripping out his own head-feathers with his claws -- and the only thing that stopped him was that he had neither head-feathers nor claws. But then he would look at the child again and remember him on the lairstep, helpless and abandoned, and his heart would soften again. And so Aloysius bore this unexpected trial with great patience. Though he was stern when he had to be (as he sometimes was with clients who didn't want to pay him for his work), more often than not he was as warm and comforting as the fire burning deep within him. He made no secret of the fact that he was not Sagrad's biological father, but such was his concern for the lad that Sagrad never thought he'd be abandoned again. The bond between them changed from simple concern to deep, familial love. In time, Aloysius healed enough to continue his travels, and Sagrad accompanied him on his journey, following the winding trails carved by Snappers who had come before them. It was while traveling that Aloysius realized he'd have to change his lifestyle again. It wasn't just that he had a child now -- his old body hadn't healed well after the accident, and traveling placed a definite strain on his muscles and bones. Sagrad would not be able to protect both of them, and anyway, that was Aloysius' duty as a father. He would need to put down roots and find a new career.... He was in the Sunbeam Ruins when he made this decision. Several clans had job openings that fit his skillset, but he was particularly attracted to one advertising for the office of Fire Representative. The clan had a good reputation for helping others with their own creative works, and Aloysius thought they might also be willing to make use of his artistic skills. He applied for the job and was swiftly accepted. He and his adopted son now reside in the Disillusionists' lair, where they work together with fellow craftsdrakes to create various works of art. Aloysius does not think he will resume traveling ever again, but he doesn't mind; he is content. If ever he should retire, he at least has Sagrad as his successor. |
