Biography

shackled_gold_thea_by_rexcaliburr-dbmj9n1.png
Vert-divider-200.png Thea had known Arkan for a very long time; as long as she was part of the Clan. Even though he was blind, he was still very sweet to the Ridgeback, never discriminating against her nor mentioning anything about her past, and she found herself unwillingly drawn to the Imperial. It wasn't until much older when she realized a few things: 1) she had fallen in love with him, and actually has been for a very long time, and 2) he... didn't seem to age.

The second thing greatly confused the kind Ridgeback. Why did he always seem the same, no matter how much time has passed? She thought back to all the time she has been in the Clan since her hatchlinghood, and he was just barely out of being a juvenile Dragon himself; or at least, she thought so. As the years gone by, however, and she grew older and matured into her present graceful self, he never changed; ever. He seemed to eternally be in the same age forever of just having become a full adult, but she's never truly questioned it, always just happy every moment she spent with him. That is, until the Fire.

It was horrible. The Library had caught on fire, bursting into a torrent of flames that engulfed the entire building, and it took everything the Clan had just to keep it contained. Thea had just reached her full adulthood when it happened, and it still darkens her dreams; the screams, the smoke, the flames like rigid apocalypse rising from below. And Arkan was there. He was helping carry debris away from the burning building so as not to have the flames spread further. Thea ran to help. And then roof collapsed, and he was caught in the fall.

It was the worst day of her life. Arkan lay somewhere, trapped, beneath the fallen rubble as other Dragons of the Clan rushed about, trying to desperately save the Clanmates they saw go inside the building, but she did not move. Not thinking of anything else, Thea cried as she dug through the rubble, calling till her voice became hoarse for the Imperial; she never got a response. When all hope seemed lost, she finally lifted a large piece of debris to reveal his face; eyes were closed, face calm and serene, as if he was simply asleep.

Thea was overjoyed. She cried with such relief as she quickly pushed the rest of the boulders out of the way. That was, until he didn't move. His chest didn't rise nor fall. And Thea felt a ton of boulders way down on her chest. Not believing a moment of it, she cried out to him, shaking him to awaken, but he never opened his eyes, and then she knew it was true. Crying her eyes out, curled up above her fallen beloved, she never noticed the approach of the other Ridgeback till she felt the claws gently lay on her shoulder. Looking up, Thea watched as Bella looked over the body of the fallen Imperial.

"He has lived many lives; he might live a few more." Thea blinked at the cryptic words, silently watching with tears streaming down her face as the Ridgeback moved towards the body and rummaged through her pouch. All around them chaos ran rampant, none of the other Clanmembers really taking notice of them as Thea continued to watch Bella take out a strange, skull-like object and press it against the Imperial's chest. The younger Ridgeback could only watch as the elder chanted strange, ear-grating words, but to her amazement Arkan's body began to be surrounded by a mist of brown magic that swirled around him for a moment, than in a flash vanished into thin air.

"...It is done," Bella said breathlessly, panting as if she just flew across all of Sornieth. Thea, however, couldn't take her eyes off of Arkan as, if by magic, his chest began to rise and fall. Realizing what that meant, she immediately ran to his side and cradled his head. Like a wish granted by the Lightweaver herself, the Imperial's eyes briefly opened, and upon seeing Thea's tear-stained yet immensely overjoyed face, smiled his kind smile before closing them again, this time in a peaceful slumber.

The thankful peace was shot-lived, however. The next day when Arkan and the other wounded were moved into the Clan's Infirmary Ward, Thea stayed by the Imperial's side the entire time, ever so thankful that he was alive but solemn as to what the other Ridgeback had explained; Bella could only resurrect one of the fallen from the fire as it took an enormous amount of energy to do so, and that Arkan had lived multiple lives. He had died many, many times already, but always came back somehow, though the reason was unclear. He never remembered any of his previous lives, and Thea took it as in exchange for bringing him back, he would forget all about her.

The thought hurt her heart, but she knew she would take anything to see his face smile at her again. When he awoke, and she saw his milky white pupils, she couldn't help but feel pain in her chest; he was blind, completely and indefinitely. Thea told Bella, telling her to bring his sight back, but she calmly explained that was due to the accident itself; it was completely out of her claws. When he awoke the next time and asked why there was no light, Thea took the calmest breath she could and with as much gentle and loving care she could, she told him how it was day time already, and the windows were open; she couldn't bear to tell him directly that he was blind.

He forgot all about her, and it might as well have been worse than death. Arkan recovered surprisingly quickly, which Bella explained one of the factors to his many lived lives, but he was completely amnesiac; he didn't remember the Clan, he didn't remember the Fire, and he had no memory of Thea. And she wished more than anything to disappear, as the pay was insufferable to see him everyday, but with his eyes covered in a white bandanna with him talking to her as if she was a complete stranger. The rest of the Clan, knowing how close she was to him, tried to reassure her that he would eventually remember, but it just made her feel worse as she knew the truth.

No matter what happened, her feelings never changed. And being in love with him made it all the more worse. Not only was he incredibly older than her - older than anyone in the Clan despite being only technically a few years older than she - he now talked to her so formally, as if they were never friends, never really close at all. And it hurt her more than she could bear. Thea still continued to visit the Imperial everyday, talking to him and acting as his support as he went through therapy to learn to live without his sight, but every moment with him was agonizing, and every moment without him there was even more so as she continually worried about his well being. Arkan was completely oblivious to her inner-conflict, that is, until she finally couldn't take it anymore.

Thea ran away. Several Months after the Fire had happened, she saw Arkan getting way to close and friendly with a female merchant that had come by to visit the Clan as he had quickly learned to use his other senses to move around, and seeing how he was clearly infatuated with her was the last straw; Thea couldn't take this anymore. Not being able to bear the thought of him being with someone else, she ran to the nearest exit and flew off, not looking back as tears streamed down her face. She flew farther than she ever had before, and as hours passed by the landscape slowly changed till she was passing over the Hewn City, but she wasn't stopping there.

Night fell, and her wings finally gave out on her as she dove down and landed in a clumsy thud, but she didn't care. No longer knowing where she was but her heart too hurt to really care, Thea curled up underneath the nearest tree and cried her heart out; she cried for her beloved, she cried for his life, and she cried most of all for the love that never was said. She doesn't know how long she laid there; she cried till she could cry no more, and laid there as the dark closed around her.

It wasn't long till she heard the wing beats. She heard a few Dragons fly past before, but she all but ignored them as she laid there, staring blankly at the ground as stray, unchecked tears continued to fall. These wings, however, hovered for a moment before she picked up the uncanny sound of a Dragon touching to the ground, but she didn't care at all; whether she died there or not was of no concern anymore, she had no reason to go on any longer.

That was what she thought till hard yet gentle claws swiftly picked her up easily as if she was a small hatchling, princess-styled. Thea squeaked in surprise; she was neither small nor light, but the Dragon didn't seem to care, and when she looked up to see who it was her heart caught into her throat; Arkan, though he couldn't see her, looked down at her as if he was gazing sightlessly into her very soul. Her heart thudded against her chest, afraid to even breathe as he just held her, not saying anything. Minutes passed by until he spoke up.

"Why did you leave?" It was simple question which should've had a simple answer; to Thea, it didn't. She physically flinched at his words which inadvertently made him squeeze his grip around her a little tighter, but just as quickly relaxed, still holding her close. Thea, breathing heavily and not being able to look at his face, swallowed thickly before turning her head and just being barely able to answer coherently.

"B-because I-I... I just wanted to..." She finished in barely a whisper, her voice the entire time getting quieter and less sure as he continued to look down at her. He remained silent for a few moments before, gripping tightly again yet not painfully, he took off with her still in his arms as he almost instinctively flew in the direction of the Clan's Lair.

Thea was equally confused, overjoyed, and freaking out. Why did he come get me? Doesn't he know he could've gotten into deep trouble if he didn't memorize the way home? Why is he carrying me? These and several other questions flowed through her mind as the heavy silence weighed down on them in the darkness of the night, the only sound the soft beating of his wings as he flew. Thea at first gently squirmed in his arms, her heart beating harder than before, but with a tight squeeze from him she instantly went still, burying her face into his chest.

Even if it is only for a moment... The flight back to the Clan came all too soon. Before she knew it, Arkan landed in front of one of the entrances to the Lair. She waited for a moment, thinking with a bit of disappointment she was going to be put down, but to her slightly happy surprise he continued to cradle her, easily walking into the dark corridors of the Lair as if he had a candle with him. Thea didn't say anything, questions just flowing through her head as he made his way back easily to the Infirmary Ward, not even pausing as he located his room. Using his tail, he opened the door and walked inside, closed the door, and set Thea onto the bed. She remained quiet as, in the dark, she heard him reach for the candle, and with a burst of magic the candle came to life; despite being blind, he still lit the candle for her.

"Why did you really leave?" He asked again, this time with a bit more of a serious yet unknown tone. She remained silent for a moments, just looking at his face which was unusually dark, and even with his eyes closed she could still feel him watching her with his other sense, a strange emotion coming from him...

"I-I told you, because I-I wanted to..." she muttered again, turning her face away; blind or not, she still couldn't face him when she spoke. Apparently, however, he was not going to take that as an answer. Thea's eyes widened as she felt his cool claws gently cup her cheek and turn her face back towards him.

"Thea... I know you have been avoiding me lately... And you seem more and more distant..." He said with a tone that made her breathing hitch. She continued to remain silent as he paused before going on. "Now, what is the real reason you left...?"

"I... Because I love you!" Thea blurted out, but felt instant regret; she had no intention of saying the words that had been lodged into her heart all this time, but she couldn't help it. And now, that she had said them aloud, she just burst into a sobbing mess, muttering 'sorry' over and over again. And then she wrapped in a warm embrace.

"...You finally said it," Arkan muttered softly as he pulled her close to his chest, hugging as deeply as he could and wrapping his wings around her lithe body. Thea sat frozen in his hold for a full few seconds as she comprehended his words, and, not being able to let her heart lie any longer, she hugged him back, crying into his shoulder as he soothingly murmured sweet words to her, just as she had done for him so long ago.

But now, she wasn't afraid of being alone any longer.
shackled_gold_lux_by_rexcaliburr-dbm06s6.png Thea is an incredibly kind and friendly Ridgeback with a heart of pure gold. With a talent for sketching, Thea spends her day in the Clan's gardens, sketching all of the plants, buildings, and Familiars she sees, but she especially loves to sketch Dragons. She loves to sketch new Dragons and Familiars she meets, making friends with them as best as she possibly can. Despite her memories of her hatchlinghood haunting her, Thea always puts up the pretense she has long since accepted, though it bothers her clanmates at times when they see her alone, staring at the sky with a forlorn look in her chocolate eyes. Even so, Thea almost never talks about it, having decided she's just fine as the Clan is more family to her then she ever has known before, loving each of them dearly.

Hardihood hadn't been to the Wanderer's Nexus in a while, and the pearlcatcher had looked forward to reconnecting with his family. The joy of reunion soon changed to dismay when he learned that his father had cheated on his mother and had sired hatchlings with another. Hardy prided himself on his ability to survive in any environment, but tense social situations were a different sort of hazard entirely, and he soon found himself longing for dangerous terrains, poisonous plants, wild beasts...any of those would be preferable to dealing with his family's drama.

There was little he could do to assuage his mother Honesty's anger and grief. Never having been involved romantically with anyone, he couldn't fathom the maelstrom of emotion that kind of betrayal would engender. His father, Afi, was dealing with grief of a different kind - the guilt of having children he couldn't openly acknowledge, as Hardy's two half-sisters were Unholy Wanderers and weren't allowed in the Nexus. Maei, his father's ridgeback lover, didn't want to raise them on the dangerous streets, but there were as many emotional dangers for them in and around the Nexus as physical ones. If he found such an environment toxic and difficult to handle, surely it was the wrong place for two impressionable hatchlings who only wanted to be loved and feel safe.

He reached out to his little sisters, but they were slow to trust, already jaded by the attitudes of the adults around them. The pearlcatcher was patient, though. He wanted them to survive and, with any luck, to find happiness somewhere. "I know of other clans," he told them. "I can take you to places that will foster you, new homes that will love you." Not Prufrock, he thought to himself. There were too many strange events going on in the place he laired in between his travels. He tried to teach them to play, for they were too serious, and as they made a stilted attempt, he observed their personalities, thinking of the other clans he knew. One for Light, and one for Shadow. He told them tales he had heard of Clan Paladin and Condor's Hollow as they grew more comfortable with playing, and he promised to guide them home.

Hardy left the Nexus with one sister crouched between his wings on his back and the other curled around his neck. He departed with relief rather than regret, with sadness for the parents he left behind and hope for the little sisters he carried, and he made a wish that all his family would have safe journeys as they navigated the physical and emotional paths of their lives.
