“A strong woman looks at a challenge in the eye and gives is a wink."

Any pirate captain knows that for the position of Master Gunner, you need someone who can command respect, can keep the weapons in order and great care (for they are used often on a pirate ship), as well as inspire the crew without stepping on the toes of the Captain and First Mate. Rozii perfectly fits that role. Growing up on the edge of the sea in a blacksmith’s shop, Rozii was trained hard in order to be fit to take over her father’s legacy. Captains from the Navy relied on his craftsmanship, and eventually hers. Though young, she was skilled and smart. Under her father’s tutelage, she was able to craft weapons that the seafolk would be able to rely on.
To keep herself entertained while working the forge, she’d sing to herself quite often. Rozii’s father enjoyed the her songs, as did the customers. Many people in the harbor would visit the shop to hear her sing and inspect her work. One such customer was a famous swordsman by the name of Nathan. Unable to pay in coin, he offered to give Rozii training in the weapons that she crafted. She had some training, but it was informal. Rozii’s father accepted the offer, and sent her to Nathan for formal training. She proved a quick study, but Nathan was not infamous for nothing. Often after their training, left exhausted, Nathan would ask Rozii for a song. At first she found his request silly and didn’t agree. However, he never gave up after each session and after a month of training, she finally caved in. If he won a match, she’d sing anything his heart desired; lullabies and tavern songs were often his favorites.
Nathan was finding himself increasingly aware of his affection for Rozii. She was popular with the people of the harbor, her skill earned her respect of the other craftsman, and her voice was soothing to the ear. Several times he tried to win her over, but she declined him and told him to focus on their lessons. Trying to woo her, he dodged her blade (as she often forgot to protect her blind spot) and kissed her cheek. Flustered and confused, he swooped in and took her lips for himself and pushed her down, trying to pin her to the ground. In the brief moment of them falling, Rozii was able to pull her boot knife up and held it against his throat. Nathan backed away slowly, releasing her. She sheathed the blade, fixed her shirt and glared at him. Rozii was done with her lessons.
That evening, Rozii went to the local tavern, though still too young to drink. The bartender looked at her for a moment before giving her a pint of something sweet. Sipping her brew, she looked about her and found a golden woman dressed in black. Their eyes met and the woman came forward. She turned out to be Captain Juliet, and she was in search of crew members. A pirate ship called the Wild Sirens was a fierce vessel of strong individuals, and they needed someone who was skilled in weaponry. Without saying goodbye to her father, and the only witness the barkeep, Rozii left her life behind to become Juliet’s Master Gunner. Unsettled by the events leading up to her attack, Roz also left her voice behind. That is until one drunken night in a land far away from the graces of Nathan, she belted out tavern tunes with her shipmates. Surprised by her ability, they convinced her to sing throughout the night. Now she’ll sing when the crew is anxious, or she’s completely intoxicated, but no other time. Perhaps one day she’ll sing as freely as she did as a child, but time will have to heal the scars as well.

____Rozii was still young, hardly a teenager when the captain of The Enchantress hired her aboard. She worked every job before given permission to the weapons, and months on the sea were rough, but as she dreamed they’d be. She would often be found leaning against a rope, watching the water with great pleasure. The stories sailors had told her gave her an honest depiction of the life she had chosen. Still, the crew was still wary of her. She was young, and was thought that she’d run away with the first boy she met. Not wanting to say anything about their captain’s judgement, they decided to let the teen’s actions speak for themselves.
____The first time they docked since they left her port, Rozii was entranced. It was more of a city than a town, and everyone was running everywhere. Messengers were sprinting down hidden alleyways to bypass the traffic, people calling out to her for their goods (much as she did in her younger years), and little kids trying to get close to her pockets. One such child reached in her coat, but found nothing except a hand on his wrist. He looked up, fearing for the worst, and instead got a wink, and a silver coin pulled out from some unknown place. He was shocked as Rozii let go of his hand, rubbed his head, and then shooed him off. His companions were not so lucky, as many of them were chewed out and thrown away.
____Captain Juliet took the lead, walking through the throng of people without effort. They parted before her, some out of fear, a few more out of respect, but most in a hurry to get somewhere else. Rozii kept up as best she could, losing her captain only once before finding her again and pushing people aside to stick close. A few shouts earned a few glares, but many scoffed at the young teen in return. Juliet led her crew into a tavern, The Swaggering Penguin. However, a man standing at the door picked Rozii up by the scruff of her neck and looked her in the eye. Before he threw her to the street, she gave him a smile, he didn’t notice the blade at his throat until he felt a slight trickle of blood run down his neck. Wiping it off, he set her down to the ground and she put her blade away. For it was not often a person caught him of guard, let alone a young lady, he let her in.
____The barkeep, having watched the scene through the partly opened door, he saw she was quick. A good thing in a place like this. Another gal her age had convinced the guard to let her in, but her tactics were not seen. Rozii sat at the bar and was handed a mug without a question having to be asked. After all, she was here to drink. It didn’t take Rozii long to find the other girl her age. The pale beauty was chatting some unsuspecting fool out of his wallet, however, Rozii wasn’t the only witness. Another man came from a corner, finishing his mead in a gulp, and came to his friend’s rescue. He pulled the purse from her pocket, grabbing her wrist and pulled her face close to his. With the stink of his drink on his breath, Marsh, as she would be later as known, took her own pint and smashed it into his face.
____There was a moment of shock that silenced the tavern. Unusual as it was, the guard peeked in in just enough time to witness a brawl begin. The the friend’s nose broken in several places, tears and blood mixing on his cheeks as he crouched low to the ground, the once smitten man now raised a fist to Marsh. He wasn’t quick enough, for she was able to duck and move to his side. Instead the fist collided with a man’s jaw. He stood slowly, his form towered over them, his broad shoulders tattooed with names that were crossed out it, scar tissue ran down his arms. The tall man reached back and pummeled his attacker, he flew back into another, who then spilled his drink on the man in front of him. Soon the whole tavern was in a brawl as fights started between half-drunk men easily. Marsh, not wanting to be excluded in the fray she started, the young teen embedded her knuckles into a bearded fellow. Juliet watched the scene unfold, and noticed when she looked to her right, Rozii was gone as well. Searching the crowd for her, she found the young girl laughing at a man as he tried to grab her and she cartwheeled out of his reach.
____Rozii cartwheeled into the towering man, and hit him like one hits a solid wall. A loud “Omphf” escaped her lips and as she looked up he stared down at her. The man chasing her grabbed the distracted Rozii by her ponytail, pulled her to his chest, and pinned her arms behind her back. As the man pulled her away, she kicked her legs, hitting the tall tattooed man in the chest, and pushing her assailant to the floor beneath her. Not too pleased to be used as a springboard, the giant picked Rozii up by the ankle and tossed her into a shaggy looking man trying to hold a combative Marsh, freeing her. The two teens looked at each other and a mutual respect was formed.
____Rozii stood up and reached out her, Marsh, gripping the other girl’s forearm, pulled herself up with a grin. The man, beaten with the pint and rewarded with a broken nose for getting to close, finally stood up. Rage consumed him, and Juliet watched the distracted girls get locked on by the man. He lunged forward, his knife at the ready. Neither was prepared for the weapon, and parted out of the way of his blade just in time. Until this time, there was unspoken vow that the tavern fights would be bare-handed combat. The frustrated man broke that rule, and the girls took it upon themselves to right his wrong. As he rushed through them, the girls turned, reaching out and grabbing his coat. They yanked him back, and with their combined strength threw him across the bar. Past Capt. Juliet and the rest of the Wild Sirens, past the barkeep who was cleaning the cups, and into the opposite wall, his knife out of reach.
____The two picked up the disheveled man and threw him out of the tavern into the center of the street. The original victim hurried after him, giving him a shoulder and walked away with both pride and body hurt. When the teens returned inside, the men had started to settle down. After the commotion with the knife, the men began to settle. After all, spilling blood without reason was frowned upon, but doing so in the city would get one arrested for the night. Things could be settled elsewhere, and the tavern kept as a peacekeeping place between the men and women of the sea. Several people bought drinks for those they had beaten up, shared a drink and a laugh. The towering man came and even ruffled Rozii’s head, though he did not make eye contact and left after he placed a pint in front of her.
____Rozii gave the pint to Marsh, who then took a large swig. They smiled at each other, and Marsh took Rozii’s arm. Surprised, the young gal took notice that she hadn’t completely escaped the blade, her coat was stained with blood. She rolled up the sleeve and winced, peeling at a large cut that ran up her arm for adrenaline had kept her from noticing the pain before. Before Rozii was able to rip her pant leg to cover, Marsh poured the ale over the wound. Rozii cried out in surprise of the burning sensation, but her new friend quickly pulled thread and a needle out of her pocket. With skilled hands Marsh carefully threaded the needle, and then sterilized it in a candle flame. The barkeep gave the injured girl a rag to bite down on as Marsh sewed her up, having seen this scene plenty of times before. Quickly the pale beauty closed the wound and wrapped it up with gauze. Capt. Juliet stood up at last and placed her hands on each of the girl’s shoulders. Rozii looked between the two and smiled, for it wasn’t long after that when The Enchantress set sail, Marsh too was on board.
