Among the first dragonkind created by the Shadowbinder were those that sought the Shade. The darkness clung to them in a way that it didn’t to others. It whispered to them, lured them in. Changed them. Floating, always, nearby. It was dangerous. It stole them away from Sornieth, away from the deity that made them. Up and up they flew, further than any have tried before, further than should have been possible. They carried nothing with them. No tool to help. The Shade protected them. It distorted them. When they entered the vacuum of space, the darkness filled their lungs and held on. It permeated their body so that life existed where life should not. After a while, the Shade tired of its games. It stopped whispering promises, it loosened its hold. But the part it gave away stayed with the dragons. It mutated with them. It stopped them from ever returning to what they knew before. Some didn’t care. The darkness had awakened a part of them that yearned for destruction, that welcomed chaos and darkness. But some couldn’t bear to look upon Sornieth and know that they could never travel back. So they travelled to the far reaches of the universe to forget. To distant planets whose existence was unknown. Others ended their journey on the moon, where they could gaze upon the world they left behind. There they settled, hurting in their knowledge but unable to tear themselves away. And there life moved on. The colony of dragons grew, and primitive beginnings gave way to a strong civilization ruled by royalty. Years and years passed, and efforts to return to Sornieth dwindled as the inhabitants gradually forgot their true home. Eventually, stories of a life beyond the moon became simply stories. That was the world Zelenia hatched into. That was where she grew and played. She was born into a world that had forgotten Sornieth as reality. She was born into a world that spoke of it as a fairy tale, a myth. Where the royal families thought it not worth their time to think about, where they believed that it should stay the musings of a hatchling, and not a grown dragon. She was born a princess. She was born an anomaly. Because she devoured any and all readings she could find about it. Because she believed in it with her whole heart. Because sometimes, when she sat in the maria on the moon, those spots of darkness that magma floods had left behind, she thought she could hear voices. Those of a dragon called the Tidelord, and a dragon called the Flamecaller. |
