Biography
Irwin the Mire Hunter in its natural environment Theme: Wildest Things in the World |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Birch was enormous, a threatening presence to most animals, which explained his approach to animals. He was never sneaking up on anything. The toridae watched them from the water, enormous amber eyes placidly following them as they walked along the shore. “This is a surprisingly nice place you have here,” Birch said. Irwin snorted. “Surprising? What’s so surprising about it? It’s as natural as I could get it. You don’t get this anywhere but the wild.” Birch laughed. “You forget, the majority of my time is spent inside a tent these days. With civilization. And, this place is called the mire for a reason. It’s not really a nice place to just… stay.” “It is for her.” Irwin nodded toward the toridae and sat at the edge of the water. He flicked the tip of his tail tuft into the water for a moment, and withdrew it. The toridae was wise to Irwin’s antics, and didn’t respond. “Hm.” Birch joined Irwin at the water, but didn’t sit. His wings, half-extended in a relaxed position, shaded Irwin from the majority of the beating sun. He was a mobile umbrella for everything around him but himself. Irwin wasn’t sure he liked it. “Yes, I don’t doubt it’s a good place for toridae. The heat, humidity, water… it all helps them maintain their body temperature. It’s really a wonder of biology, don’t you think? Dragons, on the other hand?” At Birch’s momentarily enthusiasm over the toridae’s unique adaptions to live in its own space, Irwin grinned. “You’re not suggesting I change my lifestyle? Look at me, this isn’t just my job. It’s my life. I love it here.” Birch chuckled, a deep throaty grumble. “Hm. Yes. Me, too.” |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Irwin grew up in the treacherous territory called the Shrieking Wilds in Nature territory, which dragons share with dangerous creatures like stranglers, pohips, and florons. His home and childhood taught him respect and love for his wild neighbors that he kept into his adulthood. Eventually, he would say it was his life to learn about these creatures, and protect them. Nature is not something to fight against, but to live with. He learned how these creatures lived and taught others about them. He traveled the world to find more beautiful animals. At the meeting point of Plague, Shadow, and Water territory, a dangerous land known as the “mire” is home to creatures such as toridae and wartoads. Irwin “adopted” this area as his own, encouraging responsibility in its use and respect for its creatures and dangers. Irwin is the most unorthodox hunter among the Chase. He knows everything there is to know about the creatures of the mire, from the toridae to the croaker, better than anyone. Even the Tempest Chase, monster hunters, started to recognize that sometimes it was better to relocate pests than to destroy them. Of course, they didn’t know when or how or where. After all, they knew that Gladeveins Needleteeth didn’t belong in the Steppes, but didn’t know where they actually belong. When Irwin agreed to partner with them for this purpose, the Tempest Chase agreed that they would make more efforts to understand the creatures they were removing. Even though a dragon doesn’t understand the purpose of a creature, the creature still serves some essential purpose in the dragon’s world. Now that Irwin spends the majority of his time educating other dragons, he only rarely finds himself home. He travels with the Tempest Chase for their protection (though he does well enough keeping himself out of trouble), and gets back to his preserve as often as he can. Some years he only spends a month there or less. But, as Irwin says, life is short, too. He gets to do his favorite thing, all the time: learning, exploring, and teaching. Other dragons only wish they could be so lucky. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
When called to destroy an unusually large toridae in the waterways beneath a city on the river between Nature and Earth, Irwin convinced the Chase to remove the creature instead. The toridae was a nuisance to dragons entering her territory, and, with any luck, they could change the toridae’s territory. Naming the toridae Bindi, Irwin set up a reserve for creatures he hoped to relocate in the future, and was forced to spend some of his time maintaining the reserve. Not that he doesn’t enjoy it, of course. He loves spending time with his animals, even if, like Bindi, they’re not so sure about spending time with him. |
━━ clan ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Irwin knew that if he wanted to teach anybody anything, he should probably get some sort of learning done himself, if for no other reason than to learn how to teach. While out learning to do just that, he met a lovely Imperial named Elincia. They hit it off, and he learned that, even though she was apparently a princess of some kind, she was just as scrappy and interested in the outdoors. While he was a champion of the animals without a voice, Elincia was for the Beastclans. They both wanted to learn about these creatures that many dragons didn’t take time for. Why not do it together? |
Saving a planet full of animals would be a lot to do alone, but fortunately Irwin has plenty of friends to help. Dragons like Kurth are not educators like Irwin is, but Kurth’s more solitary ways are still helpful in the effort to save the animals sitting square in the path of dragon expansion. While Kurth prefers to educate dragons by putting injured and displaced creatures in dragons’ care, Irwin prefers to relocate. But then, Irwin can think of little better way to learn about a creature than to be forced to take care of it. |
Birch joined the Tempest Chase to one-part find his Charge and one-part join Irwin in his work to save endangered creatures. While Irwin must remain close by his reserve in the mire and Kurth serves as more a familiar-tamer than animal-saver, Birch serves as a wildlife advisor to the Chase. While Irwin and Kurth enjoy getting their hands dirty in the fields, Birch is more of a scholar, documenting all he knows about animals for future generations of dragons. The three spend much time together compiling their knowledge. |
━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Irwin’s surname is Outback. » » Though he surely wears ordinary clothing on ordinary days when he’s not roughing it in the brush, he’s known for wearing his leathers. It’s just as likely he wears the same outfit at all times. » » Irwin’s enthusiasm for animals carries over to other parts of his life: everything he does, he gives his all. As consequence, he has become an excellent public speaker, a great world-traveler, and a respectable haggler. The only things he’s not good at are the things he’s never tried. |
aesthetic: Irwin wears rough and wearable leathers to work with animals. He loves animal patterns (as long as they remain on the original animal) and natural textures like bark and sand. |
likes: work, animals, exploring, teaching, watching, imitating bird calls, wrestling toriddae dislikes: irresponsible treatment of wildlife, missing opportunities _________________________________________________________ |
