Biography
Jewlerymaker
Origins
Despite all attempts at research and study, the true cause of the Jewelry Box Fae phenomenon is unknown. Legend has it that a particularly vain Fae was so in love with the sparkling gems in their jewelry collection that when they died, their soul inhabited their favorite ring and brought it to life. Thus, the first Jewelry Box Fae was born.
And indeed, Jewelry Box Fae frequently manifest following the death of the dragon who owned them, though this is not a hard and fast correlation. And no matter the breed of the owner, the animated gems always appear Fae. Whether this is because of the legend, because Fae are the smallest breed, or some other reason, we may never know for sure.
We only know this:
Only jewelry with gemstones set in metal become Jewelry Box dragons
The Jewelry Box dragon is always Fae
Jewelry Box Fae are extremely rare. After all, most jewelry doesn't somehow magically turn into a dragon. But their presence has been noted for ages. Surely the first dragons whose jewels came to life were alarmed, and history tells of several who smashed their former jewelry into sparkling pieces in their fright. But as rumors and legends spread, dragons began referring to them as Jewelry Box Fae, seeing as they are Fae born from the jewelry boxes of unsuspecting dragons. Now, while certainly an unexpected surprise to any dragon, their rumors have spread wide enough that most just let the Jewelry Box Fae be.
Just like jewelry adorns a dragon, many clans have taken to letting Jewelry Box Fae live in and around their lair as decoration. Because they are so vacant, they are unobtrusive as clanmates, quite content to sit around looking pretty and not much else.
Characteristics
Jewelry Box Fae appear to be mute and emotionless. Living Fae find them eerie for the lack of expressive movement in their crests. But this doesn't mean Jewelry Box Fae are unmoving; while many do seem to prefer imitating the inanimate objects from which they were born, others seem to be in constant subtle motion, letting their wings flutter just so so the sparkling gemstone of their wings catches the light.
Being made of metal and mineral, Jewelry Box Fae have hard, sturdy bodies and are not easily injured. However, can get bent and scratched, just like real jewelry. They also seem to have unusually large magic reserves for a Fae, though no dragon has ever observed them putting it to use. It is believed that this magic is in fact what sustains them, allowing them to live in the appearance of a dragon in the first place, and that if they were to ever expend that magic, they would return to being normal jewelry.
