You will know my name.

There is a danger in the waters of the south. A presence that gives northern sailors pause before they turn their vessels towards the furthest reaches of the world. The winds and seas are fouler there, harsher and more unforgiving, it's true. Steel-grey seas rise and roil like molten lead beneath a grim grey sky the colour and texture of hammer-beaten iron, and the wind is cruel, picking cold fingers between the cracks in clothes.

And yet it is not nature that gives sailors and captains reason to reconsider voyages southward, but dragons. Some say they are more beast than dragon, less cultured even than some of the northern beastclans. Tales of ruin and murder circulate, carried on southerly winds like the very storms of the Icewarden himself. And of course, most of the tales originate with the dragons that dwell in the ice caves of Clan Windfall, though some of them are true. They are pirates, true as the steel these dragons carry at hips and in hands, true as the stars they navigate by. And pirates, of course, profit from swift surrenders.

Even among the pirates of Clan Windfall there are the mighty and the less so. There are captains so terrible that their names are oft spoken only in hushed voices, the mention of whom turns brave, proud dragons to quiet, cowed, contrite citizens. Maille's family originates from a crew feared by many many drakes, and she was born with fire in her belly. Some of her elder siblings went on to ride simply on the coat-tails of their extravagant father, their famed, vicious mothers. Not so she. Maille was determined: her name would be known. Perhaps people would name her Zymen and Corsa's daughter, but so too would they know her name. And she would not return home until her parents heard word of her deeds and exploits, until she made them proud. She would travel the world and be granted audience with queens and kings, lords and ladies. She would respect no borders, and none would be spared who failed to surrender to her black and red banner: a dragonskull side by side with an hourglass.
