Light is a handsome and popular young male with a tendency to dress formally. He's a hardworking genius with a sense of justice just like his father, though he is quite prideful due to his intellect and the constant praise from others in his life. Light's ability to plan ahead and thinking through possible scenarios made things seem like a game of chess at times. Still, being so intelligent compared to others in his school- not to mention the classes in general- bored him. Everything was always the same. He easily stayed ahead despite his thoughts drifting off occasionally in class; his plans for the future, thoughts on justice, and how rotten the world was becoming with injustice and crime.

It wasn't long until something... strange happened. It all started with a black note book with the words 'Death Note' on the cover. Light didn't believe the book was anything less than a prank, though it had seemingly dropped out of nowhere. At first nothing seemed different and he went home and studied like usual. The notebook's mysterious presence however compelled him to investigate further. The rules inside the Death Note seemed to be almost too go to be true. This had to be a prank but to be sure he'd have to test it out. It wasn't that hard to decide what type of person to test it on; criminals. Light turned on the news and wrote down the name of the man on the screen, keeping the criminal's face in mind as he did so. Thirty seconds later the man died of a heart attack just like the rules had stated. Light couldn't believe the power he now held.

A shinigami named Ryuk showed up soon after Light started using the Death Note. However, he wasn't shocked by the supernatural god of death. If anything he saw Ryuk as an opportunity to help with his plans and to gain information. Perhaps with a shinigami at his side Light could become a god of this world and take the burden of dealing out righteous justice upon the criminals and scum that were causing the rot. After all, despite Ryuk dropping the notebook for him to find out of boredom; Light knew he was the only one who would- who could- do anything about the injustice. So despite his initial hesitations on using the Death Note, he began setting out on a new course to become the world's judge and jury for justice.

He soon started to become corrupted by his newfound power and became cold and ruthless towards criminals and those who might get in his way. Light wasn't a fool though; he made sure to cover his tracks and keep the Death Note a secret from everyone- especially his father. But his kills started adding up and he had to get involved. L. The man didn't even have a name. Just a letter. Light hated falling for the trap with Tailor- the location was already narrowed down to the Kanto region thanks to it- and knew he'd have to be extra careful with his plans. Thankfully, Ryuk warned him when cameras were placed in his house to monitor for suspicious activity as well as a detective following him for a few weeks and Light was able to figure out a way to continue killing while also making everything seem completely normal. Ryuk was relieved he could eat apples once the cameras were removed though.


Suspicions were still on him but Light managed to kill them off without giving away who he was. Everything was fine, he'd even infiltrated the investigation and met his rival, L. He was aware the strange young man was suspicious of him but everything was still going according to plan... or it was until a second Kira showed up. Light was aggravated that they might expose both of them with their recklessness but in the end he managed to gain a completely loyal follower: Misa aka second Kira and her shinigami Rem- the latter was over protective of Misa however. Light knew he'd have to be careful around the female shinigami. Still, now he had two Death Notes and a new 'girlfriend' to use as a cover for his real motives. All the power seemed to be in his field for now... he just had to make sure L didn't figure anything out. In this game of wit one slip up would kill the loser.

At one point the two Kira gave up their Death Notes and memories to fool L further and Light finally had L in check mate after managing to get the memories back. Afterwards he instructed Misa to trade half her lifespan for the shinigami eyes once more to see L's real name. It put her shinigami Rem into a position where she would either have to let Misa die or to sacrifice her own self to save Misa. As Light expected, Rem chose the latter choice. He'd taken out L, Watari, Rem and was now taking over the investigation in L's place. Covering his tracks as being Kira.

Then Near and Mello came to stop him. They were from the same place as L but definitely didn't use L's methods. Light's opponents were divided and he began 'working' with Near but knew he'd have to kill him soon. He was already getting too close to the truth. Soichiro managed to set that back as he died- using the shinigami eyes to confirm Light had a lifespan- and also managed to say Mello's real name. Light could finish off Mello but knew to bide his time. Doing it too soon would arouse suspicion.

Near was far from easy to take down but Light knew cunning and patience won out in the end. He selected a spokesperson to spread the word of Kira and gave him the Death Note with modified rules about needing to kill. However, it wasn't enough. Near was still suspicious of him so Light had Misa cause distractions with her Death Note. Once Takada became a user of the Death Note Light approached her, revealing he was Kira, and had his devoted follower create a fake notebook for a plan to have Near unknowingly swap the Death Notes.

It didn't end like that though. Near ended up with the real Death Note and in panic Light revealed himself to be Kira to the task force. Realizing he was caught, Kira gave a manical laugh and explained his ideal world to them... not that they cared. Matsuda shot him several times. Misa wasn't there and his follower Mikami couldn't use the fake. The only thing Kira had to escape was the chance Mikami gave him upon stabbing himself with a pen. Even Ryuk hadn't helped when he'd asked. The shinigami merely reminding him that he didn't take sides; he was there for entertainment. That was when Light knew his death was fast approaching.

Ryuk wrote two words in his Death Note: Light Yagami. Light died soon after in a warehouse he'd managed to run and escape to. His wounds and the Death Note sealing his fate. But a person who dies after using a Death Note couldn't go to Heaven or Hell. Perhaps he would have a second chance- granted in a different form- to bring justice.
