STORY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Cheerful and pleasant, Helix is a charming dragon; so well-mannered and his dress always immaculate, he puts a lot of emphasis on his presentation. He prefers when folks think well of him. And while his exterior is respectable, he’s no less intelligent for that. A well-read dragon, Helix thinks of himself as an academic. Unlike Pencil, however, he doesn’t also feel that he’s too good for the rest of the (less well-read) clan.

He’s warm and friendly, open and probably a little too trusting; the perfect dragon to deliver post. He even whistles. Whether the letter is to be sent to a dragon within the lair, or if it’s leaving, Helix and his harpy aides are swift and efficient messengers. But letters only leave the clan after Pencil has proofread them. Obviously. Helix does much of the travelling himself, especially when he doesn’t know if the recipient clan is Beastclan friendly. Detac, his first assistant, makes sure he isn’t run off his feet though. The harpy is perfectly happy making any job Helix can’t, or dislikes, is taken care of. Helix’s familiar, Kritch, is the only one almost always at the post office, watching over things and making sure no one touches anything they shouldn’t.

As he’s such a kind, approachable dragon, Helix has much less trouble making friends than his mate. Pencil might be firmly of the belief that her intellectual prowess makes her better than others, but Helix wants to actively share his knowledge. Between delivering mail, he does his best to tutor others – not just hatchlings, but adults too – on how to best present themselves to make a good impression. He fails a lot, but he has made plenty of good connections. Winter plays chess with him now (he misses Exarch, though he is probably the only dragon who does) and they chat about all sorts of theories and puzzles. Sometimes Jaelyr or Tahvi might stop by the post office to discuss something, and there are plenty of others in the lair who think of him fondly too.

He doesn’t resent the ones who aren’t interested in academia. After all, Chevron might not know the entire history of the Hewn City, but Helix can’t pick a lock. He’s perfectly willing to accept that some folks are smart at other things. (But that doesn’t mean he thinks it’s fine for Chevron to wear a skull on his face.) He loves his family, the whole mismatched lot of them. He would never have thought to find such kindness in the dark of the Woods. It’s sweeter, he thinks, for being so unexpected.

OTHER

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ORIGIN / Helix’s clan was nomadic, typical for Wind dragons, really. They never stayed in one place long and that was enough to sate the wanderlust in most of them. Some still came and went of course, but not as many as other clans they met in their travels. Helix had just reached adolescence, his first time flying without a guide in fact, when he found himself hopelessly lost. His mother had warned him of the whirling air currents and storms he’d never see coming. But gaining his wings had been so exciting that he couldn’t help himself. The winds carried him half way across Sornieth before they petered out. And, what with his family being nomadic, he had very little chance of finding them. Nor they him in the vast world. So he kept going.

Fact / Somewhat unusually for a Wind dragon, Helix never had any interest in travelling. Not a homebody, he just always really liked the idea of settling down in a clan and having a family; he didn’t even need to have children, just a group of dragons he could think of as home. He considers himself very lucky for not only finding that family, but also having a mate, and the opportunity to see other places. His favourite part of his job is always seeing the canyon come into view, though.

Likes / Helix has a truly obnoxious collection of chess figures. He loves to play and has full sets, including matching boards, in many varieties. Those little clockwork inventions Yesterday used to make he also finds extremely interesting; he ‘saved’ a number of them when she left. He’s also very invested in his presentation; he likes to make a good first impression.

Dislikes / Liars and cheats (especially when it comes to games); Helix puts a lot of emphasis on being polite and honest and anyone who is deceptive he frowns at disapprovingly.

Interests / While not strictly speaking his area, Helix loves children and acts as Inerri’s help in the hatchery. Firmly of the opinion that everyone deserves an education, he assists with teaching them basics, from literacies and numbers, to geography and history. Not just the dragon kids either, but also the Federation’s young ones. Some take to learning more than others, but that’s fine, academia isn’t for everyone.
