Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,

Keep quiet no longer,
We'll sing through the day,
Of the lives that we've lost,
And the lives we've reclaimed. xx

--Hatchling on Ice--

Born in the frosty climate of the Icewarden’s domain, Reign was left to fend for himself for the majority of his adolescence, a task he found difficult surrounded by blinding white when his own coloration stood out in stark contrast. The little hatchling’s best efforts at blending in came when he was willing to risk the perils of expanses of black ice that allowed him to slip quietly in the shadows to stalk prey or avoid conflicts he wasn’t sure he could win. In order to survive this way, Reign became quieter and faster than most other hatchlings his age, his sure footed travels literally a life or death experience each time.

His abilities drew notice of a different kind, however, and Reign soon found himself with promises of a more secure future in exchange for his service. His ability to move silently and carefully over the most volatile terrain made slipping in and out of more densely populated areas that much easier, and for the next few years of his life, his worth was measured in carefully removed items, returned to an unseen benefactor in random locations. His collecting took him closer and closer to the Fortress of Ends, the ominous spires looming closer and closer, an unspoken final test.

The ultimate goal for otherwise unwanted hatchlings like him, of course, was to test their mettle against the secrets of the Fortress itself. If any returned alive, Reign didn’t know, but it didn’t take much reasoning to know that the vast majority did not. The risk was worth it to his benefactors, of course, as their own lives were never in jeopardy, and any returning adventurer was a success that outweighed the paltry cost of their service while preparing them for such a task.

Eventually, Reign’s directions came, his task set…and he used his years of training to do what he’d never done before. He let himself be lost when he knew he would not be missed. So many never returned, several like himself, he suspected, purposefully. Unwilling to face nearly certain death in the icy tombs that were said to have encased even gods themselves, Reign ran, not stopping until he was nearly a world away, safe in shadows that far better suited everything he’d ever known.

--The Shadowed Spymaster--

Though Ophan almost immediately found the young wildclaw exceptional, his introduction to the clan was not entirely without confusion or hesitation. Though his skill set was clear, several clan members were somewhat incredulous at the idea that a dragon from such a bright, open region might be better able to navigate the shadows than those native to the area. Initially, even Ophan’s right hand, Tesla, was reserved in her dealings with Reign, little more than a refugee who continued to insist on his amazing abilities. Despite being soft spoken and rarely going out of his way to say much of anything at all, Reign never wavered on the range of his expertise, determined to make something of himself within a clan that he could protect himself within. He doubted his past would ever return for him, but he had not survived as long as he had on ignoring possibilities.

Tesla proved to be the iron clawed general she was known to be in her early interactions with Reign as well, testing him to the extent of his abilities, both those he claimed to possess and those he admitted he had little experience in. Over time, he realized this was her way in investing herself in his success, though he reached many an early morning exhausted and sore on the tail end of one of her spur of the moment training regimes. His quiet stubbornness seemed to pay off, however. For every day he silently completed the tasks set before him, his esteem within the clan grew. When he finally was given the chance to come before what made up the council at the time, it was both to congratulate him, and to ask him what information he’d no doubt gathered during his stay. His perception was impressive, and this marked the beginning of the information web he was given more and more leeway over as time went on, giving him the ability to monitor information coming in and out of the clan, the surrounding areas, and, importantly for him, any news of dragons from other realms coming in and out of the territory.

Over the course of his early involvement within the council, Reign was also part of Tesla’s surprising decision not to become the clan matriarch, as she also took him as her official mate at that time, though their relationship remains open, and he remains on friendly terms with both Ophan and the current matriarch, Corrinne. He's well liked within the clan as a whole also, his personality surprisingly mellow and kind considering the intrigue associated with his duties as Spymaster, and the abrasive nature of his mate.
