The sun beats down with all its shining might, but its blows fail to crack open the shell of darkness that is the forest, branches and vines all woven together into an impenetrable wall. Near the crowns of the trees, senses are assaulted; you hear wind rush past and the songs of birds blend into incessant cacophony. Down below it's another matter, a different sort of attack. Among the lower reaches of the trees, silence reigns, heavy, tense, deafening...an assault upon your sense of security, upon the belief that you are traveling safely and no harm will befall you here.

The floor of the forest is so deep, lush moss and leaf litter forming a vast carpet, that none of your footsteps make a single sound. You press down experimentally, and when you lift your paw away, the imprint fills with water. It looks deep, but you're not fooled. You know that when you pass this way again later on, the footprint will be gone, covered by falling flowers and leaves. You could rest here, you think, but know that that would be folly. Stop long enough, and the forest drowns you in greenery. You're glad the forest floor is so deep and lush; you know that not far below are the bones of those who dared tarry too long, and were caught up in the forest's urgent, implacable growth.

With a single blow, the hunt ends, some small creature meeting its death at the end of your paw. Mammal, reptile, amphibian? --It doesn't matter. It stares at you with open eyes; even in death, it accuses you. I'm alive, I'm alive, its heartbeat seems to say before fluttering to a halt. With the hunt over, silence descends again, as taut as a breath waiting to spring free.

You prepare to leave. You must. Alerted by the wrench of a life suddenly ending, the forest begins to tremble, and shapes loom beneath the trees. I'm alive, I'm alive, your own heartbeat reassures you, but not for long, perhaps. For the other creatures that dwell here, the great beasts concealed by the trees, death is not something to avenge. It is an opportunity to feed.
