"Can someone like me...really have another chance?"

The scent of death shrouded her for most of her life, and she knew nothing else. A reaper for Death itself, Reza was commissioned to take souls. Anyone in their right mind would have a problem with being surrounded by so much death and dying, and for a while, she did. She was angry at herself for doing this, angry at the world for being this way, and vicious beyond belief. Her job had turned her cold, savage, and alienated from the rest of the world. For half her life, she traveled the globe in search of the souls she was sent to guide to the afterlife. After so long, she knew that this was the only life for her. She had no qualms, this was her reality. All doubts and worries she hid away and bottled up deep inside herself, becoming numb to the job at hand. One day, that all changed.

She was sent to claim the soul of a Wildclaw like her, named Saa. This one was more difficult than most, and she spent a while tracking her down, until finally she ran across the other dragon. She was in a glen of flowers, stretching her wings in the sun, and surrounded by hatchlings, laughing and telling stories. Reza felt something stir inside her chest, something she had not felt in so long. What was this strange warmth flooding over her? She did not know, the only thing apparent to her was that this reaping would not be carried out. She contemplated moving closer, but how could such a beautiful, kind creature accept her? Surely, she would run. Caught off guard in the middle of these thoughts, her keen senses didn't even realize that a hatchling had snuck up behind her. "BOO!" it chirped, and she spun, her claws reaching forwards to strike -- until Saa propelled herself between Reza and the hatchling. Realizing what she was about to do, Reza stammered an apology, but Saa saw the pain behind her eyes and reached out to touch her shoulder. "It's okay," and in that moment, she knew she would protect this dragon to the ends of the earth.

Together, they fled the minions of Death, who sought Reza out to take her back to do her duties. Saa would not allow that, nor would Reza. Together, they hid themselves, stayed on the move, and stayed together, vowing to protect each other and keep each other safe. Reza found a new meaning to life in this soft, loving creature and their care for each other grew. By the time they reached Maladite, they were in love, and once the bubble went up they knew they could finally be safe with each other, hidden and protected and free to live the life of their choice.
