━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Feathers littered the ground. Apparently, when Talonok were under a certain amount of stress, they began molting uncontrollably. Bald patches appeared on the birds in their cages, and it was clear that even if the Tempest Chase let them go they’d likely not fly again for a long while. The Warden settled down in her usual curled position around her pearl. They were barbarians, anyway. The early morning seeped into late, and Warden made sure her prisoners were fed. Around that time, Kurth, the familiar keeper and bastion of compassion for all creatures, wandered past Warden’s little corner of camp. It was a lovely day, but the cages were exposed to the winds and rain, if there were any. Kurth took one look at the Talonok, then one at the feathers, then one at Warden. “Is this really necessary?” “I’m sure there are others who would be more interested in your philosophical musings,” Warden mumbled, pushing bowls dead beetles under the bars for the Talonok to eat. Most of them moseyed over to investigate, but a good number of them didn’t even look up. “Elincia’s around here somewhere.” Kurth sighed and looked around, probably unaware of just how intimidating he was with his size alone. Then he said, “They’ve been hurt by dragons, you know.” “So have I,” Warden sniffed derisively. “You don’t see me getting together warbands to kill them. And you don’t see me advocating to kill these birds, either.” “It’s different…” Kurth started. “Look.” Warden stood and whipped around to face him. “If you want to say violence is justified to meet violence, then fine. But it’s not my job to ask questions. It’s my job to protect us. That’s all.” |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Even though it was ages ago now, the Pearlcatcher once called Alvi still remembers her father telling her of her mother’s fate. Though she does not remember the reasoning or most of the details, she remembers the message clearly. Her mother stole something from the Icewarden, only the most unforgiving of the gods. He’d caught up with her, as gods always do. Father said she did it for her children, the entire clan, but nothing could change the fact that she wouldn’t be there anymore. Was that not important? Whether fair or not, Alvi grew up hating her mother for her priorities, and the Icewarden for his. As soon as she was old enough, she stepped outside the gates to her old lair, leaving the Plague Runestone key on the ground just inside the lair. She vowed never to return. Whether curiosity or morbid desire to see what became of dragons frozen in the Fortress, Alvi trekked to the furthest and darkest southern lands. Ice clans offered her a place to stay, more than one native thinking her quest crazy. She never arrived at the Fortress, nearly freezing to death before halfway through the Crags a herd of Longnecks captured her. Perhaps it was the Icewarden telling her what it was like in the Fortress, saving her the trip and him the annoyance of an unwanted dragon on his doorstep. Her time behind the rickety Beastclan bars hardened her heart further to her mother’s decision. The Longnecks eventually sold her to a nearby dragon clan. If anything, the dragons were worse. She got used to being treated like a beast or animal until she managed to gain a position of trust, overseeing the other slave beasts and dragons. A final stroke of irony, maybe cruelty, and the dragons began calling her “Warden.” Alvi did, too. After buying her freedom, she found employ as her namesake. She wasn’t miserable, but she wasn’t really happy, either. Warden inherited the intelligence and work ethic of a Lightning dragon, no matter how distasteful her work. However, she is just as influenced by her home Plague and rival Ice as anything. Justice is, to Warden, a dragon-made method of survival of the fittest. Those that do not follow the rules are bound to death. She is held forever by her past, and the pasts of those behind her. Even though she’s managed to find freedom from her bonds, she knows she’ll always be chained. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
As she started her trek across the Frigid Floes, Warden discovered that the Fortress of Ends wasn’t the only place to keep terrible creatures preserved for eternity. Chased by a horde of undead hounds, she didn’t sleep for days until she finally came across a clan friendly enough to let her stay. They’d never heard of any Wraith Hounds in the area, and they didn’t hear anything that night. Warden stayed for a few days before starting again. As though they knew, she heard the spectres howling the next night she laid alone. She hasn’t returned to the Floes in years, but Warden is sure they still follow her. |

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» None of the Tempest Chase know the name Warden’s parents gave her was “Alvi Stormshatter.” Warden does not consider it her true name, however, and prefers “Warden” over all her other names. » » meta Warden does not actually wear chains on her wings, but she feels very much like she does. |
aesthetic: Perhaps as an irony, Warden collects chains, particularly rusty ones. She also likes chain necklaces and bracelets. |
likes: chasing down escaped prisoners, campfires, laying traps dislikes: cold nights, snow, Icewarden _________________________________________________________ |
